Mission Statement

What is a Mission Statement? A Mission Statement is a statement of a district’s primary purpose and reason for existing. Typically just a sentence or two, it communicates a sense of direction for the entire district and is intended to remain relatively unchanged over time.

The Strategic Framework Steering Committee spent considerable time developing a Lunenburg Public School Mission Statement. Input from numerous school community constituencies was considered.

The Mission Statement of the Lunenburg Public Schools

The Mission of the Lunenburg Public Schools is to provide all students with the skills, confidence, and a passion for life-long learning so that they may find their own paths to successful careers, engaged citizenship, and a rewarding life.

Core Values

What are Core Values? Core Values are a set of fundamental beliefs of an organization and/or district and its personnel that serves as a consensus of guiding principles for behavior and action. They are useful in setting priorities in long term planning. Core Values offer a sense of what is right and wrong and often generate a level of outrage when violated. The Strategic Framework Steering Committee deliberated extensively among proposed values for the district. These were identified as being “Core”

The Core Values of the Lunenburg Public Schools 1. Quality education cultivates creative problem solving, independent thinking, and multiple points of view. 2. Effective education addresses the whole child, involve authentic engagement, and provide multiple pathways to success. 3. Students must be provided with an academically and personally safe environment that promotes effective learning. 4. Students should be provided with opportunities to develop initiative and responsibility which will help them become active and supportive community members. 5. Focused, sustained professional development and reflective practice are fundamental to excellence in teaching. 6. Strong collaboration and open communication among school staff, students, families, and the community develop mutual respect and trust, and enhance students’ ability to succeed. 7. Resourcing decisions should be responsible, address critical needs and put students first.

5

Vision What is a district Vision? A Vision is a description of the intended future for a district and its school community if the plan is realized. Rather than a statement of what is currently in place, it expresses a clear, visual, and achievable view of where the district sees itself some years from now. A Vision can be several sentences or paragraphs in length incorporating numerous plan outcomes. It is appropriate to use the present tense in a Vision.

Some topics often addressed in school district Visions are: Curriculum improvement Facilities Literacy Data management Enrichment opportunities

Instructional technology Staff development Assessment Teacher evaluation Social / Emotional curricula

Special populations Parent involvement Community Involvement Instructional practices Project-based learning

Most of these topics align with recent and ongoing change in educational practices, compliance issues, and/or technological advances. The Strategic Framework Steering Committee is in the process of developing a district Vision. Considerations included in the prioritization effort so far include: 

Teachers are systemically provided opportunities for collaborating and articulating learning expectations across disciplines and grade levels.

Instructional technologies are current and appropriately pervasive as tools for teaching and learning, problem solving, creating, collaborating, and communicating.

Schools regularly provide venues for community learning and school/community social events.

Understanding global and technological change is a part of every classroom as students engage regularly in discussions around the impacts.

Students have opportunities to provide input on aspects of school decision-making.

At the secondary level, a diverse set of electives is available to satisfy most students’ interests.

Teacher evaluation processes ensure quality education for all students.

Many other Vision ideas are being compiled. A prioritized list of visionary elements, when completed will be presented to the Core Strategic Planning Team and will be used for goal setting. A finalized Vision will be developed and included as part of the District Strategic Plan. 6

Next Steps 

Establish a Core District Strategic Planning Committee

Review prioritized Vision elements submitted by the Strategic Framework Steering Committee. Finalize Vision.

Develop Plan Components  Goals linked to Vision and Core Values  Objectives  Action Steps  Persons Responsible  Resources Needed  Outcomes

Completed plan available to community in May

Members of the Lunenburg Public Schools community are invited to inquire about any aspects of the processes or outcomes described above; and, may offer suggestions in regard to the emerging Strategic Framework. All comments and suggestions will be communicated to the Strategic Framework Steering Committee for consideration. Please submit any input to Bob Milley, Lead NEEC Project Consultant, at:
