Student Leadership Policy This Policy:  Is endorsed by the school staff  Is available on the school’s website www.stjriverwood.catholic.edu.au  Is available to staff in hardcopy Policy Folder and electronically on the staff server.  Was updated October 2014 Rationale Our Student Representative Council has an important part to play in the life of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. Not only are they available to meet special guests, address the school at special events and represent the school at functions, they also provide the Principal with important feedback on student issues and can be an effective vehicle for communicating and modelling ideals to the students and wider community. Our student leaders at St Joseph’s aspire to:  Uphold and promote Catholic values.  Demonstrate pride in the school.  Make a positive contribution to their school.  Be a role model for other students by upholding the school rules.  Show initiative and demonstrate organisational skills.  Communicate effectively and be able to speak to an audience confidently. School Leadership Positions Opportunities exist for students to develop leadership skills in the roles of:  School Captains  School Vice Captains  Sport Captains  Members of the Student Representative Council Broad Guidelines In mid to late Term 4 a process is held to elect the School Captains, Vice Captains and Sport Captains for the following year. Process for Electing School Captains 1. The Year 5 teachers, in consultation with the Assistant Principal, will explain to students in Year 5 the expectations and responsibilities of being a School Captain, Vice Captain or Sport Captain. 2. The students in Year 5 nominate fellow students (or self-nominate) who possess the desired qualities of leadership necessary to fulfil the roll of School Captain, Vice Captain or Sport Captain. 3. Each student may only nominate once. 4. Nominated students are given the opportunity to accept or decline nomination. 5. Staff members and students in Year 5 will participate in a secret ballot to vote for their preferred boy and girl Captains. 6. The Principal and Leadership Team will meet with the Year 5 classroom teachers to discuss the outcome of the voting procedure. 7. The Principal and Leadership Team generally endorse the successful applicant. Under exceptional circumstances the Principal retains the right to choose a more suitable student for the position. 8. The students elected to the position of School Captain and Vice Captain are announced at an Assembly prior to the Year 6 Graduation Mass. 9. Parents of these students are contacted by the Principal before the Assembly and are invited to attend. 10. The outgoing School Captains hand over to the incoming School Captains at the Year 6 Graduation Mass. St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School ~ Student Leadership Policy
