Both Universities work hard to give students guidance on their responsibilities and behaviour when they are living in our communities. We, too, can play our part. Most people appreciate a friendly introduction to their neighbourhood and for students living independently in a residential setting, perhaps for the first time, this can be helpful. There are many ways to do this… Personal introduction possibly the best approach Welcome letter posted through their letter box Social gathering Some Resident Associations organise a pub meal Why ?

A first relaxed and friendly meeting shows a community spirit. Letting agencies can give the impression that a road is a ‘student’ one. Therefore an introduction shows otherwise, especially if emphasis is given to the variety of residents on the road living 95 lifestyles, families, young professionals, medics, the elderly. It reinforces the idea that it is NOT a student hall but a street of established homes. It is also possible to glean helpful information from this initial doorstep chat. Even knowing one name from the transient household can give more confidence, if it becomes necessary to knock on their door again. Who ? The best way to start things off is to introduce yourself to your new neighbours personally. Although the universities encourage students to knock on neighbours’ doors, few of these inexperienced young people have the confidence to do so. Each year every student is given guidance by UoB /UWE on conduct when ‘living out’. google “ Love where you live Bristol“ When ? Students take on their tenancies from July 1st but most students move into their flats in September or October. So mostly this is a good time to say, Hello Neighbour, Welcome to our road. The best time to visit is early evening Monday to Thursday. But some, who have summer jobs, stay in the city. These are the ones that need to be welcome particularly as the universities will not start “ Door Knocking “ until the autumn term .It could be 3 or 4 months before any one talks to them especially how to manage their waste!

What ? Offer the opportunity to talk about the neighbourhood. Each street has its own characteristics, for example, little space for bin storage, / limited parking/ many families. Property security is always a concern with student households as they are likely targets for opportunist thieves. Advise to be careful about leaving doors and windows open. Share any relevant recent local incidents. With attached properties, make it clear that internal sound travels, if they have heard you then you can hear them ! Suggest an exchange of mobile phone numbers, so if there is an issue you can get in contact by text or phone.

How? Give a positive introduction rather than a lecture. For example if there are six or more sharing it will be more difficult for them to manage the bins successfully than for a family household. This may be the first time they have taken responsibility for waste disposal. They may have come from different places with different systems for recycling and waste collection. This is a good opportunity to give advice on managing bins: -when is collection day / what recycling goes into which container / how important food waste recycling is to reduce their black bin contents (and smell) -encourage them to buy less packaging to reduce their waste, and to wash what they do produce, -to contact BCC for missing bins and boxes.

Problems?

Wondering what to do or who to call?

With thousands of students living in our communities it is only a few that gives rise to problems for their neighbours. Most issues can be resolved by a friendly chat The Universities do all they can to promote the positive aspects of student life and foster good relationships between students and the local community. All students moving into privately rented accommodation for the first time are sent information about living in the community. The Universities treats complaints about student misconduct in the community very seriously and there is a process in place to monitor reported problems. Students may face disciplinary hearing as a result. If you are unable to sort the problem locally, then contact either University of Bristol by email [email protected] or phone 0117 954 6640 or University of the West of England (UWE) by email [email protected] or phone 0117 328 1366

Bins

What can you do to help?

nd

It will be the first time that 2 year students have lived independently and there is a lot to get to grips with let alone the how Bristol deals with waste. Take time and help them understand how the system works

   

If the landlord has not left enough bins then they can be ordered on line www.bristolcitycouncil.co.uk For residentsbins and recycling order new bins, boxes or nets If there are too many or broken bins email customer services and ask for them to be removed.

Stay safe – Burglary advice Student houses attract opportunist thieves and burglars . These young people may be living independently for the first time so be a good neighbour and keep an eye open for windows or doors left open . Suggest to your student neighbours they use plug –in timers on lamps for weekends away / holidays Non Emergency Police Tel No 101 or report online www.avonandsomerset.police.uk ‘Report a crime or incident’ form Noise and Neighbours It is important to report noise issues to Bristol City Council (BCC) as these affect other aspects to do with the area - planning , licensing and policing etc Before you report a noise problem, try to talk to the person responsible. They may not realise they’re causing a problem. BCC Report your noise complaint online at www.bristol.co.uk/ pollution or call 922 2500 option 4

 

Label the wheelie bin and recycle bins. Obtain a net and attach it Give a copy of your collection day calendarremember most landlords fail to leave one in the flat and new ones are not issued until December. If your collection day is a Friday offer to take the students bins in, if they tell you they are going away for the weekend. Do the same at the end of term. Don’t hesitate to ask them to do the same for you but possibly tell another neighbour as well! At moving out time let students know that BCC will remove 15 black bags for £15 ( look at BCC bulky waste collection )

You are not alone Community support that is actively working in the area: BCR Neighbourhood Partnership Bristol Neighbourhood Watch Network Chandos Neighbourhood Association Redland and Cotham Amenity Society (RCAS) The Bishopston Society Your local councillor google Bristol City Councillors

BCC Noise Pollution Out of hours Sun to Tues 7.30pm to midnight Wed & Thurs, 7.30pm to 1am Frid & Sat 7.00pm to 3.30am The service doesn’t operate on Bank Holidays. Call 0117 922 2050 (emergency control) if you would like an officer to visit you about the noise complaint. The service is provided by two officers. They cover the whole city during times of peak demand, this works out to be about 75% of the year. BCC have to prioritise the calls received, so there may be a delay in response
