The School District of Marinette offers students a wide variety of educational options to its students. The District’s primary educational pathway and instructional programming for students involves a progression from 4-year old kindergarten through 12th grade, leading to a high school diploma. Personalized learning experiences have been expanding over the past several years, creating successful learning experiences for every student.
Opportunities for Students in Marinette
Marinette High School (Grades 9-12): Transcribed Credit Courses - The School District of Marinette established articulation agreements with St. Norbert College, UW-Marinette, and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. We currently have ten MHS teachers offering 17 courses for high school and college credit. St. Norbert College We currently offer three St. Norbert College dual credit courses totaling twelve credits - English Composition (4 credits), Introduction to Literature (4 credits), and Introduction to Leadership (4 credits). In past years, we have also offered Survey of U.S. History (4 credits). ● 2015-16: 36 students are earning eight English credits and 16 students are earning four Leadership credits. UW-Marinette We currently offer one UW-Marinette dual credit course for four credits- Environmental Geology. Since it has a lab component, it meets the natural science/lab science general education requirement at UW colleges and universities. ● 2015-16: 14 students are currently working earning MHS/UW-Marinette credit. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College We currently offer thirteen NWTC dual credit courses totaling 28 credits - Auto Service Fundamentals (2 credits), Automation 1 - Control Logic (1 credit), Automation 2 - Motor Control (1 credit), Machine Wiring & Safety (1 credit), Introduction to Robotics (1 credit), College Mathematics (3 credits), Communicating Effectively (1 credit), Communicating - Writing (1 credit), English Composition I (3 credits), General Anatomy & Physiology (4 credits), General Physics I (4 credits), Medical Terminology (3 credits), and Child & Adolescent Development (3 credits). We also offer two NWTC advanced standing courses - Economics and Honors Chemistry. ● 2015-16: 185 students are currently working on earning 544 credits in thirteen NWTC courses. Advanced Placement Courses - Marinette High School currently offers two Advanced Placement (AP) courses - AP US History and AP US Government & Politics. AP courses are rigorous, college-level courses. At the completion of each course, students may take the AP exam for an opportunity to earn college credits. ● 2015-16: 81 students are enrolled in two AP courses
Virtual Education Options - The School District of Marinette contracts with Wisconsin Virtual School (WVS) to provide online classes in student interest areas where there are currently no in-house offering or when an alternative format is needed. Students have taken classes in AP European History, AP Psychology, AP World History, Art Appreciation, Career Planning, Computer Fundamentals, Criminology, Digital Photography, Family & Consumer Education, Finance, Fitness, Game Design, Geography, German, Gothic Literature, Health Careers, Japanese, Latin, Life Skills, Marine Science, Music Appreciation, Wellness, and many more. ● 2015-16: 19 students are working on 20 WVS classes. Distance Learning - The School District of Marinette has contracted with ShoreNet since the 2013-14 school year to deliver Interactive Television (ITV) courses to Marinette High School Students. For the NWTC courses, students have the opportunity to earn dual credit. ● 2015-16: 14 students are enrolled in three ITV courses (NWTC American Sign Language I, NWTC Exploring Criminal Justice, and NWTC Introduction to Psychology). Youth Options - Marinette High School juniors and seniors have the opportunity to take college courses through the Youth Options program and earn dual credit. Students must submit an application by the semester deadline and courses must be approved by the School Board. Students have taken courses in art, anthropology, business, computers, engineering, health, math, music, philosophy, physical education, psychology, public speaking, science, and sociology. ● 2015-16: This year, 38 students are working on 203 college credits at NWTC and UWMarinette. Nursing Assistant Program - The School District of Marinette has partnered with NWTC since the fall of 2013 to offer a Nursing Assistant program at Marinette High School. The course is a combination of classroom and clinical learning experiences. After successful completion of the course, students have the opportunity to take the state exam to become a licensed CNA. ● 2015-16 - 29 students are completing the program. GPS Education Partners - The School District of Marinette began partnering with GPS Education Partners in 2013 to offer an alternative pathway to graduation. Students earn their diploma from Marinette High School while spending their junior and senior years fully immersed in education and training at local manufacturing companies. In addition to a high school transcript, students earn a DWD Youth Apprenticeship certificate in Manufacturing Production. ● 2015-16: Eight students currently attending with four set to graduate in 2016 with a MHS diploma and Youth Apprenticeship certificate. Work Experience - Marinette High School students have the opportunity to earn credits through work experience. After taking the Work Experience class and learning valuable skills for employment, students can earn credits by applying their classroom learning through a job. ● 2015-16: 13 students are currently earning credits for their work experience. Extracurricular Opportunities - Students are encouraged to get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. Other - Students have other unique opportunities to learn and connect. ● Mentoring - Juniors and seniors who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement and maturity are eligible for a mentor position. Student mentors are available to tutor and assist students individually, in groups, or in a classroom. Mentors receive credit for their service. ● Career Shadowing - Seniors who are on track to graduate, demonstrate responsibility and maturity, and provide a strong rationale may be eligible for a semester-long career shadow. Over the past two years, students have shadowed a paralegal, an occupational therapist, and teachers at Merryman, Garfield, Marinette Middle, and Marinette High Schools. Students receive credit for their shadowing experience. ● Marine Biology/Ecology Trip - Students interested in immersing themselves in science and cultural learning experience have the opportunity to travel to Belize ● French Trip - Every other year, students in French III and IV have the opportunity to travel to France for two weeks. ● ElectroMechanical Training Lab - NWTC and AT&T teamed up to support the new ElectroMechanical Training Lab at Marinette High School. Students have the opportunity to learn about high tech manufacturing careers through the state-of-the-art mobile lab while earning high school and college credit. Upcoming - The School District of Marinette is currently working on some exciting opportunities for our students:
● Early College Nursing program - Beginning in 2016-17, students will have the opportunity to begin their practical nursing education. Students who begin as juniors will graduate high school with only two remaining semesters of study to earn their Technical Diploma in Practical Nursing. ● Tyco STEM Mentor program - Starting in December, Tyco will be working with Marinette High School to establish a STEM mentor program for sophomores interested in a STEM career. ● 1:1 technology (each student will have their own digital computing device)
Marinette Middle School (Grades 5-8): New for 2016-17: Marinette Middle School plans to “makeover” the technology education lab to facilitate advanced technology learning in a Fab Lab setting. Every 5th and 6th grade student will receive instruction on state-of-the-art equipment and process used to design and fabricate products that are in the marketplace. Area businesses are highly supportive of this career and technical education initiative.
