Message from our Head of School Chers amis, When Jeanne and I worked in Africa, one of our primary routes home for school breaks was through Charles De Gaulle. We always planned a few days to stop in Paris or tour a nearby wine region. Sometimes, we didn’t continue home for the break, France became the sole destination. Bourgogne and its spring wildflowers was one of our favorites. Regardless of the season, there is a timeless allure to France. Strolling the neighborhoods of Paris, picnicking in a park, taking in a classical concert, spending the day at Musée d’Orsay or the Louvre, or wine tasting in the countryside—the pace of life is slower, the atmosphere more romantic, and the food and wine divine. I can’t think of a better expression of joie de vivre and the spirit of our annual gala auction. Please join me in expressing deep appreciation to Ame Van Dyke. Her volunteerism, along with that of her team of fellow parents, has made tonight an evening to remember and an opportunity to renew the bonds that make our community strong. Merci beaucoup! Tonight, under the stars, I hope you are transported to Paris and the passion of the French for the places and institutions they love. We have every reason to celebrate our shared place, the school we love, and to join together in support of our efforts to bring learning to life for our children and our community. Bien des choses à tous! Brad Weaver, EdD | Head of School

—Auction Instructions—

Big Boards | The Big Boards are large boards featuring special auction items that will be prominently displayed during the reception. A bid sheet accompanies each of the items displayed on the Boards. Write your bid number and bid amount on as many auction bid sheets as you like. Please read item specifications and restrictions carefully. The Big Board auction in the Courtyard will close at 7:45pm. The highest bid at closing time is the winning bid. If you and another bidder are bidding on the same item when the auction is closing, a table monitor will ask each of you to write your final bid on a sheet of paper as a “Bid Challenge.” The person with the highest bid will win the item. The Live Auction | The auctioneer has the authority to determine and set bidding minimums and increments on each item. To bid, raise your paddle in the direction of the auctioneer or one of the spotters. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer is the purchaser. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, title of the item passes to the acknowledged bidder, together with full risk and responsibility for the item. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer has the sole and final authority to determine a successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the item. Once the live auction begins, it will continue without interruption until the last item is auctioned. How to Pay for Auction Purchases | To make it easy, we ask that you let us imprint your credit card when you arrive. The cashiers will have a tally of all purchases approximately fifteen minutes after the close of the live auction for your review. Auction Terms and Conditions | Your bid/paddle number is registered in your name. Use it when bidding, and do not allow anyone else to use it. All sales are final, and there will be no exchange or refunds. Items are sold “as is” with all faults and charms. Items are not to be returned to donors for exchanges or refund. Items are bought as described. There is no cash value on gift certificates. Unless otherwise specified, an event, service, excursion, class or certificate must be used within one year. Dates and times are at the mutual availability and convenience of the donor and buyer, unless other terms apply. Payment must be made in full by cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or check payable to Country Day Parents within seven (7) business days. Purchases that cannot be taken with you on Saturday, May 2, will be available for pickup at SCDS on Tuesday, May 5. The buyer must arrange delivery, unless otherwise stated. Bidders are welcome to form a syndicate to bid collectively on any of the items. (See section on Bidding Syndicates.)

18 g SCDS La Dolce vita 2015

Proxy bidding is permitted when the bidder has stipulated in writing his/her highest bid per item and secured the bid with a credit card number. An auction representative will act for the bidder. Winning bids are binding. (See section on Proxy Bids.) By his or her purchase, the buyer waives any claim for liability against Sonoma Country Day School, Country Day Parents or their agents, none of which are responsible for any injury or damage that may result from use of the property or services sold. Tax Deductibility | By law, the tax-deductible portion on an auction purchase is the amount in excess of its fair market value. Thus, if an item is valued at $50 and you pay $75, you have made a tax-deductible donation of $25. However, if you pay $45 for the same item, no portion of your purchase is tax deductible. The IRS requires verification of donations of $250 or more. Your Country Day Parents auction summary statement will include the value and purchase price for all items so that you may calculate the donation, if any, associated with each item you purchase, and your total donation amount. Donations to the special appeal are 100% deductible. Proxy Bids | If you are not present at the event, you may still bid on auction items through a bidding agent who acts on your behalf. You may ask a friend who is attending to act for you, or you may ask the school to appoint a proxy. How to Bid by School-Appointed Proxy | On the form, establish the maximum amount you are willing to pay for each item you want. Identify the items by lot number and item description. Provide your name and charge card information and authorization. Mail or fax the form by the deadline. Your proxy will bid for you up to your maximum. Your proxy will not enter your bid for the maximum unless competitive bidders force the price up to that point. If you are the successful bidder, the school will process your charge, notify you by phone, and ask you to make arrangements to pick up your item(s). Bidding Syndicates | Auction-goers are welcome to form a bidding syndicate, including absentee bidders, for live auction items. Please appoint one partner to represent the group in bidding. Partners who wish to share in the tax deduction, if any, on an item (please see Tax Deductibility) must pay directly and individually for their portion of the total price. The auction cashiers will be happy to split bids among syndicate partners. Please notify the cashiers at the time you check out if you are a syndicate partner.

