GETTING STARTED:

4. Read Matthew 23:1-3. How does this passage match with a common hypocrisy that some parents pass on to their kids: “Don’t do as I do, do as I _________!” (a common saying)

1. What part of the weekend message was most challenging, encouraging or confusing to you?

To avoid hypocrisy, our life and words need to match up? Why is it important that we walk our talk?

2. What is the difference between a personal preference and a biblical principle? (if in a small group, don’t spend all night on this one!)

DIGGING DEEPER 1. In Luke 11:40-44, Jesus addresses the difference between what is on the inside of our lives and what is on the outside of our lives. (internal vs. external) What comparisons does Jesus make to describe the difference between the inside and outside? What image does Matthew 23: 27-28 add to the contrast of the inside and outside of the Pharisees? What are some examples of ways we try to look good on the outside?    

Example: Making sure that someone SEES me serving

2. One of the questions we were asked to consider this week was “am I known for being more religious or more loving?” How might someone balance out the concept of “tough love” with this statement and what it means to live out the truth of God’s Word? 3. A word that is used to describe someone who says one thing and does another is “hypocrisy”. Read Matthew 7:1-5. What does this passage have to say about hypocrisy?

Why not just decide and do what feels good according to each situation?

TAKING IT HOME 1. What areas of your life do you try to cover up with good deeds? Example: I feel guilty about_____, so I ______. 2. Is there any hypocrisy that you need to repent of? Duh! Of course there is…we all have it. Be brutally honest and think it over.
