WELCOME TO MAPLE GROVE! Maple Grove Education Centre is a Grade 7 and 8 school, which was officially opened in 1979. We would like to emphasize that although our school may be impressive in its physical facilities and equipment, it is the positive involvement of our students, their parents, and our teachers that create an outstanding school. We hope that if you have any concerns or questions during the school year, that you would contact the school. It is through this type of open communication that your son/daughter will benefit. At Maple Grove we are very proud of the Maple Trees that surround our property. These Maple Trees are ceremonial and were planted by various groups and organizations on the anniversary of Maple Grove's 25th birthday. While we encourage students to enjoy the shade we also request that students don't climb or hang off of the limbs of the trees. Thank you!

GENERAL INFORMATION Attendance: 1. Good attendance and punctuality are expected of Maple Grove students. 2. Students arriving late to school are expected to bring a written excuse with them explaining the reason for their lateness. This excuse should be given to the office when the student signs in. 3. If you are absent from school for any reason, you are expected to bring a written excuse on the day you return. This note should include the dates absent, your homeroom, the reason for your absence, and be signed by your parent/guardian. This excuse should be given to the main office. 4. Valid reasons for student absences include illness, death or serious illness in the family and medical treatment. Students who are absent during a test should expect to write the test the day they return. If a student is absent, it would be helpful if parents called the school between 8:15 am 10 a.m. to indicate the reason for the absence. 5. Students who are absent from school are expected to make arrangements with their teachers to catch up on work missed. Request to Leave Early: 1. If a student requests to leave school prior to 3:17 p.m. that student must have a dated written note to that effect and must be picked up by his/her parent/guardian. The note should be given to the office, and kept in school files. 2. Students who leave early during the day due to illness must notify the teacher that period so that the appropriate entry can be made in the attendance. In all cases students must sign out at the office if they leave school prior to 3:17 p.m. 3. Students coming to school by bus are expected to go home by bus. Students going home in private vehicles with friends must have a note from their parent/guardian, and approved by the Principal. Students who normally travel by bus are not permitted to leave the school grounds before school or during recess or noon breaks. Student Services: School Counselor: The counselor may be seen through appointments or by dropping in outside of class time. Parents are also encouraged to contact the counselor directly to discuss student progress as well as problems as they arise. Maple Grove's school counselor is present to assist students in the areas personal, educational, and career counseling as well as being a liaison with community agencies and services. African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker & Mi’kmaq Student Support Worker: A student support worker is available during pre-determined hours at the school to offer students’ academic and social support, as well as advocate student rights. This worker also serves as a liaison between home and school for students on his/her caseload. Cafeteria: 1. Chadwick Food Services Management Inc. operates a cafeteria which is open before school, recess and noon. An attractive selection of lunches is available to students throughout the year. 2. Monthly menus are available to students at the beginning of each month from the cafeteria and via the school website. 3. Students who wish to bring their lunch from home are to eat their lunch in the cafeteria, rather than in their classroom or hallway. Library: The library is a central aspect of Maple Grove. Students have a wide range of material to choose from. This material can help students with projects, provide valuable research, and serve as an excellent source of leisure reading material. Reference books (encyclopedia, etc.) are for use in the library only and are not to be taken from the library. Lockers: 1. Students will be assigned lockers by their homeroom teachers. 2. Students will keep their lockers tidy such that books and other items can be easily found. 3. Students should report any damage to their lockers to their homeroom teachers immediately such that repairs can be made. 4. Under no circumstances are any locks other than school issued locks to be put on school lockers. If used, personal locks will be removed from the locker. 7

Telephone: 1. Students are to use the Office Telephone, not the public telephone, when contacting parents to come and pick them up from school. 2. Public telephones are located in the main lobby for the use of students. Students should be using the telephone only prior to the first morning bell, during recess, lunch time, and after school School Newsletter: We feel that is important to keep parents informed about various aspects of school life so we will send home a newsletter at least once a month. The school newsletter is also available on the school website. Lost and Found: Items found in and around the school are to be brought in to the office where they will be kept in a lost and found cupboard. Students are encouraged to put their names on all items that belong to them. Valuable items should not be brought to school. Medical Information 1. Students who feel sick during the school day such that they cannot function in class are to report to the office. 2. The office will telephone home to ask their parents to pick them up at school. If parents/guardians cannot pick up their son/daughter the student may be able to stay in the office if necessary. 3. Parents/guardians are asked to sign their child out at the main office if they leave during school time. Life Threatening Allergies: All students will complete a Student Allergy survey. If your child has a life threatening allergy the parent is expected to make the school aware of its nature and implications at the time the student registers for school. Necessary forms and authorizations should be completed. Distribution of Oral Medication: If the following information is not clearly provided then staff must refuse to administer medication: copy of physician’s prescription specifying type of medication dosage frequency of administration method of administration possible side effects remedial action for side effects method of storage of medication. Certain drugs require special training to administer. Only trained staff can administer such medication. Scent Free Environment: Maple Grove Education Centre strives to be a scent free school. Everyone's cooperation is needed to make this a reality. Students will be asked to change clothing if scented products are on the clothing or parents will be notified to take the child home to change.

