Playing The Beast

Immediately after you have sex with someone, you become your Darkest Self and lash out physically at your partner. You may then choose to keep lashing out or run away.

The Beast is all about repression. You’re that kid who bottles up her passions, who’s terrified of intimacy, and whose emotions are so locked away that when you do finally let them out, they explode with a horrible, uncontrollable intensity. In this case, you’ve got a good reason, because your passions turn you into a killer animal.

Darkest Self You are an animal. No trace of your human body or mind remains, only your most primal emotions - lust, fear, anger, jealousy, hatred. You are drawn to anyone you have such intense feelings for, but your only means of interacting with them is to savagely attack them. If you can’t find someone you know, any target will do. You cannot escape your Darkest Self until you take a life.

It just turns twisted and malicious when you are your Darkest Self or are Feral with no impulse control, you’ll go out of your way to hunt and attack that teacher who humiliated you, that boy you have a crush on, or that girl who flirted with the boy you have a crush on. Helping the people you care about especially by giving them wise guidance - should be one of your main priorities. Your story is the story of how you made other people’s stories better. Your meddling may create some drama, but that’s okay especially if it’s funny.

It really isn’t as bad as you might think. You don’t have to watch your weight, for instance. You can wear what you want and never get hot or cold. You never have to pee. Sometimes you miss getting the ofrendas, but it’s cool to help people out, push them along the right paths, without asking for anything in return. Better to keep the truth secret, though. Your friends can handle you as an oddly perky goth. You’re not sure a walking, talking skeleton would be quite as popular.

If something bad happens to your skin, you’ll need to replace it before you can pass for human again (unless you have the Sugar Skull move). The method for obtaining a new skin is up to you, but keep in mind that your human form will look like whoever supplied your replacement skin. If you take the Ossuary move as an advancement, you’ll need to explain where the extra bones came from and where you keep them. Once you actually use the move, the replacement bones will change your nature somewhat. In addition to picking a new move, you may want to display new or altered facets of your personality. You can use this ability to be present and active in multiple simultaneous scenes. m Morte Alata In your true form, you have a pair of bony wings. When not in use they fold up and look something like an extra ribcage on your back, but you can use them for flight despite their skeletal nature. Roll Dark instead of Volatile to run away by escaping into the air. m Ossuary You have a small cache of “extra” bones. When you take your fourth harm, you can hold yourself together just long enough to get to your stash and rebuild yourself with your spares. Playing The Creature

After you have sex with someone, treat protecting them as part of your cause until you have sex with someone else. Additionally, if you have sex with someone underwater, they can breathe water until you have sex with someone else.

Pick a cause that makes sense given the setting of your game. Preventing a company from dumping toxic waste into a body of water or turning a forest preserve into a landfill, rescuing animals from a laboratory or oceanarium, or protecting an endangered species from poachers could all work. You don’t have to spend every waking moment working toward your cause, but if the opportunity comes up you should prioritize it.

Darkest Self Everything sucks and you’ll never change it, so just stop trying. Grab the person you care about the most and retreat to a safe place - your territory if you have one. Defend your little nest against all intruders and ignore everything else - it’s not like you were making a difference anyway. You can only return from your Darkest Self when someone shows you that you’ve changed things for the better.

Territorial is a move that might not be available depending on your setting as well. If the game is set in an arid environment, the best available option might be a water park or old abandoned swimming pool. Frog Song, Hot and Wet, and Came Up Tails are geared toward a more social and persuasive type of play. Cold Fury and Squamous are more physical and combative. You can decide what kind of activism appeals to you more. In general you’ll probably want to choose either Came Up Tails or Squamous but not both, for reasons of theme - but taking both would certainly give you an interesting and flexible monstrous form. You’ll want to avoid using the tail on land, but anyone seeing you with both Moves active will experience the effects of both (they mark experience, you take a string on them, and they must hold steady). If you go Darkest Self and you don’t have a territory, pick someplace that would make a good territory if you DID have one. If you don’t have Frog Kiss or you can’t or won’t have underwater sex with the person you’ve brought with you, be sure that your refuge has some air for them to breathe. Do whatever you have to do to keep them from escaping - your Darkest Self is lonely and needs their support.

