SUNRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE It is our belief that a well-‐dressed student not only behaves better but is more likely to see better academic results as well. A clear list of our expectations is listed below, but our philosophy is also clear. Students who dress appropriately for school are clearly focused on their education. From the moment they begin to dress in the morning they realize that it is a school day, and therefore, the day has a purpose. We take great pride in how our students dress and believe that cleanliness, good grooming, neatness and modesty are very important standards of appearance for each of our students. The SRMS dress code policies under the standards of the OCPS Student Code of Conduct are below: Clothes shall be worn as they are designed: suspenders over the shoulders and fastened, pants secured at the waist, belts buckled, no underwear/sleepwear as outerwear, no underwear or other undergarments or parts of undergarments should be exposed. Pants will be worn at the waist. Belts are required on pants that have belt loops. No rolled up pants. For safety reasons, no oversized ornamental belt buckles or clothing may be worn. No midriffs, short shirts, halter tops, tank tops, backless/strapless clothing, unless an appropriate shirt is worn under the garment. Jackets or button-‐down shirts worn over the garment will not suffice. Shirts must be worn at all times. No short skirts, dresses or shorts. Hemlines of shorts, skirts, and dresses shall be no shorter than mid-‐thigh. Wearing tights and/or leggings under short attire will not suffice. No hats, sunglasses, bandanas, or headgear of any kind are to be worn or carried. Additionally, for safety reasons, no rosaries are to be worn outside the shirt, no oversized beads or festival-‐style beads may be worn. No chains hanging from the neck, belt, pocket, or attached wallets. No clothing promoting alcohol, smoking, drugs or drug usage, profanity, sexual connotations, provocative language or suggestions, violence, racial slurs, vulgarities, or any other suggestion that is distracting to the learning environment. No see through clothing. No skintight clothing which reveals underclothing outlines or body parts, including spandex, exercise wear, and biker shorts. Physical education uniforms should not be worn outside the physical education class. No clothing or accessories should have spikes or other potentially dangerous objects. No facial jewelry including nose, eyebrow, lip, check, or tongue piercing. No open-‐heeled shoes. Shoes must have closed heels or straps on the heels. No wheels on shoes. No holes in clothing. All shirts worn must have at least a cap sleeve. No tank tops or sleeveless shirts may be worn. Shirts must cover back, chest, shoulders, and upper arm (at least with a cap sleeve). No all black attire or all camouflage clothing. Hair styles must not be distracting. For example, no Mohawks/Faux Hawks or designs shaved onto the scalp. Hair color should be natural (black, blonde, red, and brown). This includes highlights or streaks. For safety reasons, no coordination of clothing beyond team and school shirts. No clothing, hairstyles, or ornamentation deemed inappropriate by the administration. If a first-‐time dress code violation occurs, the student's parent will be notified and asked to bring a change of clothing to the school. If the parent cannot bring a change of clothes, the student will be placed in In-‐School-‐ Suspension for the remainder of the day. Repeated violations may result in more severe consequences for insubordination and repeated misconduct. Administration reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of clothing, hairstyles, and ornamentation/accessories. The school administration also reserves the right to adjust or change if any policy item is deemed inappropriate for the school environment.