If you have questions, please contact the SCDS Development Office at (707) 284-3263.

Pair of Mozie Bicycles Plus Fisher Vineyards Wine and Mad Fritz Beer

One-of-a-Kind Etched Bella 3-Liter 2012 Lily Hill Zinfandel

Mozie bicycles are more than a mode of transport—they are the stylish way to ride. Mozie bicycles are vintage and European-style bicycles that combine timeless design, functionality, and the true enjoyment of the cycling experience. These bicycles represent a new form of sustainable, chic transport, which exudes style and comfort, complete with quality engineering and modern technologies. Mozie bicycles were born out of the desire to design the perfect street bicycles—bicycles that would represent the innate style of the rider through a handsome elegant design. Bicycles that retain comfort and practicality without sacrificing the exterior look. Bicycles that uphold classical, stylish cycling heritage while embracing the technologies and improvements of the modern world. Each of these bikes contains a special gift too! One comes with a wooden six bottle case of Fisher Vineyards wines: two bottles each of UNITY Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted by the second generation of Fisher Vineyards: Whitney Fisher ’90, Robert Fisher ’92, and Cameron Fisher ’96. The other bike comes with a jeroboam (3 liter) of Mad Fritz, uniquely brewed beer from the Napa Valley. This new venture from Whitney Fisher ’90 and Nile Zacherle is aptly named after their two children, Madeleine (Maddie), who will be an SCDS kindergartner in the fall, and her younger brother Frederick (Fritz).

The pure beauty of this etched bottle speaks for itself and is matched only by the quality of its contents. Etched with our beloved school’s name and featuring a band of marching children playing musical instruments, this is a piece that is truly representative of SCDS pride. With grapes harvested from six different “micro-lots” of vines planted in 1915 on Bella’s acclaimed Lily Hill (named after SCDS alumna Lilia Adams), the 2012 vintage of the Lily Hill Zinfandel draws together a beautiful balance of ripe red fruit and spice. Bella’s estate vineyard is located on the western edge of the Dry Creek Valley, directly above their wine cave. The 2012 harvest had what winemaker Joe Healy called, “absolutely ideal growing conditions.” Picture-perfect weather led to an abundance of high-quality fruit. After awarding the wine 92 points in the Wine Advocate, Robert Parker stated that Lily Hill Zinfandel “offers copious quantities of Provencal garrigue-influenced red cherry and black cherry fruit intermixed with earth, pepper and spice. This medium to full-bodied, luscious, heady, sexy zinfandel should be consumed over the next 4-5 years.” Opening Bid: $600 Donors: Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves / Scott & Lynn Adams

Opening Bid: $1,500 Donors: Mozie Bicycles / Darren Buck, Mad Fritz Brewery / Whitney Fisher ‘90 & Nile Zacherle, Fisher Vineyards / Whitney Fisher ’90, Robert Fisher ’92, & Cameron Fisher ’96

Coined “The Splash Brothers” in a tweet by a Warriors.com writer in 2012, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are a force to be reckoned with in the NBA. In 2012-2013, the two combined to make 483 three-pointers, the most ever by an NBA duo. The next year, they extended their record by one more three-pointer to 484. With Curry making 42.4 percent of his three-point attempts and Thompson converting 41.7 percent, ESPN.com wrote that “no backcourt in history has rivaled the Splash Brothers in both categories of 3-point volume and efficiency.” The Warriors roared to 42-9 to start the first half of this season. They currently (as of April 1st) have the best record in the NBA and have clinched a playoff berth for the third year in a row. Front Sight Weapon Training

