SECTORAL MEETING ON HEALTH AND WASH Date: 3th October 2014 Venue: EoC, Old Secretariat, Srinagar Agenda: Follow up on the earlier inputs of various organizations working in Health and Wash sector. To have a detailed discussion on the Health/WASH Strategy document. To discuss the ToR and assessment format for detailed multistakeholder assessment.
Proceedings: The meeting started with a brief introduction of the participants followed by the details of the objectives.
Key Points of Discussion: Need for advocacy with the government for planning long terms resources and deployment of medical staff to address public health issues. Government to plan for resources for establishing health camps (availability of medicine and medical team deployment) in all flood affected areas. The psycho-social issues are emerging as a pivotal need in the entire State. Psycho –social issues can affect the livelihood and education of children. These issues can lead a person to refusal of work and education. To provide psycho-social care, implementation of National Mental health Policy in state can be a area, where advocacy is needed. Child friendly organizations need to focus on the ICDS centers, as they are directly dealing with health and hygiene of the children and community. Little efforts like “Proper Hand Washing” in elementary level schools can be fruitful preventive measures in terms safe health and hygiene. Submission of Surveillance Forms by all agencies conducting medical camps can be an important tool for identifying any disease outbreak. The agencies dealing with animals like Blue Cross, WAP need to intervene in the state. Print and electronic media(Newspapers, Radio) can be used for spreading the preventive measures both for disaster preparedness and mental health issues. Reproductive health and other issues related to women need to be identified. In most cases their issues remain unreported. ASHA and Anganwadi Workers can play vital role in identifying issues and concerns. The distribution of medicines in medical camps should follow the standards of the government. Clearing debris in Srinagar city is an important issue which needs to be addressed at the earliest. There is need for sensitizing and training the paramedical staff, doctors, councilors about the various health related issues like psycho-social care, safe deliveries etc
Shortage of food directly affects the health of people especially of diabetic patients; government should ensure proper supply of food items. Providing safe drinking water is a major concern and many organizations are experimenting with the testing of existing water supplies and water purifying modals. There is need to flourish these experiments on larger level. Key Decisions: CASA, MSF and Oxfam will share the reports of testing the drinking water that they have conducted in different areas. Detailed WASH Assessment form to be circulated to Shelter Group for their inputs. Caritas, DFY, to share their existing Health Assessment Form within the group for their inputs. Various organizations decided to organize medical camps in remote and unattended areas. It was also decided to draft a single strategic document for the WASH and Health sector since both are cross cutting. The next sectoral meeting on Wash and Health will be conducted on 10th October at 3pm.
