and Chase is a leader in creating and deepening the housing crisis. Today, it is pushing more people in New York into foreclosure than the other three large servicers.

What does NYU have to do with this?

4 million

homes in the US have

been foreclosed on.

Chase is NYU’s custodian bank and provides us with other financial services, such as issuing bonds. If our university cuts its ties with Chase it will send a strong message that the bank cannot ignore. Because Chase is an industry leader, its actions will have a ripple effect throughout the country. Halting foreclosures and granting principal reduction to homeowners would keep people in their homes, put money in people’s pockets and stimulate the economy.

Students at Macalester College, Union Theological Seminary and other institutions are demanding that their schools cut ties with banks that are leading the charge to kick people out of their homes. Towns such as Hempstead and Ithaca have already cut ties with Chase. Students are an important part of the movement to put people over profit.

Chase: foreclosing on homes, foreclosing on our future.

Chase: foreclosing on homes, foreclosing on our future.

Homeowners are not the only ones being exploited; big banks are making huge profits off of student debt, sometimes giving schools kickbacks in the process. Consider this: while the elected body of NYU student reps--the student senators council--only has the authority to make recommendations to the NYU President and Board of Trustees, Chase executive Steven Miller sits on our Board of Trustees and has a real say in our budget and tuition. Students and community members need to take power back from big banks!