SCHOOL POLICIES Late for class Students are expected to be on time for all classes. In the event that a student is late as determined by the teacher a late slip will be issued and recorded by the administration. An accumulation of four late slips will result in the student being placed on probation. Copying and Plagiarism Students who are caught copying or plagiarizing another’s work will be placed on probation, allowing time to re-do the work. A student who knowingly allows another to copy his/her work may be subject to consequences. Harassment: Harassment can take many forms. It is a type of abuse that can be verbal, physical or written that is unwanted by the receiver. There are many types of harassment: racial, sexual, gender, religious, etc. Maple Grove wants to ensure that students feel safe. Abuse of this nature affects the well-being of everyone and will not be tolerated. Any student who feels he/she has been the victim of bullying is urged to see the administration immediately. If a student feels that they are being bullied, they must report it to the administration in order for something to be done. If the bullying continues after the conference with the bully, the victim MUST inform the administration again so that more severe consequences can be put in place (suspension, meeting with parents, etc.) 8

Sexual Harassment If someone makes or entices others to make sexual advances toward another person, requests sexual favors in exchange for a benefit, makes sexual comments or physically touches someone in a sexual manner, it could be sexual harassment. Sexual harassment can take many forms: displaying pictures or objects of a sexual nature, staring, leering, stalking, gestures, unwelcome invitations or requests of a sexual nature, physical touching, patting or pinching, unwelcome remarks, jokes, innuendoes or sexually laden comments about appearance or behavior. Racial Harassment Any unwelcome comment or incited action based on race, color or national, ethnic or aboriginal origin is racial harassment. Some forms of racial harassment include: racist slurs or derogatory remarks based on color or origin, sabotage, racist pictures, graffiti, or other material racist jokes, innuendoes, teasing or threats. Dress Code: The following dress code was implemented in Sept 2003 by the Tri-County School Board with descriptors added by MGEC 2012: 1. Students are expected to wear clothes appropriate for the time, place and occasion (an elementary/junior high 7 and 8 school setting). 2. A student’s dress and appearance shall: a. be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process; b. recognize that extremely brief garments such as tube tops, crop tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines (front and /or back), skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh (approximately three inches above the knee), and see-through garments are NOT appropriate at any time – including school dances; c. ensure that underwear is completely covered with outer clothing; d. not include the wearing of hats in the classroom except for a medical or religious purpose or for special promotions within the school such as “hat day”. 3. Any student who refuses to adhere to the dress code shall be subject to discipline up to and including an in-school suspension for the day. Any student who repeatedly fails to comply with the dress code shall be subject to further discipline. Cell Phones and Electronic Devices: All cell phones are to be turned and left in lockers during instructional time. Students may only use these during non-instructional time (before school, recess, and lunch). *Exception: Some students may be given access to certain electronic devices for documented program plans. Phones/iPods will be taken from the student and turned into the office if students are caught with them in violation of this policy. The MGEC Policy outlines that the first time a phone/iPod is taken from a student, it will remain in the office until 3:17pm the same day. The second time such a device is taken, the student may pick it up at 3:17pm the following day. The third time it is taken from a student, it must be picked up at the school by a parent/guardian. Cameras: Because of privacy issues, students are not permitted to use cameras at school unless permission has been given by the school for school projects or special school events. This includes pictures being taken with cell phones that have camera capabilities. School Internet Agreement: The Internet is a powerful tool, which can enrich learning. It opens a world's wealth of information and communication possibilities. Schools in many countries are using the Internet to provide unique learning experiences. Students placing information on the Internet represent not just themselves, but their school, community and country. There are several considerations which students and parents must be aware of as students gain access to the many facets of the Internet. 1. Appropriate Use: If students do not make appropriate use of the Internet and the tools involved in its use, they will lose the privilege of its use. Below is a list of unacceptable use: a) Accessing or sending of any information which violates Canadian laws. b) Accessing or sending information which is obscene, hateful, sexually explicit, abusive, threatening or contrary to school standards. c) The sending of any information of a commercial nature, or advertisements, or political lobbing. d) The abuse or damage of any hardware, files, or other information. 9

