Allison Post Time: past, present and future Place: mythical USA, primarily New Jersey and Atlantic City The Skin of Our Teeth made its Broadway premier in late November, 1942. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has been revived in countless productions around the country, and the world, ever since. Hurricane Sandy, a presidential election, our continuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – all underscored by the ringing of the 2012 alarm bell. It’s been an eventful year for the U.S. How strange, then, to encounter the American fable The Skin of Our Teeth which tells the story of the end of the world three times over: through climate change, a presidential election in the midst of a devastating storm, and war. Although the play made its debut seventy years ago, it seems Wilder had an astoundingly accurate crystal ball. His prescient, fantastical vision offers a series of arguments about humankind’s propensity for destruction coupled with our uncanny ability to survive. The words of Wilder’s Fortune Teller, “They’re not worth saving, let them drown” stand in stark contrast to Mrs. Antrobus’ sentiment, “This world has a work to do and will do it.” As theater artists, one might say our primary work is to explore the human condition and offer visions for, just possibly, effecting its improvement. And Wilder’s play serves up a simple recipe along these lines: pay deep attention to our families (how ever they are defined), choose our leaders wisely, and strive “for a better life…not just a more comfortable one.” The cast and crew sends its support to the victims and survivors of Hurricane Sandy. Actors may be greeted on the North Patio.  Food and drink are not allowed in the theater.  Occidental College policy prohibits smoking in any building or within thirty feet of any college facility. Ashtrays are located outside on the front plaza.
