Dear Friends,

Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love. Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee. Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it thine: it shall be no longer mine. Take my heart: it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store. Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

Frances R. Havergal (1836-79)

During Lent we will sing this hymn each Sunday morning, not because we have run out of other hymns to sing, but because the season of Lent and the words of this hymn offer us a natural opportunity to commit ourselves afresh to God. ‘Take my life’ was written by Frances Ridley Havergal, the daughter of a Church of England clergyman who, in response to seeing her prayers answered by God, rushed home to compose this hymn as a sign of her continued commitment to serving him. It reaches a climax with the words, ‘Ever, only, all for thee!’ I wonder if you ever think, ‘What can I give to God? What is so special about me?’ This hymn reminds us that we have so much to offer, indeed everything about us God can use. Interestingly one of the verses (v4) of this hymn is often asterisked* as optional but in fact it is these things that God wants to use as well! Why not take time this Lent to offer yourself afresh to God? Thank him for who you are, and ask him how you might keep on serving him or find new ways to serve him. Thank him for what you have and consider how you might serve him, and others, with what you possess. Yours, Angela 3

Thank You To everyone who helped in anyway to the success of the Jumble Sale which raised £500 for church funds. A special ‘Thank you’ to Marion Thornton, Anne-Marie Jesson and David Walker for all the hard word they put in to co-ordinating the whole event. 4

NATLAND GARDENS OPEN DAY This year there is to be a gardens open day in the village which is to take place on Sunday 13th July. It will be two years since such an event was held. The day is going to be organised again jointly by the church and the village hall committee. Volunteers are needed to open their gardens, however large or small, to the public. Many of the garden owners who opened their gardens last time have offered to do so again and we thank them for this. If you would be willing to open your garden this time or know someone who might agree then please let us know. Not all back gardens are appropriate to be opened in this way so we would welcome those with attractive front gardens who would be happy to have folk admire their handy work to also offer their gardens. The village hall committee will be organising the sale of refreshments for the benefit of hall funds and all other money raised will go to the church. In 2012 the event raised over £1,000 for church funds despite the afternoon being (like the rest of the summer) damp and cool. If you are willing to offer your garden or want any more information please contact or speak with Collin Mansfield at [email protected] or 07740 447858 or to any of the organising committee, Audrey Ireland, Rhian Peters, David Walker or Jennifer Ball.

Reading Matthew’s Gospel Come along to St Mark’s Church Vestry, Natland as we read the latter half of St Matthew’s gospel together on Sunday 16th March from 2.30-4pm. These readings may help us focus our thoughts in the season of Lent. No one is obliged to read out loud—but there is the opportunity if you wish to do so.

The next meeting of the Monday Club will be on March 17th at 2.00pm in the Village Hall when the speaker will be Jean Scott-Smith, the subject being "Over Shap - by track, road and rail". 5

Lent begins …….. Please come and join the communities of Old Hutton, New Hutton, Crosscrake & Natland for a service of ‘Holy Communion & Imposition of Ashes’ on Ash Wednesday.

‘Compline’ in Lent Life can be rather busy and sometimes we need opportunities simply to stop, to sit, to pray. The ancient office of ‘Compline’ derives its name from a Latin word meaning 'completion' (completorium). It is above all a service of quietness and reflection before rest at the end of the day. During Lent ‘Compline’ will take place each Friday in church from 6.00pm – 6.30pm, and will include a short seasonal reflection. All are invited to attend. Dates: Fridays 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th March, 4th & 11th April

Lent Lunches As usual we will be holding Lent Lunches around the parish. The lunches will begin at 12 noon and all are encouraged to come along. This year monies raised from donations towards the soup lunches will be shared between the Alzheimer’s Society and WATSAN. There will be five Lent Lunches in all and details of dates and venues will be in church, on the weekly notice sheet and Natland blog (or telephone The Vicarage 015395 60355).

This year’s first Lent Lunch will be at The Vicarage on Wednesday 12th March at 12 noon. All are welcome – just turn up. 6

Help control unwanted marketing calls and texts In November 2012, the Information Commissioners’ Office (ICO) fined the company Tetrus Telecoms £300,000 for sending huge numbers of unsolicited text messages (mainly about PPI mis-selling and compensation for accidents). This was overturned on appeal, the Judge decided that the company's actions did not cause, and were not likely to cause, substantial damage or distress to those affected. The ICO disagrees and wants Government to change the law so that companies can be fined where the texts and phone calls cause nuisance, annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety. If you have been affected let us know. We can pass your story onto the ICO and together we can try to get the law changed. We call this action ‘Social Policy’. Every CAB around the country uses local experience of your problems to build a national picture. We have people employed in London who then take this information and lobby Government to try and get changes for the better. So as you can see, each person’s story can build to something powerful, helping prevent similar problems in future. Free, confidential advice and help is available from Cumbria Rural Citizens Advice Bureau on any aspect of debt, benefits, housing, consumer problems, employment and any other problems. We have various outlets across South Lakeland and can also give advice over the phone - telephone 015394 46464 for an appointment and help. If you don't need us for advice, how about helping us by becoming a volunteer or making a donation? Not many people realize that we are a local charity - see our website for details www.cumbriaruralcab.org.uk.

