2016 Scientific Ballooning Technologies Workshop Title Balloon Data Management for Multi-Terabyte Experiments Author Seth Hillbrand (Penn) Abstract High altitude experiments present unique challenges to data management due to extremes in thermal, vibrational, atmospheric and electromagnetic conditions. BLASTPol-TNG anticipates generating more than 84 terabytes of experimental data over a 30-day flight. To accommodate this volume and rate, we have developed a modular, pressurized data array that can sustain data writes of 30 MB/s while detecting and recovering from common hard drive failures such as bad sectors, faulty controllers and power failures. I will detail the design and testing of both hardware and software involved in this project.
