THREE CATEGORIES— CATEGORIES— WHO GIVES A LOT OF TIME TO YOUR SPORT?

Who is eligible for the SPARC

Sport Volunteer Award, and why should we nominate them?

Any sport volunteer is eligible for the SPARC Sport Volunteer Award. In the past there has been an emphasis on coaches, and while we acknowledge the importance of coaching, Sport Wellington would like you to consider the full range of work which your volunteer taskforce does to keep your code prosperous. This award is for the coaches, kit men, the strappers, the soup makers, dial-a-drivers and sometime career advisors; the people who, through their fortitude, servitude and passion, have added so much to our community, and are deserving of our recognition. Who is eligible for the Wattie’s

Student Sport Volunteer Award, and why should we nominate them?

Participation in school sport is not just all about the superstars of the 1st XV or the 1st XI, who gather their laurels on the field of play. School sport is propped up by the student volunteers who, for a variety of reasons, support sport at their school. Whether it’s a mathematic number cruncher who loves cricket and volunteers their time to keep the score for a school team, or a devotee of Canoe Polo who has started an after school skills session at the local pool, or a year 13 student coach who mentors the 5th XI football team (occasionally dusting off the boots to go in goal). The Lifetime

Achievement award is for volunteers who have given 25 years+ service to community sport. Our regional sporting landscape has been shaped and nurtured over many years by a tireless legion of volunteer legends. These are the people who have given countless hours over mornings, evenings, weekends to create sporting opportunities for our community. Be it the coach who prepares a quality coaching programme for yet another generation of talent, or the administrator, who has seen the limelight come and go, knowing that their silent years of backroom work contributed to their sport’s day in the sun, and that they were there through the hard times and the good.

NAOMI RATANA (PAEKAKARIKI SCHOOL) Naomi Ratana is the Logan Brown Coach of the Month for July 2011. Naomi coaches a number of Netball teams at Paekakariki School and her dedication to coaching sees her at the school four days a week with students aged from five to 12 years. Naomi is passionate about ensuring young children enjoy their Netball experience and offers encouragement to all regardless of their ability. When not coaching Netball at the school, Naomi helps to raise funds for Netball gear by organising sausage sizzles. Naomi’s other interest is in coaching Tennis, so when she is not at Netball you will catch her down at the Paekakariki Tennis club coaching children from the Paekakariki Community

JIM KOSEGA (WAINUIOMATA HIGH SCHOOL) Sport Wellington proudly names Jim Kosega as the Logan Brown Volunteer of the Month for July 2011. Jim has put in immeasurable hours into the Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt sporting communities with his dedication towards sport over the last 10 years. Jim coaches, umpires and is the convener of Volleyball and Netball at Wainuiomata High School. HOW CHILDREN LEARN BEST Learning is a complex process that is not directly observable. One of the coach's challenges is to provide a learning rich environment for their young athletes. Learning can be enhanced through simple skills such as making sessions fun, challenging, safe and age appropriate. Providing young athletes with plenty of praise will enhance their confidence and motivation to learn. No two athletes are the same, so coaches also need to consider strategies for dealing effectively with difference both at training sessions and on game day. Asking questions to gain clarification of players understanding is a great tool for coaches to use to get feedback from their athletes. One of the more successful learning tools is the use of game-play. By allowing athletes to solve a variety of playful challenges, coaches can encourage the players to learn as much as possible for themselves without interruption. Play is a great tool for children trying out and mastering new skills, concepts, and experiences. Play contributes to how children view themselves as learners. As they play, they resolve social, emotional, and intellectual issues by coming up with new solutions and ideas. Have you heard this before? Tell me, I'll forget ... hearing and listening are not one of the stronger senses in the brain and nervous system. Show me, I'll remember ... seeing is one of the strongest senses in the central nervous system [brain]. Observation! Involve me, I'll understand ... this would include all of the senses possible.... hearing, seeing, feeling, touching, etc....also involvement means in most cases experimental learning.

“Market feedback, from whatever source, can be absolutely priceless” Sebastian Coe
