THE NEWSLETTER OF THE NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY MARCHING AND BAND ALUMNI ORGANIZATION

APRIL 2014

President’s Message: Fundraising Campaign and Enrichment Opportunities Dear NUMBALUMS, I hope this spring 2014 edition of the Growl finds you on a warming trend. The NUMBALUMS are working on several projects to achieve our mission of promoting fellowship among alumni, providing enrichment opportunities, and supporting the Northwestern Liz Driskell - NUMBALUMS Bands. President On March 14, Northwestern officially launched the “We Will” campaign to raise $3.75 billion for all Northwestern programs. A major pillar of the program is improving the student experience. The NUMBALUMS are embarking on a drive to help NUMB with funding to provide an experience befitting The Finest Band in the Land. Working with Dan Farris, Director of Athletic Bands, and members of the Athletics Development team, we are developing an outreach plan to NUMBALUMS, current and former parents, and other friends of NUMB with a goal of raising $400,000 over the next five years. The endowment will be used to help provide financial support to members of NUMB, attract students to leadership roles in the Band, assist in membership retention, and aid the Band department in securing the resources they need to be leaders in field innovation. Please consider a donation to the Northwestern Bands “Push On” Fund. Until we can get an official website set up, please contact Fred Smith at [email protected] to make donations. All contributions, big or small, count toward

the goal of broadening the University’s base of annual support among alumni, parents, and friends during this campaign. Also in these pages, you’ll find information on upcoming NUMBALUMS enrichment opportunities, including a revamped Waa-Mu event in May. You’ll also learn that NUMBALUMS age 55+ qualify for a fantastic national music program called “New Horizons Band” for senior citizens looking for an outlet to perform and get reacquainted with their instruments. We’ll give you a sneak peak into the plans for Homecoming 2014. If you’re interested in leading your class by serving as a reunion chair, please let me know and I’ll help get you in touch with members of your class. The Boneheads are also hosting their second quinquennial Bonehead reunion--and a generous alum has promised to match the section’s contributions to the Northwestern Bands “Push On” Fund (up to $500). Read on for details! I am sure you will enjoy this issue and I look forward to seeing you at future events! P&G, Elizabeth S. Are you ready for Homecoming 2014? It’s time to start planning! The NUMBALUMS want YOU to find your classmates and get them to come back with you to your milestone reunion (5, 10, 15, etc.). Last year, the entire sousa section from the class of ‘93 made the trip (see photo at left), and the class of 2012 were the most represented. There are plenty of activities for everyone. We need some go-to people for each class. Please send an email to Liz Driskell at [email protected] if you would like to get more involved.

The entire class of ‘93 sousaphones marched at halftime--Jean and Dave Mrachko, Matthew Patten, and Andrew Pigott. Their participation was made possible by Josh Thompson (BSM95), who provided extra sousaphones for them to play! Did you know? This year, Homecoming actually starts Thursday night! If you’re in town early, attend the Thursday evening NUMB practice and spirit session (see photo at right) to watch the band in near-final form and get a dose of what today’s NUMBers do to get pumped up before the big game. In the words of NUMBALUM Josh “Huffy” Berner (Grinder 1997-8): NUMBALUMS, here’s your chance to attend a separate Thursday night spirit session -- special NUMBALUMS edition! Join us if you dare!....and your replacement hip isn’t acting up. You remember what happened last year. What a scene! You writhing on the ground desperately hanging on to your lifesize stuffed Willy the Wildcat figurine as a suspiciously intelligent pack of wild raccoons tried to rip it from your fingers and use it as a furry battering ram to knock down the door to Alison Hall, behind which your wife was hiding in the pitch dark, a tiny, purple pencil light as her only source of hope! We definitely don’t want a repeat. So please take your pain meds this time. Look for more details in the fall edition of The Growl. All photos on this page courtesy of Liz Driskell. Coming Home After 25 Years By Kevin McDonald (WCAS90; Clarinet 86-87) I remember John P. Paynter conducting the Alma Matter and I remember marching toward the corn at band camp. I also remember some very cold Saturdays supporting the ‘Cats, and, of course, the wonderful people that I met in the band. The last time I marched or played the clarinet was in the fall of 1987. Ryan Field was still Dyche Stadium, and I was a sophomore. I spent two amazing years in NUMB. I now live in my hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with my wife, Deborah; daughter, Blake Ellington, 8; and son, Jackson Coltrane, 6. As the names of our kids suggest, music is very important to us. Football is also important to us. My hometown notwithstanding, we have had season football tickets at Northwestern for more than 10 years. At the games, we sit with two other NUMBALUMS who live in Madison, WI. Seeing them is just as important to me as going to the games. Over the years, I thought many times about marching at Homecoming, which eventually turned into talking about it, and finally, doing it. I came to the conclusion that it was time, despite not having played or marched for over 25 years, and despite realizing that I may not know or remember anyone there. I just wanted to be on the field with the Band to see what old memories I would recall, what fun I could have, and to see what new memories I could create.