e) Actions which disrupt or interfere with the use of the Internet by others. f) The use of others' accounts, or the access of private or restricted files or information. g) Any attempt to use the Internet as a system administrator. h) Using inappropriate or insulting language. I) Any actions which harass others, including the sending of unwanted mail. j) Showing disrespect for the privacy and rights of others. k) The breaking of any rules, or etiquette set up and explained by the school's Internet manager. 2. Safety : Many types of people use the Internet. Some are criminals. Some are dangerous. Any information encountered on the Internet must be viewed with caution. Students should be aware of the dangers, question any form of information and report anything at all suspicious to the local Internet manager, a) One must be aware that any information sent on the Internet may be viewed by others. Privacy is not assured. b) Do not give any information which reveals your identify or place of residence, or that of your friends. c) Do not agree to telephone, or meet in person, anyone you discover on the Internet. Advise your local Internet manager and parents if someone on line wishes to meet you. d) Do not reveal your age, sex, personal data or feelings to anyone, or any file on the Internet. Do not post a picture of yourself, your family members, your home, etc. e) Do not reveal any credit card, bank account numbers or any other personal data. 3. Ownership: Students should value the privilege of Internet use, value the useful information and services and take responsibility for their actions. a) If anyone suspects others are using their accounts, or the school's Internet system or files without permission, those suspected should be reported to the local Internet manager. b) Students should never reveal their password(s) or file names. c) Students should always site the sources of any information they use or copy. Copyright provisions must always be followed. d) Students should report to the local Internet manager any information which has made them uncomfortable, or threatened them or someone else. e) The school retains the right to check student files and actions on the Internet, and to direct students to make corrective actions. f) The school retains the right to check student files and actions on the Internet, and to direct students to make corrective actions. g) The school and/or teacher assumes no responsibility for any inappropriate, offensive or dangerous information which students may encounter in using the Internet.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION Classroom Procedures: 1. When the bell rings at 8:45am, students are to go to their lockers for their books and then go directly to their homerooms. 2. Students are expected to keep their desk and area around their desk clean. 3. Students should be sure they bring all required materials to each class as they may not be given permission to return to their locker or previous classroom. Changing Classes: 1. Students will be dismissed as a class and are expected to arrive at their next room on time. 2. When going from one class to another, do so in an orderly fashion. Students are to move in a single file with a minimum of talking. Traffic in the hallways should follow the rules of the road; always keep to the right. 3. Students are not to stop at their lockers or pay phone between classes. 4. It is important to leave the classrooms and hallways in a tidy condition. Methods of Assessment: 1. Assessment of pupil progress will be made by means of regular tests and by marking student's notebooks, written assignments, research projects, class presentations, exams and daily class work. 2. The school year has been divided into three terms. At the end of each term a report card will be sent home with each student. Parents are asked to review these reports carefully and are encouraged to attend Parent/Teacher Interviews (see school calendar, on page 1 of this handbook). The school or teachers may be contacted at any time should a concern arise. 10

Textbooks: 1. Textbooks are provided to students at no charge, however once issued, texts become the student's responsibility. 2. All textbooks, notebooks, etc., should have the student's name and class written on them. 3. At the end of the school year students will be required to return the textbooks they were issued. Students will be charged for the replacement cost of lost textbooks and for texts that are unduly damaged. All textbooks must be accounted for prior to the end of the year.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR INFORMATION Student Clubs and Sports: 1.Each school activity is under the supervision of an advisor who guides the student involved so that their involvement is a learning experience. Students learn not only the operation of the activity but also gain valuable experience through working with others. 2. The participation of staff, parents and students in extra-curricular activities is voluntary, but it is this participation that has developed such a positive and enthusiastic school spirit. 3. Athletic teams have done very well in past years and all students who do have an interest in any of the sports teams that have been formed should not hesitate to try out for the team. 4. An extensive number of clubs and organizations have been formed with the number of participants and number of clubs increasing each year. 5. Many of the activities are not funded by the School Board so the school must raise money to help cover the cost of these services. Parents and students will be notified when a fund raising event will take place. In certain cases parents will be expected to contribute directly to the cost of an extra-curricular activity that involves their child. School Dances: Dances are a privilege, not a right. Several school dances will be held this year. To ensure a successful dance students are asked to follow certain guidelines. It should be understood that the chaperones, whether they be teachers or parents, are to be treated courteously. A minimum of 5 Parents and 5 Staff chaperones must attend the dance for the dance to take place. 1. School dress code applies. 2. On occasion guests may be permitted. The guest must attend school and is expected to follow all rules. Guests who have been in any trouble at their school jeopardize their attendance at our dance. The student who invites the guest is responsible for the actions of the guest. 3. Tickets will be sold for the dance the week of the dance. No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are not transferable. 4. Coats are to be hung in the lobby. Students will not be permitted to use lockers as many areas of the school will be closed for use. Washrooms in the gym changing rooms are to be used during dances. 5. No cigarettes, drugs or alcohol will be permitted. Any indication of either will result in immediate dismissal from that dance and subsequent disciplinary action. 6. Students will not be permitted to leave the building before the conclusion of the dance without written permission from parent/ guardian. 7. If students see any damage taking place or any rule being broken, they should report it immediately to a chaperon. It is to everyone's advantage that a few people do not ruin the dances for the majority of the students. 8. Students on probation may not attend dances. Students who are not present the day of a dance will not be permitted to attend. 9. Cell phones and other electronic devices are to be left home and are not permitted at the dance. 10. There is always a concern regarding the traffic problem, which results when picking students up from dances. It is very important for drivers to exercise caution and to travel with the traffic flow. If possible carpooling would help to lessen the congestion.
