MAJOR ISSUES IN MODERN BIOLOGY
Larry Gold Professor, Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology University of Colorado, Boulder Chairman of the Board, CEO, Founder- SomaLogic, Inc., Boulder, CO
Seminar Title: Human Proteomics and Healthcare Dr. Larry Gold began his career at the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with basic research on bacteria and bacteriophage. Following Dr. Gold’s co-invention of the SELEX process in 1989, the lab shifted its focus to human disease. SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential enrichment) is a combinatorial chemistry methodology in which vast numbers of oligonucleotides (DNA, RNA, or unnatural compounds) are screened rapidly for specific sequences that have appropriate binding affinities and specificities toward any target. SELEX also has been used to identify new ribozymes and deoxyribozymes. Dr. Gold is widely recognized for his pioneering entrepreneurship in the early stages of biotechnology. He co-founded an early biotech company, Synergen, and then founded NeXstar, a company that discovered Macugen, a drug to treat age-related blindness. Currently, Dr. Gold serves as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of SomaLogic, a proteomics company, as well as Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU). The CU Gold Lab today focuses on the utilization of biological and information technology to improve healthcare. During his prestigious career, Dr. Gold has received many honors, including the CU Distinguished Lectureship Award, the National Institutes of Health Merit Award, the Career Development Award, and the Chiron Prize for Biotechnology. In addition, Dr. Gold is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.
