Ways to Serve

Write a thank-you note to someone who won't expect it. Call your parents just to say hi. Ask someone to sit by you in Relief Society. Clean out an area of your house and donate things you no longer use. Shovel your neighbor's sidewalk. Donate blood. When you're going somewhere, call someone who's also going and ask if you can pick them up instead of driving separately. Get a subscription of The Ensign (or the Friend, New Era, etc) for a new convert you know. Help take down chairs after a church activity. Pay fast offering. Pick up trash as you walk along the sidewalk. Let the missionaries know you're willing to host them and an investigator for discussions, or to go with them next time they teach an investigator Talk to someone in the ward who you don't know very well. Participate in a walk or run for charity. Invite your neighbors over for dinner. Smile. Text, email, or drop off a small gift for the birthday of the sisters you visit teach. Tell a tired-looking cashier that they're doing a great job. Give up your seat to someone else. Feed the missionaries. Let someone go in line ahead of you at the store. Apologize when you've hurt someone's feelings or made a mistake. Leave a generous tip for your server at a restaurant. Offer to babysit for a mother you know. Pay for the person behind you at the drive thru, or buy a gift card for the store you're in and hand it to the person in line behind you. If you shop on Amazon.com, use Amazon Smile to donate a portion of your purchase price to a school or charity of your choice.. Introduce yourself to someone new. Go out of your way to do something nice for a family member. Hold a door open for the person behind you. Pray or fast for someone having a hard time. Sign up to be an organ donor. Give someone else the benefit of the doubt. Compliment a stranger. Make it a habit to go around the dinner table and ask everyone “How did you help someone today?” Recycle. Let another driver in ahead of you in traffic. Make it a goal to go an entire day (or week!) without complaining. When someone gives a talk or a lesson at church you enjoyed, tell them.
