Enrolment PROCEDURE

FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS* As parent/carers you need to: + contact your local Catholic school and obtain an Enrolment Package + complete the Application for Enrolment form indicating the special needs of your child (eg behavioural, educational, medical). If you believe your child has undiagnosed special needs contact your local GP, Paediatrician and/or Community Health Centre + submit the completed Application Form to the school together with all supporting documentation that details the needs of your child.

Please be aware that the enrolment process for students with special needs may require an extended period of time. This is to ensure that appropriate adjustments are in place to successfully support the individual needs of the student. The school Principal will keep you informed of the progress of your enrolment application. School System Support The Catholic Education Office, Sydney is committed to assisting students with special needs and to providing support for these students. Following appropriate referral processes that identify students’ particular needs, this support may include:

funding special education teachers and teacher assistants in schools an itinerant service of specialist teachers for students with Sensory Impairment transition to post-school options assistance in the modification of school sites and facilities clarification of the process of eligibility for government and system funding for students with a diagnosed disability + assistance in the provision of appropriate equipment, technology, other aids, resources and services.

Professional Development professional development programs for teachers and school personnel + school environments that meet government requirements including compliance with the Disability Standards in Education (2005).

School Community Support Students with special needs enrolled in systemic schools are generally educated within the mainstream classroom, and are supported by a range of resource personnel. Teachers and students benefit greatly from a whole-school community approach to implementing programs for students with special needs. School-based provisions for students with special needs may include: + comprehensive identification and referral processes + opportunities for parental involvement, including case conferencing and reviews of progress + whole-school structures which support an inclusive approach + collaborative interaction between class teachers and the school’s Special Needs Team + professional development opportunities to enhance the skills and understandings of staff and community + development and implementation of Individual Adjustment Plans + adjustments to the curriculum and school environment, and access to technology.

Application for Enrolment at Local Catholic School

Parent Support + advice and support to parents during enrolment and transition within systemic schools or to alternate educational settings + the Sydney Federation of Catholic School Parents, which can also assist with information regarding the enrolment of students with special needs.

Parents indicate on enrolment application form that student has special needs.

Principal conveys outcome of meeting to the parents and CEO personnel.

Parents supply all relevant documentation and/or give written permission for school to access documentation.

Meeting is organised with parents, school, CEO personnel and external agencies (if appropriate) to determine level of need and necessary adjustments.

Principal contacts Regional Special Needs Personnel and/or Sensory Impairment Program Co-ordinator.