This is one of the most highly anticipated cases of wine Alexander Valley Vineyards has ever offered! It includes six different vintages of CYRUS packed in a wood collectors case. 70 Bottle Wine Console of Reclaimed French Oak and Cedar

La Grande Muraille de Vin The Great Wall of Wine

These gorgeous wine consoles were handcrafted by SCDS dad and master craftsman Vincent Rago with help from SCDS grandfather Roger Warburton, another master craftsman. They are made of French oak from Caymus Vineyards wine tanks and cedar from reclaimed fence boards. The stains of Cabernet Sauvignon can still be seen on the underside of the oak tops, while the cedar bases have been sanded smooth with a hand rubbed, satin, oil finish. With spaces one bottle deep, each console holds 70 bottles, and measures 35.5" x 51" x 14.25".

Vous sentez-vous chanceux? Are you feeling lucky? We’ve stocked the two beautifully handcrafted wine consoles featured on page 50 full of wonderful wines for your choosing. Every single bottle is valued at a minimum of $50. However at least half of the bottles are valued at more than that, and there are even gems worth more than $150. A list of wines will be available at the event. Simply pay $50 per bottle and grab whichever bottle (or bottles) you’d like! Where does the luck come into play, you ask? We wrapped the bottles and mixed them up! So, you won’t know what you’ve bought until you pull off the paper. Either way, you are sure to get your money’s worth and have a good bottle of wine to add to your cellar. Even better, you could be the hero of your table and pull the cork from a bottle of Kosta Browne and share it with your friends tonight! So, what do you say? We have wine bags! We have empty wine boxes and a hand truck! This is a really fun way to stock up on wine and benefit our school too. If you’re interested in buying either of these handcrafted 70 bottle wine consoles, they too are for sale on our Big Board. Please see page 50 for details.

There are two wine consoles, which are being sold separately. The top two bidders will each win! If you want both of them, please bid twice! Opening Bid: $400 each Donors: Vincent & Jana Rago, Roger & Karen Warburton

903 Oliver Ranch Tour and Reception at Catelli’s for 35 Friday, May 29, 2015

On Friday May 29, 2015 at 3:30pm, 35 people will ride in a luxury coach from Catelli’s in Geyserville to Oliver Ranch for a 4:00pm tour of the world-renowned sculpture ranch. Tours of the ranch are extremely limited and are only available through benefits supporting non-profit organizations. The tour length is approximately 2.5 plus hours, covering approximately 2.5 miles and 600 feet in elevation change (up and down). It can be likened to a light hike in the woods as paths are unpaved. The tour is not wheelchair accessible and comfortable walking shoes are essential. Located in the heart of Sonoma County, Oliver Ranch is home to 18 remarkable site-specific installations; the most recent of which is Ann Hamilton's The Tower where commissioned dance, poetry, theatre, and music performances take place. The picturesque 100-acre property was originally bought by Steve and Nancy Oliver in 1981 to graze a few extra sheep from, as Steve says, “My daughter’s 4-H project gone bad.” The ranch’s evolution from exiled sheep quarters to world-renowned sculpture ranch was gradual and organic, a natural convergence of the Olivers' longstanding passion for art and deep connection to the land. Following the tour, guests are invited to a private wine and appetizer reception at Catelli’s, a landmark third generation California-inspired Italian restaurant. Imagine a way for our students to engage in unstructured free-play while developing intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally. Imagination Playground is an innovative playground equipment system that transforms any space—schools, children’s museums, parks, camps—into a playspace that encourages learning, social development, and movement all while having fun. Comprised of an assortment of loose parts including foam blocks in uniquely designed shapes, Imagination Playground empowers children to constantly reconfigure the space around them, and design their own course of play. With Imagination Playground blocks, SCDS students can build a new world every day, making objects such as animals, rocket ships, and robots; imaginary places like houses, factories, and cities; and engage in dramatic scenarios, settings, and games to play. Most important, they will make the rules. Because Imagination Playground is child-directed and open-ended, it encourages self-expression through deep, joyful play. To learn more, watch the video at imaginationplayground.com. Our goal is to purchase 197 blocks and create a mobile Imagination Playground of our very own for our students to use anywhere on campus. We are already half way there! Purchase a block for SCDS by donating $100. SCDS Contribution Cabernet Sauvignon

