Smap Consul,ng - Company Descrip,on • Based in Australia • Provides so;ware for mobile phone based data collec,on and analysis • Founder – Neil Penman – Graduated with honours from University of Western Australia 1982 – Worked in electronics and instrumenta,on R&D for Rolls Royce Aero engines in Derby,UK, 1983 – 1986 – Computer programmer, 1987 – 1996 – Consul,ng IT Architect at DMR, Fujitsu and IBM, 1996 – 2011 – Started Smap Consul,ng November 2011

Vision • Our vision is that Informa,on Technology should be used as a tool to make industries more efficient and effec,ve • We provide easy to use mobile data collec,on at low cost • This basic service can be extended where this adds value • We are focused on the technology – The work of conduc,ng an assessment or analysing the results can be done by your own DME department or with the assistance of one of our partners such as ezPilot – Today we are s,ll a company with one employee and we aim to grow to 3 people • This, we think, will be the ideal size to support the technology while keeping costs low © Smap Consul,ng Pty Ltd

Smap Consul,ng History - Early Days • While at IBM Neil began working on mobile data collec,on in his spare ,me as part of IBM’s “give back” program – Collabora,ng with World Vision and RMIT University
• We conducted our first survey in Cambodia in 2008 – 100 households – J2ME phones with a custom applica,on – Ques,ons and responses entered using Khmer font which I think was the first ,me Khmer had been put onto mobile phones for any purpose This photo is from that first survey. Smap Consul,ng History – Adop,on of ODK • We conducted further surveys using java phones in Mozambique and Malawi • In March 2011 we adopted ODK and Android as the mobile phone app • In November 2011 Neil le; IBM to form Smap Consul,ng • We now support data collec,on in over 50 countries

Standards • ODK / Java Rosa – The Smap server supports ODK compa,ble phone applica,ons such as odkCollect, geoODK, our own fieldTask and Zarkman Mobile – Forms can be exported as xlsForms and then loaded into other odkServer and vice versa, forms from other servers can be loaded into Smap
• KobotoolboxApi – We have just started adding support for the kobotoolboxApi – If you use this API to interoperate with your server then you can more easily switch between koboToolbox and Smap as the back end