All that time and energy on the petition - all the convincing, all the seducing, all the threatening - and what do the fuckers do when you present them with a thousand signatures? They tear the papers in half and laugh in your face. Just a kid, they said. You can’t make a difference here, they said. Stay out of things that don’t concern you, they said. Well, dumping waste into the river does concern you. And maybe a pissed-off river monster will concern them.

After you have sex with someone, treat protecting them as part of your cause until you have sex with someone else. Additionally, if you have sex with someone underwater, they can breathe water until you have sex with someone else.

Pick a cause that makes sense given the setting of your game. Preventing a company from dumping toxic waste into a body of water or turning a forest preserve into a landfill, rescuing animals from a laboratory or oceanarium, or protecting an endangered species from poachers could all work. You don’t have to spend every waking moment working toward your cause, but if the opportunity comes up you should prioritize it.

Darkest Self Everything sucks and you’ll never change it, so just stop trying. Grab the person you care about the most and retreat to a safe place - your territory if you have one. Defend your little nest against all intruders and ignore everything else - it’s not like you were making a difference anyway. You can only return from your Darkest Self when someone shows you that you’ve changed things for the better.

Territorial is a move that might not be available depending on your setting as well. If the game is set in an arid environment, the best available option might be a water park or old abandoned swimming pool. Frog Song, Hot and Wet, and Came Up Tails are geared toward a more social and persuasive type of play. Cold Fury and Squamous are more physical and combative. You can decide what kind of activism appeals to you more. In general you’ll probably want to choose either Came Up Tails or Squamous but not both, for reasons of theme - but taking both would certainly give you an interesting and flexible monstrous form. You’ll want to avoid using the tail on land, but anyone seeing you with both Moves active will experience the effects of both (they mark experience, you take a string on them, and they must hold steady). If you go Darkest Self and you don’t have a territory, pick someplace that would make a good territory if you DID have one. If you don’t have Frog Kiss or you can’t or won’t have underwater sex with the person you’ve brought with you, be sure that your refuge has some air for them to breathe. Do whatever you have to do to keep them from escaping - your Darkest Self is lonely and needs their support.

All that time and energy on the petition - all the convincing, all the seducing, all the threatening - and what do the fuckers do when you present them with a thousand signatures? When you have sex with someone, protecting them counts as protecting your school for the purposes of School Spirit, and you cannot lash out physically at them for any reason. This lasts until you have sex with someone else or they do something to cause physical harm to your school. You can’t have sex when you are dormant or animate.

First and foremost: the school mentioned in various Moves doesn’t actually have to be a school at all. It could be a church, a summer camp, a community center, a nightclub, an apartment building, or any other establishment that’s located in a specific place and has regular hours of operation and a “community” of employees, patrons, customers, members, or inhabitants. Work together with your MC to figure out what setting will work best for your particular game.

Darkest Self Nobody else loves this school like you do. They just don’t understand how important it is. You’d be nothing without it, and you’re the only one that can protect it. The basketball team that beat yours in the playoffs, the school board members who want to cut funding, the teacher who molests her students - they’re all enemies, and they all have to be punished. Severely. You can recover from your Darkest Self only when someone shows you how your actions are hurting your school.

Similarly, not all Gargoyles are stone statues in their dormant or animate forms. You could be a sculpture of metal or wood or plaster, a painting or mural, an old mascot costume or band uniform, a stained glass window, or even a digital character on a computer or HDTV screen. Anything works as long as it’s at least vaguely an anthropomorphic form, and it should be something that won’t be easily missed when you are walking around looking like a human. As a Gargoyle you’re tied to your school (or whatever), so protecting and helping it should always be your first priority. If that causes conflicts with your friends and loved ones, great - hard choices will lead to drama. Taking Kirkgrim can make this easier, as can your Sex Move. Babewyn and Grotesque can make you more flexible. Hatchery also adds flexibility in a way, since you can use it to change what your dormant or animate forms look like.