My main concern coming back after a quarter century was that I would not be able to play the clarinet. After having little success playing an old instrument that I borrowed from a friend, I solved this problem by purchasing the best clarinet that $99 can buy on Amazon. No kidding. I contacted the NUMBALUMS, requested and received the music a couple of weeks early, and practiced for my Ryan Field debut. Playing again at Homecoming was an unforgettable experience. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and helpful. Practice did pay off and I played many more notes than I missed, although it quickly became clear that regardless of my ability, I still would have been welcomed with open arms. I talked to a few people that I recognized from so long ago, but also to so many more people from other years who shared their stories of life in the Band. I now have great new memories of NUMB: marching in the parade next to Bob Janes, a fellow clarinet player who marched in the Rose Bowl in 1949; waving at my kids from the field; participating in the big circle at the end of the postgame show; and the interesting conversations that I had with so many NUMBALUMS. I’m looking forward to returning this fall. Maybe I’ll play a few more notes and hit a few more hash marks, and maybe not. No matter what, I know that I will be having fun, because I’ll be in the Band. If you have never been back, or if it’s been awhile since you’ve returned, consider making the trip. Your fellow NUMBALUMS will support you, and there are new memories to be made.

Push On, a New Tradition By Michael San Gabino (BSM13; Tenor 09-10; Drum Major 11-12) If you didn’t have the guts to look at the score board this past season at Ryan Field, you might have glanced at the student section and noticed some hands flying in the air during the second ending of “Push On,” mimicking the cymbal part. During the second or third game of 2013, I first noticed a handful of students playing along with their imaginary cymbals. Gradually throughout the year, more students proved they were natural cymbal players. What ignited this movement? I have no idea. But as any college sports fan knows, movements that all audience members can do—not just the band or the spirit squad—foster unity. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the internal NUMBisms, but perhaps this season more than ever, let’s try and promote this simple movement to literally push on and show our perseverance as Wildcat fans. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Grab your favorite cymbal alum for a refresher or look over to the passionate students across the field this season. And, as always, don’t forget to give a hearty “Go ‘Cats” afterward!

Bonehead Reunion 2014 Calling all trombone alumni! The boneheads are hosting their second quinquennial Trombone Reunion at Homecoming 2014. Our first reunion in 2009 saw dozens of attendees, a delicious pizza dinner, and a hard-fought evening of whirleyball, and the section has maintained exemplary attendance at each Homecoming since. If you’re not already on the bonehead listserv, make sure you get the official invite and information by contacting Skittles (C15) at [email protected] and Viscount (WCAS12) at [email protected].