We are pleased to announce that Sam Keech from St Mark’s CE School and Families@4 counted almost all of the stars. Well done Sam—a prize is on its way to you. There were 253 stars and Sam found 251 of them. Thank you also to David and Hilda Walker who put up, and took down, the stars!!

Families Group will meet in the Church vestry on Wednesday, 5th March when Rev’d Graham Skilling will tell us about ‘My Journey’. As it will be Ash Wednesday, there will be a service in Church at 7pm and our meeting will begin at 7.45pm. You are welcome to come to both or join us after the service at 7.45pm.

Adrian Walkley Towards the end of last year, I asked if my brother could be included in our prayers in church on Sunday mornings and I published an article in the Parish News outlining his medical condition. To recap, Adrian fell in the kitchen of his home in France last Summer and severely damaged his spine. After invasive surgery in two operations he was told by one of his doctors that he would probably never walk again. I'm pleased to say that the situation has now changed: Adrian has responded to hospital treatment to such an extent that he was allowed home for a few days at Christmas; he can sit up in a wheel chair and is responding to physiotherapy to the extent that the specialist team of medics working on him think that he will recover enough strength in his back and movement in his legs to enable him to walk again. This is, of course, wonderful news for all the family and I would like to thank everyone who has asked me about Adrian and included him in their personal prayers. As I mentioned in my previous article, Adrian and his wife Hilary are not church goers and as far as I know have no contact with a Christian community in France. We shall never know far the prayers from St Mark's has aided his recovery but I think we should all rejoice that it is taking place. Thank you once again for your concern and prayerful support. The road to recovery is a long one but now there is some hope. Clive Walkley 11

Who Do You Think You Are? Many will have enjoyed the programme, “Who Do You Think You Are,” where celebrities have traced their ancestors and many have found surprises in their family history. Some discovered the roles of their grandfathers and/or great grandfathers in the First World War with some making the journey to visit graves in “Flanders Field” and indeed beyond. Have you an ancestor who was involved in the Great War? What do you know about them? Have you any photographs or memorabilia of that time? Are you willing to share these memories? At the beginning of this August we are planning to mount a display in Church commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. We would be very grateful if you could contribute any information and/or pictures to help and support this project. Thank you. Please contact John Chandler (015395 60169 or [email protected]) if you can help in anyway.

Drawing, painting, poetry, collage, model making, drama, dance, music and more ………… Come and join us on Sunday 23rd March, 30th March and 6th April in St Mark’s Church Vestry from 6.15—7.45pm if you would like to get involved with making some ‘Stations of the Cross.’ Our ‘stations’ will all come together on Palm Sunday (13th April) when they will be used in a special Helm Group Service at St Mark’s Church at 6.30pm. 14

The Bible according to KIDS. The statements below are said to have been written by actual students and are genuine, authentic and not retouched or corrected: In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, God got tired of creating the world, so he took the Sabbath off. Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. Noah's wife was called Joan of Ark. Noah built an ark, which the animals came on to in pears. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles. Moses led the Hebrews to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread, which is bread without any ingredients. Moses died before he ever reached Canada. David was a Hebrew king skilled at playing the liar. He fought with the Finklesteins, a race of people who lived in Biblical times. The epistles were the wives of the apostles.

The Church Spring Clean From the afternoon of Sunday 6th April to Tuesday 8th April church will be ‘spring-cleaned.’ If you are able to help on any of these days (Sunday afternoon, Monday morning or Tuesday morning) it would be much appreciated. There will be plenty of jobs and brushes, dusters, vacuum cleaners etc will be provided – though please feel free to bring your own. For further information please contact Kay or David Tiffin—or simply turn up. Thank you.

