SUMMER YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Providing youth with opportunities to leave a positive impact on the community by creating, serving, and implementing change. Summer is a time to celebrate our accomplishments, find new youth council members, and plan for next year. MAY COUNTY PRESENTATION DAY Let us hear your great 4-H Presentation! Jackson County 4-Hers will present to judges at our local County Activity Day. Those participating in the 4-H Entertains Showcase are also invited to participate. Maybe you’re not presenting this year. That’s ok. We need an audience too and you can see if this is something you’d like to do in the future. Please come out and support our 4-H members. BIKE RODEO This activity is designed for kids of all ages to learn bicycle safety and skills! All participants will be entered into a FREE drawing for an age appropriate bike! A total of 4 bikes will be given away! Safety checks begin at 9 AM. All riders must wear a bicycle helmet at all times while riding and have a guardian present. A limited number of bike helmets will be available at the event. MTN YOUTH TALENT CONTEST-STECOAH VALLEY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL Do you like to sing, play an instrument, or dance in the old timey way? Join us for the Mountain Youth Talent Contest. The purpose is to discover, develop, and encourage talent in the youth of Western North Carolina and to provide an opportunity for young people to perform on stage before an audience. Dates: Saturday, May 20 Time: 11:30am - 1:00pm Ages: 5-18 Location: Stecoah Valley Center, Robbinsville, NC Categories: Vocal Performance, Dance, Instrumental (banjo, fiddle, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, etc), Poetry/Storytelling. JUNE SPRING INTO SUMMER Families are invited to join us for an outdoor festival to celebrate the beginning of summer. Lots of food, games, tie-dye t-shirts, music by a DJ, service project, and more! FIRST AID & CPR FOR TEENS Prepare yourself to help others. This is a great skill for life and also for those interested in babysitting. Mike Huffman, a Paramedic from Harris EMS, will teach this all-day course. You will learn basic first aid and how to perform CPR. GEM MINING Let’s venture on over to Franklin and see if we can strike it rich! Spend the morning looking for priceless gems at the Mason Mountain Mine. In the afternoon we will have a picnic lunch, take a walk on the Greenways trail, visit the Gem Museum and Historical Museum and then cool off in the water feature at the playground. Dates: Tuesday, June 20 Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm Ages: ages 5-18, families are welcome to join us. Children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult. FAIRY & GNOME GARDENS Create your own Little People homes, doors and decorations out of clay. Then create a container garden with plants to house your small creations for the Fairies and Gnomes who may visit. Program led by the amazing potter Annie Burrell at Rabbit Creek Pottery. DISTRICT ACTIVITY DAY Join lots of other 4-H members from across Western North Carolina at this regional presentations contest. This year the contest is being held in Macon County. You are required to participate in our county presentations day first and then may be eligible to present at district activity day. You can also attend and watch the youth presentations without doing one yourself. You still need to register so we know to expect you. BEGINNER SEWING WORKSHOP Learn all about the basics of sewing. Participants will learn how to use a sewing machine, construction skills, and will practice during the morning. Each will leave with a sewing handbook they create. WEST DISTRICT HORSE CLINIC Professional instructors, running games, team penning, a picnic, social time, recreation- all for just $80! Now that's a deal! The clinic is open to all youth- not just 4-H boys and girls. The horse clinic is designed for youth to increase their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. Each child brings his/her horse and, throughout the three days, participates in riding classes in selected disciplines. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rider, the clinic offers something for you! JULY CORN & TOMATO SUMMER CLUB 4-H began with corn clubs for boys – to teach them how to get a greater yield of corn from their land. Soon the girls wanted to get involved and thus began the tomato canning clubs to teach food safety. We’ll revisit some skills such as farming, homemaking and food preservation in this activity. Join us to learn where our food comes from, do some work in the fields, do some canning, and cook and eat meal together. 4-H NIGHT - ASHEVILLE TOURISTS Join 4-H members from across Western NC for a baseball game and celebration of 4-H! Wear your 4-H t-shirt and show your support for the Tourists team. Free pizza for the kids plus games and the 4-H clover highlighted on the scoreboard. Bring your whole family for some summertime fun. STARGIRLS CAMP 4-H is partnering with the New Century Scholars program to offer an inspiring three days of “girl stuff.” Do you feel out of place? Are you wondering what high school will be like? Are you feeling stressed out as a teen? Would you like to meet new people? This camp will help you build self-confidence, be adventuresome, try new things, be healthy, and make new friends. Activities include: journaling, yoga, ZLAP (ropes) course, spa day, healthy eating, stress relief exercises, hiking, and outdoor adventures. SURVIVAL SKILLS Could you live in the woods on your own? Learn about fire building, shelters, how to make cordage, and much more. Jeff Gottlieb, naturalist & earth skills instructor, will lead this one day workshop. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn these primitive skills from an amazing teacher. AUGUST STEP BACK IN TIME CAMP The WCU Mountain Heritage Center and Jackson County 4-H invites kids ages 9-11 to join us in a time traveling journey into our cultural past. New 4-day format this year! Camp participants will meet at the WCU Picnic Pavilion in the morning. Afternoon activities will take place at different spots around campus and in the community (field trips!). Activities (weather permitting): Candle making, bee keeping, quilting, old-time farming, copy books, writing with quill pens, using old-time slates. Adventures: Zachary Tolbert House, Visit to a local graveyard, Mountain Farm Museum. BLACK BALSAM KNOB HIKE We’ll explore the Art Loeb Trail and Black Balsam Knob (approximately 3 mile hike) off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Learn about proper clothing and packing for a day hike as well as Leave No Trace principles. This is a moderately strenuous hike. Bring your own lunch, snacks provided. SCOTT HOGSED DAY A full day of learning about outdoor activities centered around hunting, fishing, and conservation. Try your hand at archery, learn from hunting experts, learn about outdoor safety, and have a meal featuring wild game. While youth attend learning experiences adults are welcome to set up a lawn chair and relax in the shade.
