Dear Charger Family, We are excited to report that our freshman team model has proven to help students become more academically successful. As you recall, we placed freshmen in teams where they shared the same four core teachers and increased their academic rigor by placing them all in Biology and World History. The purpose of this design was to maximize student success as they made the transition from middle school to high school. We wanted students to have a more personalized experience as we recognized that all freshmen face similar challenges when they enter high school: academic rigor, increased responsibility, and socialization. The other reason for this was to meet one of our school goals, which is "To increase the percentage of students who are on track to graduate to at least 70% in each grade level as measured at the start of the next school year." We are proud to share that as of semester 1, we had 77% of freshmen pass all of their classes and another 9% who are very close and are only a half-credit behind. If these students stay on top of their studies, they will be "on track" to graduate without the need for intervention outside of the regular school year. Please note that this does not mean that the other students can't graduate on time, it simply means that they may need to attend summer school to "catch up." Our teachers continue to work hard to ensure that all students have positive experiences while at McClintock. They continue to work with their PLC teams to refine their instructional practices to ensure that all students learn at high levels. We do, however, need you to become partners in this endeavor by ensuring that your child is working to the best of his/her potential. This could be done as easily as contacting their teachers, and asking them to show you their homework. We look forward to successful second semester and thank you for your continued support of McClintock! Best regards, Mayra B. Arroyo

How did McClintock High School get its name? 1) It sounded cool. NO! 2) It was named after a hair dresser from New York. NO! 3) The first drummer for the Beatles was named McClintock. NO! 4) After the street. NO! (Well, kind of...) McClintock High School is named after James H. McClintock (1864-1934). He was born in Sacramento, California. Captain McClintock commanded Troop B for Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, long before Roosevelt became president of the United States. The famed Rough Riders were a major force during the Spanish-American War as a mounted fighting unit. As the legend goes, the Rough Riders became known as the "Chargers" for the way they went into battle. We can all imagine Teddy Roosevelt saying "Let’s go, Chargers!" A Rough Rider was not allowed to leave his duty, even to tend to the wounded, and the motto "Once a Charger, Always a Charger" came into being. Please note that McClintock’s mascot is not a lightening bolt as they have in San Diego! After McClintock's time with the Rough Riders, he settled in the valley and was elected a colonel in what would become the National Guard. McClintock was a major player in the development of our area and was appointed postmaster of Phoenix. He continued a career in writing and wrote for his brother’s newspaper, The Salt River Herald. He wrote for newspapers, magazines, and literary works. McClintock was a member of the expedition to survey the site of the future Roosevelt Dam. McClintock was also a member of the first graduating class of the Territorial Normal School, now Arizona State University. Colonel McClintock later served as Arizona's official state historian, thus being honored not only in the naming of a high school, but also in the selection of the name of the yearbook, the Historian.

McClintock High School

It is the belief of the faculty, staff, and administration that school pride, morale, and image are influenced by the general appearance of our students. McClintock High School expects student dress and grooming to reflect high standards of personal conduct, so that each student’s attire promotes a positive, safe, and healthy atmosphere within our school. A committee of parents, students, and staff have created a set of dress code guidelines. We want to provide freedom for students to express themselves within the parameters listed below: Attire or accessories which advertise, display, and/or promote any drug, alcohol, tobacco, sexual activity, or violence, or feature language which is disrespectful, lewd, vulgar, profane or obscene, and/or express bigotry towards any group or person, are not allowed. Any attire or grooming deemed to be gang-related is prohibited when such attire or grooming creates an atmosphere of threat, intimidation or undue pressure, disrupts the educational environment/process, or interferes with curriculum goals/educational objectives. Dress, jewelry, skin markings temporary or permanent, and other accessories that present a risk to the health, safety, and general welfare of students, or which express obscenities, expose the chest (no cleavage), abdomen, upper thighs or buttocks are prohibited. Body piercing that is a safety hazard and/or hinders performance in the classroom is not allowed. Shoes will be worn. Slippers/house shoes are not appropriate footwear at school. Sunglasses are prohibited in the classroom. Hats and other accessories may be allowed/disallowed at faculty/ staff discretion. Pajama tops and/or bottoms are not appropriate school attire. Undergarments (such as bra straps, boxers, etc.) should not be visible. Exceptions may be made for uniforms, formal attire, and/or costumes.

Page 13

Cell Phones and Personal Electronics Administrators continuously receive concerned complaints regarding cell phone usage during class time. The teachers tell us students are inattentive due to headphones and cell phones. Teachers sometimes do have legitimate reasons for cell phone usage in class (Kahoot, StudentVue, etc.), and we do not want to institute any changes that would eliminate those options for teachers. Therefore, we will begin to consistently enforce the current no cell phone, no earbuds during class time policy . Unless specifically directed by a teacher to use them, those items should not be seen or used.

 Video announcements demonstrating

appropriate and inappropriate use of cell phones  Signage across campus Failure to adhere to this policy will result in the teacher confiscating the phone and giving it to the appropriate administrator. The administrator will return the phone to the student at the end of the school day. A warning will be issued for the first offense, an hour of detention for the second offense, and two hours of detention for the third offense. Parents may need to come in after three offenses.

This policy will minimize inappropriate cell phone usage during class time, and create an atmosphere focused on student achievement without unnecessary distractions. Technology use is not unique to teenagers and school. It is We have communicated an issue within our society, and we hope this helps foster responsible behavior in our this with students via: students.

Lost and stolen electronic devices are the responsibility of the student, and use of these items are at the student’s own risk for loss/theft. McClintock is not responsible for stolen or missing electronic devices.

A bicycle is stolen every 7 seconds in the U. S.

Is Your Bike Registered? Thousands of bicycles are recovered by law enforcement each year, but due to a lack of identification, few are returned. BikeGuard: The Free Bike Registry is a service hosted by MyAssetTag, and its parent company, SmartSign, to identify your bike in case of loss or theft. Registered bicycles and their owners are cataloged through asset tags stamped with an individual ID number. The asset tags and registration are offered to bike owners across North America for free. Why we do it: The cyclists at MyAssetTag know what it's like to lose a bike. Discovering that bicycles languish in the storerooms of police stations because they lack proper identification, we decided to try and change that situation by providing an easy means of identification.  Every bicycle owner may register their bicycle with Bike Guard.  There is no fee to register your bicycle.

Simply register your bike online and order your tags. Once your tags arrive, put them on your bike. If your bike is stolen, the tags will enable anyone with a Smartphone to contact you anonymously when they find it.

Grad Night Boosters Support All MHS Students Parents of Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors — we need your input to keep this awesome tradition going! What is Grad Night? The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. ~ Robert Frost, 1874-1963 American poet

HOSA has 16 students preparing to attend the HOSA State Leadership Conference, which takes place in Tucson, from April 1-3. They will all be competing in their specific healthcare-related events, and each will be striving for scores high enough to earn a place at the International Leadership Conference in Dallas this summer. Wish them luck!

Lost, Found — and Forgotten? A variety of things found on campus have been turned in to Lost & Found — but no one’s come in to claim most of them. If you’ve lost something, be sure to check in at the Attendance Office before school is out and see if your lost things have been found!
