Seabury Board Elects New Officers Gerry Perez Takes Helm In June, the Seabury Board elected Gloria J. Grant and Kay Rodgers as new Members and Gerry Perez took over the helm from outgoing President Mike Breads who will remain on the Board. With 25 years of experience in marketing and sales, Gloria Grant is no stranger to finance. But beyond her sales experience, Gloria is also a woman of strong faith. She has been an ordained minister for ten years, and has used her time and faith to help those around her. As the Executive Director for the Congregations United for Compassion and Empowerment, Gloria has worked to aid those in desperate need of emergency assistance, whether it is for food, shelter, or basic utilities. Gloria will serve on the Advancement Committee of the Seabury Board.

Gloria Grant

With over 30 years experience as a reference librarian and bibliographer with the Library of Congress, Kay Rodgers helped usher the Science and Technology division into the modern era. Dedicated to social and economic justice, as well as her faith. Mrs. Rodgers will serve on the Program Committee of the Board. Gerry Perez has served on the Seabury Board since 2012, as the Board’s Vice President since 2013 and brings to his new position a 20-year history of volunteer experience, most recently with the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. A Program Manager and Systems Engineer, Gerry knows not just how to come up with creative solutions but also how to effectively implement projects. The new vice president is Stuart Gerson.

Kay Rodgers

A big, big thanks goes to Mike Breads, who will continue on the Board as Chair of the Advancement Committee. As President, he oversaw the merger of Home First into Seabury, the refinancing and renovation of Seabury at Springvale Terrace, and the addition of the Connector services and Seabury’s Ward 6 Aging and Disability Resource Center to Seabury’s family of services. He also helped advance the expansion of Seabury’s administrative staff and creation of the advancement team. Mike led the Board on its first service project with Age-In-Place, presented each employee of the quarter with their certificate, and attended as many events and community exhibits as possible to show his commitment. He and his family also served Thanksgiving dinner at the Home First Residences. We are grateful for his leadership through this dynamic period of growth for Seabury.

Gerry Perez

Seabury Resources for Aging is grateful for the commitment of its Board. Welcome new Members!

Retiring Board Members

The Seabury community expresses deep gratitude to retiring Board Members Geneva Hudson and Jay Hatch. Geneva is leaving the Seabury Board but not leaving her commitment to Seabury. She is taking on a new role with the United Church of Christ (UCC) and is dedicated to strengthening UCC’s connection with Seabury. While volunteering with Seabury, Geneva was instrumental in connecting the residents of Springvale Terrace to memorial and church services and has built a lasting friendship with many residents and their families.

Jay will be missed for his full-time commitment to Seabury’s programs and his active participation in the Board’s Program Committee. He was one of the first Board Members to have taken an active interest in Ward 5, including involving his church in Age-In-Place® projects. He was not only an active advocate for older adults, but also for Seabury employees. Seabury will miss his enthusiasm as well as his outstanding bow tie collection!

Pleasant Hill residents learning gardening skills.

Seabury Employees Rock! Pleasant Hill Landscape Gets New Makeover with Help from Master Gardeners Nearly 15 volunteers worked for almost four hours on Saturday, June 6, to spruce up the grounds of Pleasant Hill, one of the Home First Residences, and engage the residents in hands-on horticulture activities. Led by Master Gardener Kaifa Anderson-Hall and horticulture colleague Preston Williams, volunteers and staff members weeded, planted, and pruned creating a positive outdoor environment to be enjoyed by the residents throughout the summer. Miniature “plantscapes” were created by the residents. “Using garden and plant materials has been a key prescription for horticulture therapists, other allied professionals and even medical practitioners in advancing the overall well-being of seniors,” Williams said. “We know senior wellness is fundamental to Seabury’s mission and this is one way we hope to assist with achieving this goal with the residents of Pleasant Hill and hopefully long-term with other Home First resident of Andrus House and House of Togetherness.”

Thank you Seabury staff for your incredible hard work, dedication and commitment to helping improve the lives of older adults and family caregivers in our community! Employees were lauded on June 18 at the annual Employee Appreciation Event, hosted by the Seabury Board.

Friendship Terrace and Springvale Terrace Gardening Clubs

Bringing Neighbors Together What began as some simple requests to Friendship Terrace resident Alice Belling about the idea of gardening around the building has blossomed into a new Garden Club. The group, which started this May, brings together neighbors with a broad range of experiences, from the expert to the novice seeking to learn more about gardening. For some, they just want to become more active in their community. Friendship Terrace Administrator Eileen Antara is ecstatic

and made sure that supplies were purchased and new plants delivered. The Garden Club bug also struck Springvale Terrace early this spring as residents worked together with Activities Coordinator Victor Armstrong to learn planting techniques and care. Paul Hraber, a Springvale Terrace resident and gardening guru, has guided the group on many planting techniques. We all look forward to seeing what blooms in the future!

AROUND SEABURY DC Councilmember Charles Allen visits Ward 6 Nutrition Sites

DC Councilmember Charles Allen pictured with participant at the Asbury Dwelling nutrition site

DC Councilmember Charles Allen visited the five Seabury nutrition sites run by Seabury’s Aging Disability Resource Center in Ward 6 to speak with residents about their community concerns. He spent considerable time listening to residents speak about what they wanted to see in the area and spoke about what he was working on to help resolve the issues that were brought up. Allen made sure that his contact information was available for all residents in case they needed his help getting access to services. We applaud Councilmember Allen’s focus on older adults in Washington DC!

Seabury Celebrates Pride Festival

Pride Festival

Seabury staff and volunteers were out in force June 13th and 14th to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Capital Pride Alliance. Volunteers walked along one of Seabury’s vehicles and celebrated this year’s Pride theme of “flashback” - with a throwback to the 70’s with funky hairdo’s and crazy glasses. Seabury took the opportunity at the Pride Festival to advocate for older adults and recruit volunteers. A great time was had by all!

Ward 5 & 6 Community Days Marked by Food, Music and Dance Residents in Wards 5 and 6 each enjoyed separate days of music, dance, and food in late May, hosted by Seabury’s Ward 5 and Ward 6 Aging Disability Resource Centers (ADRC). A free lunch, transportation, health screenings and information about community resources were made available. A hat show at Ward 5’s community day created a festive atmosphere for all.

Intergenerational Pageantry Syanne Centeno, Miss Maryland World 2015, spent time on April 17th touring Seabury programs and meeting clients and residents. The highlight of the day was a lunch “meet and greet” at Seabury at Friendship Terrace with Miss Maryland World and four of the Miss Senior DC Pageant winners from prior years.
