SHARE CLUSTER AN OVERVIEW
OF PROGRAMS
What is Share Cluster?
The Medina County Share Cluster was founded in 1987 and has sponsored and implemented many programs designed to prevent/and or intervene on violence, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use within the County.
The Medina County Share Cluster meets monthly during each school year to plan specific substance abuse prevention programs and activities. Participation in the cluster is “open,” in that no one is refused entry into planning and programming.
Any agency representative, school personnel, or individual concerned about prevention related issues who attends the cluster for one calendar year and becomes involved in at least one of the programs and/or projects will be seen as a member of Share Cluster.
Who are the Members of Share Cluster?
Substance abuse & at-risk behavior prevention professionals throughout Medina County join together in a collaborative effort with law enforcement agencies & substance abuse/mental healthcare providers to share prevention initiatives & programs.

Special Agent Enrique Camarena of the DEA’s Guadalajara Mexico, President Office, was kidnapped & tortured and killed by Mexican Drug Traffickers on 02/07/85.
Each October, thousands of schools, communities & State and local drug abuse prevention organizations distribute red ribbons to honor Special Agent Camareno’s Memory

Medina County School Crisis Response Team
Every Share Cluster is entitled to attend the 2 day or 1 day School Crisis Response Team Training (11/19/15-11/20/15).
MCSCRT uses the CISM framework and specific intervention techniques that can easily be applied within the school setting during a crisis situation.

EXTREME CHALLENGE
Extreme Challenge was designed by SHARE Cluster members to help students transition to and make meaningful connections with their individual high schools. The activities are designed to build confidence, self-worth and resilience. There are 3 events that take place, Fall, Winter and Spring.

Medina County Career Center Ropes Course.
The Ropes Course involves students engaging in a powerful and integrated “learning by doing” approach.
Each team engaged in activities and initiatives that encouraged critical thinking and risk taking.
Participants learned to solve problems, make decisions, set goals and develop communication skills in an environment that was interactive, challenging, supportive, and fun.

Extreme Challenge Winter Event
Chris Milo, a concert pianist and motivational speaker, uses his power driven therapeutic piano performance and testimony that inspires students. Chris discusses the “13 messages from Milo” and asked that each school plan how they would implement these messages into their school. Each school then presented what they would be doing to bring awareness to Milo’s 13 messages (be positive, love one another, trust, work together, accept, use your talents, be creative, inspire, coach, be curious, listen, communicate and be genuine). Stephen Dixon, will perform a magic show on decision making and the consequences of drug abuse.

engage in a scavenger hunt by answering questions on various animals and their habitats. The winning team gets a trophy that is passed on from year to year
GSAT- Get Smart About Tobacco
GSAT will take place on March 11th at Northside Christian Church.
GSAT is a sixth grade tobacco prevention program. Approximately one-hundred and twenty-eight sixth graders throughout Medina County school district will have an opportunity to go through six learning stations, including positive peer influence, tobacco cancer prevention, lung functioning and tobacco advertising.
Laura Loew will also provide a presentation on the dangers of tobacco.
Ken Groves a ventriloquist will also provide a message that promotes good decision making skills
In addition GSAT students meet with their advisor and plan activities in the school to promote abstinence from tobacco.

SHARE Cluster Workshops
Share Cluster will conduct two workshops related to prevention/intervention.
Last year Dr. Brad Lander, Clinical Director of Addiction Medicine with The Ohio State University discussed the current research on Addiction & the Brain.
Jim Ryan, with Ryan Training & Consultation presented Ethics and Applicability which addressed core components of professional service, understanding and working within a professional code of Ethics.
Share Cluster Workshops Operation Street Smart- Narcotics Officers with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office presented on current and up-to-sate narcotics information on trends, terminology, paraphernalia, concealment techniques and physiological effects of drugs. Dr. Jason Jerry with Medina Hospital/Cleveland Clinic gave a brief history of opiate abuse and how this has led to the heroin epidemic we are now facing. The day concluded with a local panel of experts then tied all the this information to what we are seeing in Medina County. The panel consisted of representatives from Medina County Juvenile & Probate Court, Juvenile Drug Court, Juvenile Detention Center, Medina County Drug Abuse Commission, Solutions Behavior Healthcare, Inc., & Alternative Paths

Highlights the Programs that Share Cluster Provides
Recognizes two HUDDLE Students from each district for their role in Prevention.
Suzanne LeSure from Cornerstone Psychological Services received the Community Prevention Award.
Medina High School received $1000.00 from Alternative Paths for the Suicide Prevention PSA. The top three PSA’s were shown and recognized (Highland High School; Cloverleaf High School and the Medina County Career Center). Black River Huddle Students discussed the importance of prevention to the audience.