Would you like to help represent our parish? The parish councillors were thrilled so see so many people turn up at the Village Hall for the launch of the Parish Plan on 1 February, despite the awful weather and the rugby on the television! And also to receive from the Parish Plan Steering Group the lists of people who have already volunteered to take part in various working groups to help push forward some of the actions in the new Plan. (If you are already on those lists, don’t worry - we do have your names. We haven’t had a chance to get the groups started yet but we hope to be in touch soon.) If you did not sign up for a particular working group but have a general interest in the future of our parish and would like to help to steer the whole of Parish Plan through over the next few years, why not consider standing as a parish councillor? We are expecting to have parish council elections on Thursday 22 May this year. We currently have one vacancy, due to the resignation in January of Andrew Gill after his recent illness, and it would be great to have some new faces on board. There’s lots of good, free-to-you training available if you’re interested (on topics like Local Government Finance and Local Planning) and no special expertise required – just a desire to look after Natland and the interests of residents. If this feels to be happening rather hot on the heels of the last NPC elections (in 2012), that’s because we are trying to bring our elections into line with the SLDC elections, to save costs all round. But this also seems a great time for a change of guard with the new Parish Plan to implement so please give it some thought. Nominations need to be in by Friday 25 April. To find out more about what the role entails, check the Cumbria Association of Local Councillors’ website – www.calc.org.uk, ask one of the existing parish councillors (David Peters, Rhian Peters, Di Outhwaite, Guy Weller, Sarah Roberts or Lois Sparling) or email our parish clerk, Kevin Price, at [email protected].

NATLAND SPRING LITTER HUNT SATURDAY 5 April 2014 Volunteers are needed at the Village Hall from 9.45 to 10.15am (to reduce queuing) or from 2pm (morning and afternoon sessions). We will provide (or you can bring your own) sacks, gloves, picking tools and high-visibility waistcoats, and suggest where you might pick. Thanks to well-behaved residents and public-spirited volunteers, Natland is a fairly tidy village. But litter along the outlying lanes can be an eyesore. Last year’s successful litter hunt left the Parish looking noticeably better, but now it needs doing again. Why not come and help for an hour or two? Having heard about Clive and Gill Walkley’s trip to London, and Clive’s award, Angela asked Clive to write an article for us. Thank you Clive.

Music for small choirs Composing music is something I enjoy doing and regular worshippers at St Mark's may be aware that from time to time the choir sing post-Communion anthems which I have written. I try to write music that will enhance our worship, providing a moment or two for reflection for clergy and individual members of the congregation before we all launch into our final hymn. Finding suitable texts and writing in a style which is not beyond the ability of our small choir is not easy but is immensely rewarding. Recently, while browsing on the internet, I came across the Small Choirs website. This organisation was set up ten years ago by a member of a small church choir who felt frustrated by the fact that so much choral music was beyond the reach of a small group of singers. It is a sad fact that church choirs all over the country are in decline: numbers are dropping and older singers, whose voices may be past their best, are not being replaced by younger singers (not the case in St Mark's I'm pleased to say!) So there is now an on-line group of Small Choirs, and once a year a Festival is held enabling members of small church choirs from any denomination to come together in a central London church to make music for an afternoon. A recent innovation is a composing competition when any composer can submit his or her music according to the criteria that it must not be too technically demanding for a small group of singers, some of whose members may not be able to read music. I entered four of my short anthems in the 2013 competition and much to my surprise, one of them (God in mine Eternity) won second prize and was sung along with other winning pieces at this year's Festival which Gill and I attended on Saturday 8th February. This organisation of small choirs provides a wonderful resource for church choirs like our own: there are hundreds of tailor-made choral arrangements and original compositions available free of charge to anyone who has access to a computer. All composers give their permission for their music to be photocopied and no royalties are paid. I feel privileged to have been able to contribute to this service: to know that my music may go out into the wider church community and help others to use their God-given talents in their churches. I also feel privileged to be part of such a willing and faithful group of singers who, week by week here at St Mark's, assemble every Sunday morning early to prepare music for our worship; I would like to thank them and Gill, our wonderful leader, for all their patience and commitment.

PRAYER PAGE Prayers Great Creator God, who gave life to the world and everyone in it, create in me a heart of careful consumerism. As I stand in a shop, and as I prepare my meals, help me to remember that what I buy and eat comes from farmers, growers, workers and labourers in fields and factories across the world. Help me to remember that someone’s life and wellbeing depends on the products I hold in my hands, place into my shopping basket, and eat from my plate, that I may be thankful and act with justice. Amen. From the Mothers Union A Song of St Anselm (1033-1109) Jesus, as a mother you gather your people to you; you are gentle with us as a mother with her children. In your love and tenderness, remake us. Often you weep over our sins and our pride, tenderly you draw us from hatred and judgment. In your love and tenderness, remake us. You comfort us in sorrow and bind up our wounds, in sickness you nurse us, and with pure milk you feed us. In your love and tenderness, remake us. Jesus, by your dying we are born to new life; by your anguish and labour we come forth in joy. In your love and tenderness, remake us. Despair turns to hope through your sweet goodness; through your gentleness we find comfort in fear. In your love and tenderness, remake us. Your warmth gives life to the dead, your touch makes sinners righteous. In your love and tenderness, remake us. In your compassion bring grace and forgiveness, for the beauty of heaven may your love prepare us. In your love and tenderness, remake us. 23

Almighty God, by the prayer and discipline of Lent may we enter into the mystery of Christ’s sufferings, and by following in his Way come to share in his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. From the Church of England: Common Worship
