Summer Art Internship Job Description The Summer Art Intern at the Salina Art Center is a temporary contract position, designed to provide support for the Summer Art Program. The Summer Art Intern reports directly to the Director of Education. The position is for approximately 13-14 weeks with a flexible schedule beginning in mid-May, averaging 15-20 hours per week, and increasing to 30-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8:30am – 4pm, from June 12 through August 3rd. The position pays $7.25/hour. The Director of Education will work with the intern to fulfill requirements for college credit. However, if the intern will be receiving credit, it is their responsibility to inform the Director of Education of all credit requirements and provide needed paperwork. About the Salina Art Center The Salina Art Center is a nonprofit contemporary art and education center with the mission to create exchanges among art, artists, and audiences that reveal life. Founded in 1978, the Art Center’s programming is connected to a schedule of contemporary visual art exhibitions of work by regional, national, and international artists in a wide variety of media. The Art Center is an AAM accredited organization. Summer Art 2018 Summer Art Programming is a partnership between Salina Art Center and Salina Parks and Recreation featuring a variety of workshops for ages 4 through adult. Workshops are held Tuesday through Friday, 9am -4pm, with up to four workshops running concurrently. Workshops will start the week on June 12 and end on July 27. The theme for 2018 is Downtown!; workshops will focus on the ideas, excitement, and energy that create a thriving Downtown.
Responsibilities Supplies and Classroom Maintenance ● Organize teachers’ art supply lists. Compile and order needed supplies (begin mid May-flexible hours) ● Maintain art supplies and classroom organization ● Distribute supplies to teachers weekly before workshops and supervise teacher supply use ● Other duties as requested by teachers ● Make sure all supplies are returned to their original location and well organized after classes and classrooms are cleaned and ready for the next group Program Administration ● Assist with enrollment process as Art Center liaison to Salina Parks and Recreation Department ● Prepare Summer Art binders and assist with spreadsheets for attendance and budgeting ● Make sure paperwork, including teacher contracts and surveys, is completed and filed ● Serve as liaison between Education Director and Teaching Artists
On-Site Administration: Tuesday-Friday, 8:30am - 4:00 p.m. ● Act as troubleshooter for teachers if they need additional supplies, extra pair of hands, sending messages, etc. ● Provide exhibition support during non-gallery hours (mornings and all day Tuesday, gallery is not open to parents), and encourage folks to come back during gallery hours to see exhibit ● Oversee ARTery usage during class hours to insure good experiences by participants ● Help keep classroom and surrounding areas picked up; pathways free of debris Student support: Tuesday-Friday, 8:30am - 4:00 p.m. ● Check students in at the beginning of each weekly session; take daily attendance ● Provide student support during classes; if someone is struggling, you are the teacher’s go-to person ● Oversee after-class student pick-up, making sure students are with persons okayed to pick them up ● Call each student parent on Friday before classes begin on the following Tuesday to give reminder about class Volunteer Coordination ● Work with Summer Art volunteers to create schedules with at least one volunteer for each class ● Supervise volunteers when they arrive for their shifts Summer Art Wrap-Up ● Assist with clean-up of Education Wing making sure all supplies and materials are in their original spots and well organized ● Wrap up administrative duties, making sure all necessary paperwork is completed and filed