SCDS Integrity Syrah

This wine specially made to benefit SCDS was one of the first in our new series of SCDS Wines on a Mission program. Contribution 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is from KD Vineyards, which was established in Alexander Valley by Katie and Denny Murphy in 1986. In 2009 the vineyard was replanted from Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon, and this wine was made from the first vintage of those grapes in 2012. The vineyard is situated on benchland overlooking the Russian River Valley, and benefits from the wonderful climate and soil that Alexander Valley is known for. The bottles were generously screen printed by Bergin Glass Impressions.

This wine specially made to benefit SCDS was one of the first in our new series of SCDS Wines on a Mission program. Integrity 2012 Syrah is from Vivio Vineyards, which is located high on Mount Taylor in the cool Bennett Valley AVA, one of the best places in California for Syrah. It was planted in 2003 by Joe and Priscilla Vivio to the noble Rhone grapes, Syrah and Rousanne. Initially planted with 3 premium Syrah clones from the ENTAV program(877, 174, 470), later the top clones from the US (Alban) and Australia (Grange) were added. These five clones have been cofermented to produce this dark and complex 2012 Syrah. The bottles were generously screen printed by Bergin Glass Impressions.

Auctioneer Greg Quiroga Tonight marks the tenth year that fundraising auctioneer Greg Quiroga has been our auctioneer, and we are thrilled to have him back. Greg is one of the nation's premiere fundraising auctioneers, and has been conducting fundraising auctions for nonprofit organizations all across the United States for over a decade. In addition to SCDS’s La Dolce Vita, he works with over 50 nonprofits, schools, foundations, arts organizations and charities nationwide to help raise over $10 million a year. Greg’s performances are always a fiery combination of passion, humor and heartfelt engagement. His favorite part of the auction is that moment when the crowd comes together to help change the world— through the paddle raise. He considers his job to be to “help people pay more than they should for things they don’t need in support of the Sonoma Country Day School” and he always manages to make people feel good about having done so. In 2014 Greg launched his new company, Stellar Fundraising Auctions (stellarsf.com), with longtime business associate Ed Gold. Greg and his wife Michele live in San Francisco with their son Ryder, who sold his first auction lot when he was just four.

What makes this experience so exclusive is that the ranch has NEVER had commercial hunters or lessees straining the wildlife population, and the property has been ranched for more than a 100 years by Julia Sugg Hochberg’s family. The ranch has a reputation for magnificent white tail deer, but you can also hunt for turkey, quail, javelina, and wild hog...or even predators such as bobcat, coyote, or mountain lion. Hunting guides who are familiar with the property will accompany you, and your hosts will happily take your prizes to local butchers and/or taxidermists, depending on your wishes.

BUY-IN ADVENTURE

Your accommodations will be the luxurious ranch headquarters compound, where every bedroom has an en suite. The ranch is remote, quiet, relaxing, and a good place to almost get off-the-grid. There is no land telephone. Occasionally, the Satellite TV and Internet work and just recently, 4G cell phone service has begun to reach the ranch. Brad and Josh will tend to your every need. There is no need to worry about guns and ammunition...though you are welcome to bring your own if you would like. Rifles are available for hunting deer and larger animals as well as shotguns for hunting birds. Winning bidders who wish to hint must purchase a Texas hunting license (available online). For the history buffs, there is interesting history on the ranch from Native American arrowheads to a historical marker showing the former location of a stage coach camp on the Southern Overland Route. The area was once inhabited by outlaw Tom Ketchum, known as Black Jack. The 7D Ranch headquarters is in Irion County, 35 miles due west of San Angelo, which is serviced by American Airlines connecting through Dallas. While air transportation is not included, transportation from the airport to the ranch will be provided. Suggested Opening Buy-in: $2,500/person Donated by: Sonoma Jet Center / Josh & Julia Hochberg, Bar None Hunt Company, Brad & Jeanne Weaver
