CURRICULUM

Strategic Management of Nonprofit Organisations is a three-day rigorous workshop designed to assist the management teams of non-governmental and nonprofit organisations to use strategic frameworks and tools to improve their organisations. The workshop presents a unique learning opportunity for middle to senior executives steering non-governmental and nonprofit organisations to interact with colleagues from around the country and with Mr. Frank Schell of the Harris School of Public Policy, University of Chicago, along with some key NGO and nonprofit leaders of India. Participants are able to apply concepts, techniques, and speaker feedback to their work as they progress through the sessions, allowing immediate impact at their organisations.

The Strategic Management of Organizations workshop comprises of modules, including:

WHO SHOULD APPLY? Strategic Management of Nonprofit Organisations is designed to reach an audience of middle to senior management of non-governmental and nonprofit organization from around India. The three-day workshop offered by the Harris School of Public Policy of University of Chicago connects emerging leaders of the nonprofit ecosystem through highly interactive and practice oriented sessions. This model enables participants to reflect on and implement the principles taught in real-time.

 

Participants in this workshop will be working in groups and rethinking about their roles and organisations in real time. They will be held to the same standards of performance as their colleagues attending residential workshops at the Harris School of Public Policy. SPEAKERS

FRANK SCHELL is a Lecturer on South Asian affairs at Chicago Harris since 2009 and has served on the Dean’s International Council, leading the Council’s delegation to India in 2008. After retiring from an illustrious career in international corporate and institutional banking, for several years he served as the President and CEO of Chicago Commons, a leading social services provider in early childhood education, child welfare, senior care, employment training, and youth counseling services in economically disadvantaged areas of Chicago. Mr. Schell holds a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. GURCHARAN DAS is an Indian author, commentator and public intellectual. After serving as the CEO of Procter & Gamble India and Managing Director, Procter & Gamble Worldwide (Strategic Planning), he took early retirement in 1995 to become a full-time writer. His bestsellers include India Unbound and The Difficulty of Being Good. He is also a regular columnist for six Indian newspapers and writes periodic pieces for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, and Newsweek. Dr. Das has graduated from Harvard University with honors in Philosophy and attended Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program, where he is featured in three case studies. KANUPRIYA SEKHRI, she is currently leading the Communication and Engagement for the Indian School of Development Management (ISDM) to help them build their brand and maximize their reach in the development sector. In 2008, she joined as a consultant with the American India Foundation for their award-winning Rickshaw Bank project and helped scale up the project to different cities through partner organizations. She joined the School of Inspired Leadership (SOIL) in 2009 as part of the founding team where she spear-headed the Social Innovation Program, under which she worked with more than 30 social sector organizations for the student voluntary program LUIS MIRANDA advises and supports many not-for-profit organisations in India, using his networks. He is the Managing Trustee of the Collective Good Foundation, Chairman of Centre for Civil Society and Chairman of CORO. He is also Senior Advisor to Morgan Stanley Infrastructure, Advisor to the Nadathur Group and has been involved in setting up two successful companies: HDFC Bank and IDFC Private Equity. A member of the Global Advisory Board of Chicago Booth, he received an MBA from the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago, and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. SAFEENA HUSAIN is the Founder and Executive Director at Educate Girls – a non-profit organisation that aims at tackling issues at the root cause of gender inequality in India’s education system. After Safeena spent 15 years working with grassroots projects in Latin America, South Africa & Asia, she together with a local team, conducted a 50- school project in Pali district, Rajasthan. Post its successful test phase, Safeena established Educate Girls as an NGO in 2007. In the last eight years, Educate Girls has metamorphosed into a 12,000+ schools program with over 3.8 million total beneficiaries of its programmatic interventions. She is an alumnus if London School of Economics and Harvard School of Business.

SANTHOSH BABU is the Managing Director of ODA (Organization Development Alternatives) and author of India’s first book on coaching published by Wiley. He also writes a weekly column in Business Today called ‘Buddha in the Boardroom’. An engaging and inspiring speaker on leadership and strategy, some of his recent keynote addresses include the Porter Price Event 2014 in Delhi, the HR Conference of India, the CII Southern Region HR Conference, and the TIE Annual Conference. Santhosh has worked as a teacher in Bhutan, with the WWF and travelled around the world as a backpacker before starting at OD Alternatives. VIDYA SHAH is the CEO of EdelGive Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Edelweiss group. In addition to being a board member of Edelweiss, she serves on the board of various prominent organisations like Agastya International Foundation, Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, Asian Venture Philanthropy Network, Common Purpose, Women on Wings, Toolbox India Foundation and Masoom. Everywhere her role enables her to contribute strategically to help build stronger and more sustainable institutions. Vidya earned an MBA degree from IIMAhmedabad
