SHaRP has kicked off for another great summer! Our 2017 Team Leaders are already hard at work, and have great things planned for the upcoming season. Two weeks ago, we explored how to incorporate new educational tools and use local watersheds as a teaching space for Surrey teachers.

Here are some photos from last week when we worked with a grade 11 science class from Panorama Ridge Secondary to improve the area surrounding Cougar Creek. We spent the morning removing invasive plant species, introducing native plant species, and taking water quality samples. 05-23-2017 4:00 PM

Cougar Creek Coho Release

After our restoration work, we had the opportunity to assist the @Cougar Creek Streamkeepers release 1,000 Coho smolts! To ensure the smolts made it safely to the creek, and to keep ourselves safe on the steep bank, we used a salmon slide. Our smolts should be on their way to the ocean right now; hopefully we will see them again as spawners next Fall at Cougar Creek!

We are so grateful for SHaRP's fin-tastic funders! Without generous funders, SHaRP would not be able to protect and improve Surrey's stream habitats as our city grows and develops. Thank you to our 2017 funders, @RBC Blue Water Project and @School District 36. 05-24-2017 4:00 PM

Global News story on DFO cuts

Protecting salmon bearing creeks and streams, and educating youth about environmental stewardship is so important to our environment and culture here on the West Coast. Robson Park Festival

Our biggest event of the summer, the Robson Park Festival, is only one day away... We can't wait to see you there tomorrow!

Robson Park Festival

Thank you to everyone who came out to our annual Robson Park Festival today! We were so happy that the Surrey Natural Areas Partnership, Stream of Dreams, and Southside Community Church were able to come out and celebrate with us. The SHaRP team had such a fun time removing invasive plants, doing https://goo.gl/ibZrpJ salmon-y activities, and enjoying yummy BBQ snacks with all of you. What better way to celebrate the beautiful natural areas in Surrey than to enjoy and protect them. We can't wait for next year's festival, it was definitely one of the highlights of our summer!

It's already the third week of August and the SHaRP team is continuing our hard work in Surrey's creeks and streams to protect and enhance salmon habitat!

08-16-2017 10:00 AM Post

One of the most important elements of a healthy salmon habitat is clean oxygenated water. Last week the SHaRP team came together to build six rock weirs along one of the tributaries of the Little Campbell River. The newly constructed rock weirs will Rock Weir Construction ensure that the creek's water is oxygenated, and will provide https://goo.gl/jHu43K at Campbell Heights shelter for both young salmon as they leave their fresh water home, and spawners as they make their long journey back from the ocean.

August is a busy month for SHaRP, as it is the time year when in stream work may be carried out with the lowest risk to fish, wildlife species, and habitat. The SHaRP team is having so much fun working together in Surrey's creeks and streams, as you can see in some of last week's photos below!

Robson Park Invasive Removal Party

Crew Members' Last Day

Thank you to everyone who came out to participate in our last summer Invasive Removal Party today! Removing invasive plant species like Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, and morning glory, helps to maintain the diverse natural habitat in the park’s riparian area. If you missed our summer events, don't worry; our https://goo.gl/3HT9kX Robson Park Stewardship Series will continue into the fall with Planting Parties. You will have to opportunity to work with the SHaRP team to plant native species, such as salmonberry and thimbleberry, which help increase biodiversity and prevent invasive plant species from re-establishing. We can't believe that today is the SHaRP 2017 Crew Members' last day, the summer has gone by so fast! We've had an incredible time with them over the last 2 months and we're sad that our time together has come to an end. The SHaRP team really becomes a family each year and it's so great to work together towards creating a positive environmental impact in Surrey! If you're interested in becoming a part of the SHaRP team, we hire Surrey high school student in Grades 10, 11, or 12 each summer and fall! Keep your eyes on http://www.surrey. ca/community/13877.aspx for details and deadlines.

This summer, SHaRP's Media Team has been working on a video to capture and highlight our success stories and partnerships with community groups, not-for-profit organizations, Surrey residents, and local governments.

Partnership Video

One of SHaRP’s main goals is to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy salmon habitat within our city, but we cannot do so alone. We are so thankful for all of our Partnership Video connections within the community who help us to achieve our restoration goals! Thanks to Surrey's Natural Areas Partnership, A Rocha Canada, MLA Marvin Hunt, MLA Bruce Ralston, and of course the City of Surrey and its residents for participating in this video with us.

Last Day of Summer SHaRP

The 2017 Team Leaders would like to extend big "thank-yous" to all of the wonderful people that we had the opportunity to work with. As we sit together in the SHaRP Office writing our final SHaRP Team Photo report together, we can't help but reminisce on all of the memories from this summer! SHaRP is far from over though! Our team will continue with restoration projects throughout the fall so check our page to keep up with our, as always, fin-tastic events and initiatives. Farewell from the 2017 Summer SHaRP Team, it was a pleasure posting for you!