Officially, there were 168 NUMBALUMS registered for Homecoming. Bob Janes (B55) won the “Forever Purple” award for his 58th Homecoming. Zack Moy (WCAS11) traveled 2,145 miles from San Francisco to Ryan Field to win the “Go The Distance” award. Fifty-five NUMBALUMS marched in Friday night’s parade. Piccolo player Betty Hibben (WCAS60) marched in the Homecoming parade for the first time. Women weren’t allowed to be in the marching band when she was a student. Read about Betty’s experience with the innovative New Horizons Band on page 4 of this edition of The Growl. The newest NUMBALUMS, the class of 2013, had 8 recent graduates participate in their first Homecoming. The class with the highest participation was 2012, with 20 members. The section with the most participation were the Trombones with 24 registered members. Percussion was a close second at 23.

Kids Fare, On the Other Side By Kingsley Tang (BSM04) It’s often said that being a parent changes your perspective on everything. It’s true. When my son Ollie was born last spring, many aspects of my life took on a new dimension. I expected this change, but I never dreamed that being a parent would change my perspective on Kids Fare. Let’s be honest. For most band members, Kids Fare is hardly the highlight of the season. Even though I work with kids for a living, it never was particularly meaningful for me either when I was in the Band. There was the time when a kid literally marched into me and started crying hysterically, which led to about a month of my section jokingly mocking me for my cruel treatment of kids. Then there was the time that a kid went up to my friend Mike and without warning stuck his entire mouth on his saxophone mouthpiece, blew as hard as he could and ran off, coating the mouthpiece with a sticky mixture of saliva, snot, and boogers. Of course, there were also cute memories like watching a flock of kids engulf the drumline during the instrument “petting zoo” and seeing the color guard make the kids giggle by waving their flags over their heads. And especially since Mr. Farris became a dad as well, he channels Mr. Rogers while narrating the program. Ten years after my last Kids Fare, my wife Diana and I attended our first Kids Fare as parents. Of course, we were excited to take our son to this event. NUMB had such a positive effect on our lives and we couldn’t wait to share it with Ollie. However, we were also worried. The thing is, Ollie’s first football game was difficult. We saw NUMB during pregame, but we didn’t make it to halftime. Ollie doesn’t like loud noises, the logistics of caring for a baby in a football stadium were a bit challenging, and it just became clear that he wasn’t enjoying himself.

We considered simply waiting until next year to introduce Ollie to NUMB, but then we remembered Kids Fare. It seemed perfect. Kids Fare was shorter, and it was indoors. And this time we armed ourselves with baby headphones. As soon as we walked in the stadium before the concert, Mr. Farris greeted us warmly and really made us feel welcome. When NUMB hit the fanfare, I was struck by how crisp their sound was, the musical accuracy and the energy of their sound. Then I panicked for a second, concerned about how the volume was affecting Ollie. As I turned to him, I saw him sitting on Diana’s lap with his purple headphones gazing down at NUMB with wonder. Kids Fare was a great experience. The length of the show was perfect for Ollie, who was barely five months old at the time. We were so happy to be able to share NUMB with him. And next year he can actually participate. One of the reasons that I loved being in NUMB was that it was a way that I could serve the community. NUMB members don’t get paid to march at football games; they do it to spread spirit and enthusiasm. Kids Fare goes beyond this. It reaches out to people who

don’t necessarily enjoy football. It teaches kids about music. It also creates a space that allows parents and children to connect with NUMB in a unique way that doesn’t happen at other times in the season. Part of me wants to go back in time and tell my undergrad self to stop whining as I’m getting up to go to Kids Fare. Since this is impossible, I’ll do this: Hey NUMB! Thanks for doing Kids Fare. It means a lot to your audience. Don’t forget that this audience is full of NUMBALUMS and their children. I can’t put on that uniform anymore and show my son what Pride & Guts is all about, but you can. Thanks. HEY BAND! Ryan Field is shaken up. Athletics recently announced the reconfigured Ryan Field--click here to see the new seat/pricing chart. As part of the changes, NUMB has been moved to section 111, on the east side of the field, along with the student section. The band’s pregame and halftime shows will still face the press box (west) side of the field, as usual. Of course, there are pros and cons to seats on each side of the field--but regardless of where your seats end up, we look forward to seeing you at games and tailgates next season!
