ATTENDANCE Students and parents should check their attendance regularly on Infinite Campus. Infinite Campus can be found on the North High School webpage.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

3. Excessive Absences

Schools are required by State Statute (S. 118.15) to observe the compulsory education law which requires all students to attend school regularly until the end of the school term, quarter, or semester of the school year in which the child becomes 18 years of age. Regular attendance is an important element for success and is the responsibility of parents/guardians and the students.

4. Reporting Absences 5. Unexcused Absences 6. Pre-Planned Absences 7. Illness 8. Attendance & Co-Curriculars 9. Attendance Flow Chart 10. Pre-Arranged Appointments 11. Tardiness 12. Truancy 13. Homework When Absent

Consistent and persistent willful violation of the school attendance policy will result in appropriate disciplinary action and legal referral for Habitual Truancy which is defined as missing part or all of five (5) or more days on which school is held. The law provides dispositions to the court including the immediate or subsequent suspension of a driver’s license upon its receipt by the student, an order for the student to participate in counseling, community service or supervised work program, 2

or an order to remain home at all times except for attending school. (S. 118.163 and 11.06 Municipal Ordinance) EXCUSED ABSENCES According to Wisconsin law, students are expected to attend school except for legal excused absences (Ref. to School Board Policy #5200). Assignments may be made up and it is the responsibility of the student to arrange for work missed due to the following legal reasons for absence: •"

Student illness

•"

Severe illness or death in the student’s immediate family

•"

Religious observances

•"

Suspensions

•"

Approved family educational trips

to 10 times per school year for all or part of the school day before such documentation is required. Students who are absent from school due to medical appointments (doctor, orthodontist, dentist, etc.) should bring written documentation from the care provider to the Attendance Office upon return to school. Medically documented absences are exempt from counting toward the 10 parent excused absences.   REPORTING ABSENCES The parent or legal guardian must call the Attendance Office at 262-970-3516 between 6:45 am and 9:00 am each day the student is absent to provide the school with notification of the absence and the reason. Voice mail is available for your convenience 24 hours a day. If the parent/guardian does not contact the school regarding the absence, the student is considered unexcused. The absence will be designated as truancy, unless a parent/guardian contacts the school by telephone, written communication, or in person within 24 hours of the absence.

EXCESSIVE ABSENCES Students who are excessively absent within a semester may be required to bring a written statement from a physician for an absence to be considered excused pursuant to state statute 118.18(3)(a). Parents may excuse their student from school up

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES A student who does not attend for other than lawful reasons is considered a truant. This includes oversleeping, shopping, car 3

problems, babysitting, working at home, runaways, late return from lunch or off campus as applicable, or personal business. Violation of the attendance policy may result in school consequences such as detentions or suspension, police citation for truancy, and/or petition to the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services for habitual truancy. Attendance is closely monitored by teachers and the Attendance Office. Appropriate steps will be taken to ensure your prompt and regular attendance.   PRE-PLANNED ABSENCES Any student who knows in advance that he/she will be absent from school for more than one day for an excusable reason must complete the Pre-Planned Absence Form which may be obtained from the Attendance Office. The form should be on file with the office at least two weeks prior to the planned absence. Knowing that an absence will be occurring, it is expected that the student will either complete the schoolwork missed prior to leaving or submit assignments to the appropriate teacher immediately upon returning to school as arranged with each teacher. Students who know of a planned absence but do not use this procedure are considered truant for the purposes of making up assignments. Pre-planned absences do count toward the 10 excusable days of absences parents may utilize per school year. Pre-planned absences for

students with any current grade below a “2” will not be approved, and absences will be considered as truancy. To obtain the Pre-Planned Absences Form, click HERE.

ILLNESS If your child has a rash, sore throat, runny nose, fever, or cough, please keep him/her home as these symptoms may be the first signs of contagious diseases. Please report contagious diseases to the Waukesha County Public Health Division and our attendance office. School district personnel are responsible for reporting communicable disease to the County Health Department. Pupils who are suspected of having a communicable disease, specified by the Department of Health and Social Services or the Waukesha County Public Health Division, may be sent home by any teacher or principal. The parents will be notified as soon as practical of any student who is suspected of having a communicable disease. If your child becomes ill or is injured at school, the school will attempt to notify parent(s) or guardian(s) by telephone. If this fails, the school will call the alternate contact for assistance in transporting the child. In severe cases where the situation requires immediate medical attention, 9-1-1 will be called. 4

ATTENDANCE AND CO-CURRICULARS A student must attend the last 50% of his/her classes the day of an event in order to participate in that event. All absences must conform to the school’s attendance policies. Any student suspended from school may not participate in any rehearsals, practices, or events while under suspension. (Ref. School Board Policy #2431.)   PRE-ARRANGED APPOINTMENTS All student appointments (such as medical, dental, court, driver’s exam) must be cleared, in advance, through the Attendance Office. A student who will miss one or more classes due to an appointment must have written permission from his/her parent. The parent’s note should be brought to the Attendance Office to obtain an off-campus pass on the morning of the appointment. This pass is to be shown to the teacher whose class the student must depart from to make the appointment. The pass should be carried at all times while off campus. Upon returning to school, the student should report to the Attendance Office to receive a Re-Admittance Slip and provide written verification of the appointment from the office of the appointment. All work missed by the student due to an

appointment is his/her responsibility to complete as assigned by the teacher.   TARDINESS Students are expected to be on time for each of their classes. While the Waukesha North staff may excuse tardiness when unique circumstances warrant an excuse, the expectation is that students will be prompt for class and personally responsible for their tardiness. Tardiness beyond 10 minutes is considered an unexcused tardy and repeated tardiness is considered truancy which is subject to truancy consequences including detention, municipal truancy citation, and suspension from school. Excessive tardiness will result in further disciplinary consequence.

TRUANCY Students are expected to attend every class for which they are scheduled unless they have a legal, excused reason for being absent from that class. Schedule changes are effective only when the student has a computerized copy of his/her new schedule.

5

Skipping a class or being excessively tardy is illegal and unexcused, according to state law (S. 118.16). Truancy from class will result in disciplinary action. In addition to the state laws addressing truancy, the local community has a municipal ordinance that calls for a monetary forfeiture after a citation for truancy. The local law enforcement monitors this ordinance along with school officials.

HOMEWORK WHEN ABSENT When a student is absent it is the student’s responsibility to obtain homework assignments by contacting his/her instructors or accessing the course Blackboard site.

Waukesha North Athletic Program

Founded in 1974 Waukesha North competes in the Classic 8 conference. Our Athletic Program is an extension of the classroom and an integral part of the Waukesha North's program of education. Coaches and students are motivated to want to win and excel, but the principles of good sportsmanship prevail at all times to enhance the educational values of contests. Participation in school athletics by a student is not a “Right,” it is a “Privilege” that must be earned in order to be a member of an athletic team.

We strive to provide and maintain a comprehensive athletic program that seeks the greatest development possible of its participants within the framework of the total district educational program. The goal is to provide avenues for intellectual and interpersonal growth, social development, as well as to improve student-athletes physically and emotionally.   To see a full list of athletics offered and start dates, Click HERE.