When you have sex with someone, protecting them counts as protecting your school for the purposes of School Spirit, and you cannot lash out physically at them for any reason. This lasts until you have sex with someone else or they do something to cause physical harm to your school. You can’t have sex when you are dormant or animate.

First and foremost: the school mentioned in various Moves doesn’t actually have to be a school at all. It could be a church, a summer camp, a community center, a nightclub, an apartment building, or any other establishment that’s located in a specific place and has regular hours of operation and a “community” of employees, patrons, customers, members, or inhabitants. Work together with your MC to figure out what setting will work best for your particular game.

Darkest Self Nobody else loves this school like you do. They just don’t understand how important it is. You’d be nothing without it, and you’re the only one that can protect it. The basketball team that beat yours in the playoffs, the school board members who want to cut funding, the teacher who molests her students - they’re all enemies, and they all have to be punished. Severely. You can recover from your Darkest Self only when someone shows you how your actions are hurting your school.

Similarly, not all Gargoyles are stone statues in their dormant or animate forms. You could be a sculpture of metal or wood or plaster, a painting or mural, an old mascot costume or band uniform, a stained glass window, or even a digital character on a computer or HDTV screen. Anything works as long as it’s at least vaguely an anthropomorphic form, and it should be something that won’t be easily missed when you are walking around looking like a human. As a Gargoyle you’re tied to your school (or whatever), so protecting and helping it should always be your first priority. If that causes conflicts with your friends and loved ones, great - hard choices will lead to drama. Taking Kirkgrim can make this easier, as can your Sex Move. Babewyn and Grotesque can make you more flexible. Hatchery also adds flexibility in a way, since you can use it to change what your dormant or animate forms look like.

You should be handing out In the Maze as often as possible, via shutting someone down, the Seeing Red move, or spending strings. If you have Tribute, be sure to remind people that they can eliminate your strings on them by throwing someone else under the bus. Hot is one of your high stats, but your “dumb, violent thug” reputation will probably get in the way of serious romance. If your game is set in an environment other than a school, pick the most central and frequently used location to place the Catacombs (which could be a deserted bomb shelter, a natural cave network, or even actual catacombs). Most of your moves are focused around your protegé, as you might expect, but even those that aren’t can be used to clear a path for them. Judas Hole and O.G. are great for blackmailing potential obstacles, and Punjab Lasso offers a more violent and perhaps permanent solution to your protegé’s rivals. The Secret Minions gang advancement can represent sympathetic friends or family members who know your dual identity, blackmailed victims who have no choice but to obey you, or broken, enthralled former students desperate for another chance to become your protegé again.

For the MC Under the Beast’s Skin

Under the Calaca’s Skin

The Beast is constantly struggling to repress her passions. In order to make that fun and dramatic, you’re going to have to put her in situations where she’s really tempted to give in. Don’t just constantly throw in NPCs who spam turn someone on at her; it will be much more rewarding to give her genuine reasons to like and be attracted to someone. Get her invested enough in another character and turn someone on might not even be necessary!

The Calaca is often focused on being a good friend or mentor, so an easy way to engage her is to threaten the people she cares about (whether fellow PCs or NPCs). Give her the chance to advise, direct, or intervene in her friends’ lives, then push back by bringing up unexpected consequences. You can also engage her more directly by playing up the way other people react to this cheerfully death-obsessed kid.

If the player chooses the Green-Eyed Monster or Scaredy Cat moves, she’s signaling to you that she wants to go Feral more often. Be sure to give her plenty of opportunities to get jealous, angry, terrified, or depressed by bringing in rivals or bullies to push her buttons and trigger her moves.

