e had a good crowd of 33 members and guests at our August 6th meeting to hear Michael Hardy. The polls closed for the voting for our camp mascot at the end of that meeting. By a very slim margin, “Braxton” narrowly beat out “W. T. Sherman” to become our mascot’s name. We will be presenting membership certificates to three new members at our next meeting so please help me in officially welcoming them to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The Garner and Durham SCV Camps are joining together to hold a recruitment table at the Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham September 19-20th. If you are interested in helping out that weekend, please contact me ([email protected]) or Rick Miller ([email protected]). We are also signed up for a major recruitment event to take place at the Dixie Gun &

T

he August 6, 2015 meeting of 47th Regiment NC Troops, Camp 166, was held at The Forks Cafeteria in Wake Forest, NC. Commander Byron Brady called the meeting to order and welcomed those attending. There were 33 members and guests in attendance. The Invocation was provided by Chaplain Paul Berry and the Salutes to the Colors were led by Color Sergeant Bill Young. Camp Camp Adjutant David Henderson Lt. Commander Gary Hall read General Stephen D. Lee’s Charge to the SCV. Commander Brady welcomed all of our guests, including three NC Division UDC officers. He also welcomed our three new members since our last meeting, who were all in attendance! Camp Historian Dale Whitfield urged all members to send in a write-up about their ancestor if they have not already done so. Camp 2nd Lt. Commander Rick Miller reported we will be recruiting at the Dixie Gun Show on November 21-22, please let him know if you can help out. Past Camp Commander Frank Powell reported on recent heritage issues. Commander Brady announced we need six new members to meet our goal of 10 new members for 2015. There was no new business. Page 2

Our guest speaker for the evening was author Michael Hardy who spoke on “North Carolina as the Last Capital of the Confederacy.” President Davis and his cabinet left Richmond at 11 PM on April 2, 1865, arriving in Danville on April 4. They left Danville and arrived in Greensboro at 8 AM on April 11. They then went to Charlotte and the last meeting of the entire cabinet with Davis was on April 26, 1865. From April 11 through April 26, 1865 the capital of the Confederacy was in North Carolina. The vote was tallied to name our camp mascot and “Braxton” was the winner in a close contest. NC UDC Historian Melanie Perryman invited Camp 166 members to the NC UDC Division Convention Historical Evening program to be held October 2 at the Sheraton Convention Center in RTP at 8 PM. She also invited everyone to the UDC General Convention Historical Evening where Michael Hardy will be the speaker, on November 6 at 7:30 PM at the Sheraton in downtown Raleigh. A rousing version of Dixie was sung by all present. Chaplain Berry issued the benediction with special words for Anthony Hervey who was killed after attending a flag rally in Mississippi. Remember our support for TriArea Ministries and ladies and guests are always welcome. Respectfully submitted,

Frank B. Powell, III Past Commander

Knife Show to be held at the NC State Fairgrounds November 21-22, so please put this weekend on your calendar. Please try to bring a guest to our next meeting. Both before and during the War, Abraham Lincoln pushed to send freed slaves abroad. The policy, called colonization, had been supported by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay — a hero of Lincoln’s — and even Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose protagonists in Uncle Tom’s Cabin ultimately emigrate from the United States to Continued on page 4

~ Majority sees Confederate Flag as Southern Pride symbol not racist ~ Washington (CNN) American public opinion on the Confederate Flag remains about where it was 15 years ago, with most describing the flag as a symbol of Southern pride more than one of racism, according to a new CNN/ORC poll. And questions about how far to go to remove references to the Confederacy from public life prompt broad racial divides. The poll shows 57% of Americans see the flag more as a symbol of Southern pride than as a symbol of racism, about the same as in

2000 when 59% said they viewed it as a symbol of pride. Most oppose other efforts, including redesigning state flags which feature Confederate emblems or symbols to remove references to the Confederacy (57% oppose that), renaming streets and highways named after Confederate leaders (68% oppose that) and removing tributes to those who fought for the Confederacy from public places (71% oppose that). You know this poll really surprised the folks at CNN!
