Structural Engineer The Structural Engineer is responsible for interpreting, organizing, and executing engineering assignments. This involves exploration of discipline requirements, definition of scope, selection of problems for investigations, and development of concepts and approaches. In addition, this role is responsible for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to their field. This position primarily works with project staff within a specific Business Sector but can work on projects outside of their Business Sector. Supervision received is essentially administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. This role has a responsibility to mentor less experienced engineering and design staff and share knowledge. Also, this role guides design and may be a discipline lead on a project. Main Duties and Responsibilities       

Research, plan, and design structural solutions for a wide range of industrial facilities, often with rigorous client requirements that exceed typical code minimums. Interpret client objectives, project scope, budget and schedule as defined by project leadership. Conduct detail calculations of loads, pressures, stresses and strains of structural components. Guide the investigations of structural problems. Develop solutions, often requiring novel concepts and approaches within a multi-discipline team. Coordinate with engineers, designers, architects and project staff to reach agreement about designs that fit with operational, construction and aesthetic requirements. Advise on and design measures to improve structural integrity and seismic strength of existing facilities. Communicate the design of a structure and structural components through drawings, specifications, and computer models to develop detail drawings and construction documents.

Essential Job Functions            

Define, organize, execute, and coordinate discipline-specific engineering assignments. Plan, organize, and oversee the work of engineers, designers and administrative staff supporting those assignments. Serve as technical resource on complex design issues and advanced engineering theories, concepts, principles, and processes. Review and approve complex engineering calculations and information that supports the design basis. Select and define scope of discipline-based and related problems to guide investigations. Plan and develop solutions to those problems that often require novel concepts and approaches. Interface with key client and project staff in formal, informal and project team meetings. Research, design and specify equipment, controls and processes. Provide clients with assistance during installation, commissioning and start-up of equipment and related systems. Coordination of design with vendor supplied equipment. Preparation of construction bid packages and construction specifications. Oversight of development of equipment layouts and general arrangements. Oversight of layout of systems.

Assist in preparation and presentation of proposals, including scope of services and fee estimate. Support sectors with business development activities and proposal input. Regular and reliable attendance. Ability and willingness to travel to an off-site location and/or accept client site assignments when required. Coaching and Mentoring of junior staff. Manage the work of engineers and designers on project tasks. Coordinate the design process with the project schedule to ensure timely delivery of the design documents. Seal engineering documents in accordance with the State statutory requirements for the project site.

Knowledge & Skills        

Leadership skills with the ability to work directly with existing and prospective clients, vendors, and constructors. Advanced engineering knowledge. Ability to apply engineering techniques commonly used in industrial capital projects. Ability to identify, interpret and apply relevant codes and standards to engineering designs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use a computer and computer software programs related to the discipline, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Documented supervisory skills needed to manage others’ work. Understand set budgets and deadlines for discipline tasks.

Educational & Work Experience     

7-10 years of relevant experience Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) required Registration as a Structural Engineer is preferred. Will be required within two years of employment. Experience with use of the AISC, ACI, IBC, and other model codes (past and present), ASCE 7 and AISC Seismic provisions. Structural design and analysis software experience using STAAD, Enercalc, FEA and similar. AutoCAD proficiency preferred.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Travel can be required.
