New Faculty Seminar

 Held first session of the NFS on Friday, September 26 / 9am to noon / HBC 201 o

Dr. Rhodes, Dr. Cook, and Mike Midgley welcomed new faculty members

o

We created six different activities for our new colleagues on the theme of “Connecting With Your College, Colleagues, and Students”

o

Scheduled and offered campus tours for new faculty at eleven ACC campuses

o

17 new faculty members and 5 faculty facilitators were a part of this session

o

Two more New Faculty Seminars are coming in the future. The dates / times / locations will be:

Meeting #2 - Friday, October 24 / 9am to noon / EVC 8500 – Title: “Helping Your Students Achieve Success”

o

Meeting #3 - Friday, November 21 / 9am to noon / HBC 2018500 – Title: “Learning From Your Experiences at ACC” 

Each session will include breakfast for all participants.

 Preparation has begun on a blackboard section for new faculty members. This section will give faculty members the opportunity to communicate with their colleagues who are new to ACC. It will also be a platform where the FCTL can provide requested materials to new faculty members and offer them support in their first year.  Goal is to welcome faculty in their first two years with ACC to the college, give them resources that will support their success in the classroom, and help them establish ties with their peers.

Student Graffiti Project

 Held three sessions (HLC, RGC, and NRG) to collect student comments for their faculty members. Students responded to two statements: o

“Something I’d like my professors to know about me is:

 Sessions will be held at additional campuses over the next two months  Goal is to give students a voice in a discussion with their faculty members about how we can work together for student success. The comments were used at the first session of the New Faculty Seminar, and will be used at other FCTL events as well.

 Added page with the FCTL Vision, Mission, and Value Statements  Added “Events and Evaluations” section with descriptions and evaluations for all our events  Added results of FCTL Survey #2 – covering how faculty would like to receive development opportunities  Goal is to have an online home for the FCTL that provides information to all faculty at ACC about the center and its progress.

 Scheduled Faculty “Brown Bag” session on October 3 for Dual Credit instructors to continue the discussion that was started at the August 22 workshop  Goal is to give dual-credit faculty training on the topics they requested through the ECHS survey

Research on Teaching and Learning Centers at other colleges

 Continuing to do research for topics / methods of presenting faculty development opportunities  Working with Dr. David Diehl at Houston Community College to learn more about their CTLE (Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence)  In April 2015, we will host a nationally recognized expert on faculty development in a one month residency at ACC to help with the development of the FCTL.  Along with two FDAG members, attended Starlink Face 2 Face Professional Development Workshop http://nutn.org/starlink/  In November, will attend the 2014 POD conference and meet with several faculty development experts who have been working with the FCTL  Goal is to investigate what has been done at centers for teaching and learning at other community colleges and four year universities.

FCTL Development

 Created and posted FCTL Vision, Mission, and Value Statements  We will continue to meet faculty members and learn what their wishes are for the FCTL  Added two new Adjunct Faculty members to the FDAG  Goal is to have a resource for all faculty that encourages collaboration between colleagues and lifelong development as educators.

Departmental Collaborations

 Sociology Incubator – First department meeting activity is scheduled for 10/10/14. The department has provided a faculty liaison and a planning meeting to develop content was held on 9/30/14.  Sociology Incubator – Goal is to learn more about how to provide discipline-specific faculty development opportunities at department meetings by departmental request.  Working with Counseling Department to share FCTL goals with ACC counselors

Faculty Collaborations

 Collecting names and maintaining a list of faculty members who want to help with FCTL initiatives  Accepting suggestions for faculty led workshops; offering support to faculty who wish to develop their own presentations.