There are no specific rules for how a Calaca’s skin and flesh might be damaged or destroyed (or lost or stolen), so just use your best judgment and do what makes the most sense. The permanent loss of a skin is a very hard move, so use it wisely. If she wants to replace her skin, she’ll need to acquire and basically fillet a human body. You can make this especially horrific or keep it off-screen; keep in mind the comfort levels of your playgroup while deciding on the specifics. The same advice goes for a Calaca who decides to acquire some extra bones and take the Ossuary move as an advancement.

Be careful with the Bloodline of Beasts gang, as the subject matter may be triggery for some players. If you think it might be an issue, work with the player to define her gang as random people who also suffer from her curse, rather than actual relatives; alternately, just remove the “having sex with another Beast doesn’t trigger your Sex Move” clause to avoid the subject entirely. Monsterhearts isn’t a game that pays a lot of attention to things like movement, so if the Beast turns into an owl and wants to fly, or turns into an alligator and wants to swim, or turns into a cheetah and wants to run really fast, just let them do whatever sounds cool to everyone and makes sense in context. Remember that they don’t get any special bonus to actual moves (like run away) for being in an animal form, unless they have a Beast move that says otherwise.

If the player chooses the Connected move and wants to be in multiple scenes at once, make sure she tells you her plans in advance. This isn’t an “I was retroactively there all along” move. She should also let you know exactly which body parts are where, so you can MC the scene accordingly. Calacas with the Morte Alata move can fly. Again, use your best judgment as to what this means and how the player can take advantage of it. Special movement shouldn’t be an “I win” button!

For the MC Under the Creature’s Skin

Under the Fury’s Skin

The Creature won’t have much fun if you don’t give him something to protest and fight against, so be sure to give his cause an enemy or two, and make sure they won’t be easy to overcome quickly (or at all). Big business, the educational establishment, law enforcement, government, and parents/adults all make great examples of “The Man” trying to keep the Creature’s progressive ideas from coming to fruition. When he gets mad and goes for direct solutions (usually involving violence), feel free to show him that’s he’s only made things worse for his cause.

You’re going to want to play along with the Fury’s cycle of acceptance and rejection, but be judicious about it. When it’s time for her to catch a bit of a break or have some downtime, and if another player hasn’t already jumped in, have an NPC befriend her or at least be nice to her so she can pick up the Hopeful condition. Let her run with it for a while and build up momentum - maybe this time things will be different! Then when there’s room in the narrative for a big dramatic moment and the player is ready for some spotlight time, bring the whole thing crashing down with a cruel rejection or revelation of treachery. And now that she’s Betrayed, give her the time she needs to use her amped-up psychic powers and cause a little mayhem - or if she’s her Darkest Self, a LOT of mayhem. When it feels right, start the cycle again.

If word gets out that a merman, gill-man, or lake monster is in the area, cryptozoologists will come out of the woodwork to prove or disprove his existence. These make great intruders to throw at a Creature who has the Territorial move, and may even manage to capture him temporarily. Be sure to give him opportunities to escape if you go this route. When the Creature has the Fanatic condition, be sure to use it against him ruthlessly and remind the other players that they can use it as well. Being ridiculed and treated as a joke or a lunatic will give the Creature plenty of motivation to resort to questionable means in order to bring about his noble ends. As much as possible, frame scenes so as to give the Creature leeway to use his abilities. A scene at the high school might seem to leave him high and dry (so to speak) but, for example, if you throw in a sequence in the shower room so that he can use Hot and Wet to seduce a fellow swim team member, he’ll love you for it.

The Fury puts lots of conditions on herself and on others. Be sure to take advantage of conditions like Hopeful, Betrayed, and Creepy, and remember to play out your NPCs appropriately if they are Enthralled, Burned, have a Headache, or what have you. Let her play to her strengths. If her powers are mostly outward-facing (like telekinesis), set up scenes that are about physical confrontations. If she chose more inward-facing powers (like telepathy), choose scenes about social manipulation or hidden secrets. Once in a while, switch things up and put her in a tough spot where her psychic abilities won’t help her out and let her squirm.

