Principal News WELCOME BACK, LEOPARDS! I am excited for another fantastic year at Lindon Elementary, and I can't wait to tell you about what we have been working on in preparation for this year. This summer, each of our teachers participated in 4 days of professional development as part of the 21st Century Learning initiative in Alpine School District. Our teachers received training on providing problem based instruction that integrates knowledge and skills from different subjects (i.e. math, language arts, science, history, art, music, dance, etc.) to create deeper learning experiences. It was a phenomenal experience. The engineering and design process are key components in this 21st Century shift, and our students are already engineering solutions to all kinds of school and community problems. I can't wait to see what they do next! Also, this year all ASD elementary schools are shifting to a Standards Based Report Card for all Kindergarten through 6th grade students. We have been using a Standards Based Report Card K-3 for years, but this year 4th, 5th, and 6th grade will use one as well. Instead of upper grade students receiving a percentage/letter grade, they will receive a progress report each trimester of how well they are mastering essential standards in each subject. We are excited about this because it switches the focus from a grade to student learning and mastery. Finally, this year we have come up with 6 school-wide essential questions to tie together classroom learning and school events. The essential question for the first 6 weeks of school is "What is My Role?" Students are learning school and classroom expectations and their very important role as students at Lindon Elementary. Therefore we thought it would be a perfect time to celebrate Safety Month in September to help students know their roles in an emergency. This will include safety in an emergency, internet safety, and saying no to drugs! More information will be coming home about safety month soon. Thanks for your continued support of our school! We’re excited to start the 2017-2018
Parent Nights out with a great topic! Strategies for Teaching Basic Skills at Home
Come learn some simple techniques to help students who need a little extra "one-on-one" to learn basic academic skills at school or at home. We will focus on three interventions: 1) Task analysis - breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable parts to detect where the breakdown is occurring, 2) I do, we do, you do - a modeling method, and 3) discrete trial training - a method for providing multiple repetitions of a skill/concept to enhance learning of more abstract or "memorized" concepts such as ABCs, basic math facts, etc. This class is designed for parents of students in younger elementary grades and preschool, but the concepts can be applied with older students as well.
