Please help your Wyngate neighbors! Martin Marietta, the company that owns the existing quarry on Westgate Road, is petitioning the City of Raleigh to rezone the property at the corner of Westgate Road and Ebenezer Church Road so they can expand their blasting and dump piles of waste material towering 80 feet tall. This is equal in height to the sand dunes of Jockey’s Ridge at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Most homes in this area top out around 30 - 35 feet in height so these mountains will tower 45 feet over them! Westgate Road will be moved 600 feet north to give the quarry 19 additional acres for blasting. This move will bring blasting within 800 feet from the homes of your neighbors in the Wyngate subdivision. Not only will this blasting be closer, the quarry will be surface mining which is much more intense than the vibrations you currently feel. Only 150 feet away from the Wyngate community they will start piling dirt up to reach heights of 80 feet. Just think of the dust that will travel over into their yards causing many health concerns. This toxic dust has already been linked to increase the chance of developing COPD, lung cancer and asthma. Since these dirt piles are going to be so high (20 feet taller than most trees in the area, with no protection from the wind) this dust is going to quickly blanket the entire neighborhood and surrounding Raleigh area!
Effects of the Proposed Quarry
Economic loss from decreased property values because of your close proximity to this expanded quarry and mountainous wasteland. You can’t hide an 80 foot tall landfill! Excessive noise and dust from large machinery and blasting, as well as crushing of rock and repeated explosions. Spewing of rock particulates and dust into the air we breathe. Loss of natural land contour and Geomorphic effects. Disturbance of habitats/biota, forcing animals into populated areas. Explosions strong enough to mimic earthquakes and strong enough to cause foundation and wall cracking. Soil erosion into Sycamore tributary which feeds into Umstead Park and the Neuse river.

Our attorney advised us that we can use the petition to our advantage with full names (not anonymous). If you feel compelled to leave a comment, please keep it relevant to the issues presented at the City Council Public Hearing i) not in line with the Comprehensive Plan; ii) area was previously rezoned in 1999 with conditions that our subdivision approved with Martin Marietta; iii) Reduction in property value. *Please feel free to forward the petition to area homeowners and other Raleigh residents* 2.