For the MC Under the Gargoyle’s Skin A player who chooses to play the Gargoyle is expressing a strong preference for what kind of game they want to be part of - one in which the high school (or whatever other social center binds the characters together) has a major presence in the story. The Gargoyle’s entire existence and all his moves are focused around the school and its well-being, so keep that in mind when brainstorming Threats and Menaces. By default, a Gargoyle is inactive for twelve hours of every day. This can make it complicated to frame scenes in such a way that everyone gets roughly equivalent spotlight time! You’ll have to get creative to come up with replacements for typical teen scenes like sleepovers, keggers, and other nocturnal mischief. This becomes less of a problem if the Gargoyle takes the Babewyn move, so if you foresee difficulty in working him into your scenes, strongly suggest that he takes that move so he can be active when the other characters are. Certain other moves will suggest ideas for supporting cast members and/or plotlines. A Gargoyle who takes Kirkgrim is basically asking for a large, interesting student body and faculty who find themselves in peril frequently. Rival Schools should immediately inspire you to flesh out some other institutions, their populations, and the history and nature of their rivalries. Hatchery is another move that suggests some storylines. A Gargoyle’s egg can’t be destroyed, but what happens if it gets stolen? An egg held hostage could be a powerful tool to blackmail him into working for someone - as long as he’s not acting against the best interests of the school.

Under the Mummy’s Skin

The Minotaur sees himself as a simple tool, and you should play along. If the other players aren’t spending enough time manipulating him into acting against their enemies, you should step in and have some NPCs take advantage of him. Use up any strings on him to offer him experience for doing your bidding, especially if he has Red Flag. Similarly, you should be having your NPCs throw each other and the players into the Minotaur’s maze (via the In the Maze condition) as often as possible, especially if he has the Tribute move.

The most important thing to remember when you have a Mummy in your game is that she has to learn some humility - and you’re the one who has to teach her. As much as she might wish otherwise, the world has changed and in many ways left her behind, and if she doesn’t change to match, she’s going to find herself lost and alone. Present her with as many object lessons to that effect as she can handle.

The Minotaur has a high Hot score but low selfesteem; you can reinforce this with the one-two punch of someone (especially someone he actually has feelings for) taking him out for a casual roll in the hay and then insisting that it be kept secret from everyone - or worse, pretending that it never happened at all. The big dumb hunk is fine to sleep with, but he’s certainly not relationship material, after all. If nothing else, it’s a good way to get the Golden Thread condition spread around. As important as it is to introduce NPCs to use and abuse the Minotaur, it’s also vital to have a collection of weakling NPCs for him to victimize. He can’t maintain his bully cred if he’s not frequently making other people miserable. For some added drama, maybe one of his most pickedon targets secretly has a serious crush on him - the one person who could genuinely show him love and affection is one of the people he torments because he doesn’t believe he’s worthy of love and affection. Such a character could even represent a happy ending for the Minotaur as he picks up Growing Up moves late in the story.

One of your primary tools will be Cursed Idols, if she has it. When she uses the idols unselfishly, to help or protect others without any ulterior motives, pick a curse that will only affect her mildly, if at all. On the other hand, if she uses the idols for her own benefit, to hurt others, or to get someone to do what she wants, feel free to screw her over royally by picking the worst possible curse - you want everyone at the table to say “holy shit, you are in trouble now” when they find out the effects of the curse. If you’re running a one-shot game, try to steer the Mummy away from taking the Tana Leaves move, as it can be difficult to replenish the leaves in a short timeframe. Soul Eater and Sun-Blessed are much better choices for one-shots. If the Mummy has a soulmate, try to throw as many roadblocks between them as possible. If the soulmate is an NPC, remember that the Mummy’s feelings of love don’t have to be reciprocated! Also be sure that the soulmate leverages the relationship against the Mummy as much as the Mummy leverages it against him - it works both ways, and anything that helps to humble the Mummy is a good thing.

For the MC Under the Muse’s Skin

Under the Proxy’s Skin You don’t have to be a Slender Man expert to help the Proxy’s player have fun, but it doesn’t hurt. Take a little time to browse YouTube for a bit and watch some videos (Marble Hornets, TribeTwelve, and EverymanHYBRID are all good choices) to pick up the proper mood - or just go hog wild with the alienation, paranoia, voyeurism, and hopelessness. Work together with the Proxy’s player to create his eldritch stalker. Come up with a basic sketch of Its qualities and behaviors, then every once in a while in play, have It brutally deviate from those qualities and behaviors just as a reminder that It is inhuman, inscrutable, and inescapable. Spend Its strings on the Proxy to offer experience in exchange for acts ranging from grafitti to animal mutilation, from kidnapping to obscene phone calls, from befriending a certain person to murder. Never let the Proxy know what’s coming next or why. Frame scenes that will allow the Proxy to share some screen time with his subject both as his normal self (possibly a friend, acquaintance, or even lover of the subject) and as his masked stalker self. Don’t blow his cover unless the scene calls for a very hard move, as much of the point of the playbook is that the other characters don’t know exactly who the masked creeper is. Join the Proxy in encouraging his subject to accept offered experience and trigger The Sickness; suggest that a subject with one or more Proxy moves who wants to switch to a new skin choose to become a new Proxy.

For the MC Under the Unchained’s Skin

Under the Unseen’s Skin

You’ll want to take a carrot-and-stick approach to the Unchained and his repressed desires. On the one hand, present him with temptations - all the stuff he wants to do and be but can’t...but could if he just took another dose of the formula. Show him other people happily indulging in the stuff he feels like he can’t have and dangle opportunities for a quick change of self.

If the Unseen takes She’s Not There, emphasize the idea that nobody has any clue that she exists. Go out of your way to describe other people interacting with one another in the way that no-one does with her, walking around her without noticing in the hallway, having conversations through her, and completely ignoring her speech and actions. Her only respite from her ostracism will be indirect contact - phone calls, scribbled notes, video mail, etc. If she uses this kind of tactic, you can have an urban legend spring up around her at the school, so that she is known of, if not actually known.

On the other hand, hit him hard with life in the closet. Put him in situations where his inability to just be himself is painful and frustrating. Hold up a mirror to his selfloathing and dysphoria, and make it clear that all this ugly could go away if he just made the choice to change again. Isn’t it worth the risk of someone getting hurt? Be careful, though. Issues of identity and dysphoria might be painful for the reallife people you’re playing the game with. As always, know your group and their boundaries. If someone is playing the Unchained, it’s a good idea for everyone to discuss beforehand where the borders of comfortable, good-uncomfortable, and baduncomfortable are located. Remember that the Unchained is not, by default, split into “good” and “evil” selves. One self is created for the explicit purpose of indulging the secret passions of the other. For a more modern “split personality” take on this archetype, the player should take You’re Not Me! and you should regularly surprise him with what his other self has been up to without his knowledge.

If she takes See Through You, she’s just invisible, not unnoticeable. She’ll be expected to go to classes and other people will be aware of her - but that’s no guarantee they’ll interact with her. If she wears makeup to look normal, she’s one of those “invisible kids” who are neither popular nor victims, simply ignored by almost everyone. If she wears bandages or a mask (perhaps claiming a skin condition, burns, or deformity) then the ignoring will be much more conspicuous - she’s outcast because she’s presumed to be grotesque. In this case, any urban legends around her will be as a result of her invisible activities, and not associated with her actual identity. Be sure to give the Unseen lots of blackmail fodder! If she has Voyeur, ask her if she wants to be in scenes if something scandalous is going on. If she has Blackmailer or Threatening Whispers, those are also good signs that her player is interested in being a collector and abuser of secrets.
