Position Summary Yunus Social Business is offering a position of volunteer Social Business Trainer, for 5 months, to coach 2-3 social business entrepreneurs through YSB Haiti’s Accelerator Programme. This 3 month accelerator supports the most exciting social businesses in Haiti to develop, scale and access financing and Social Business Trainers play a hands on role in making this happen. Each Social Business Trainer will work directly with 2-3 social entrepreneurs, taking them through a four-week intensive accelerator, followed by four weeks of testing in the field, and then two weeks refining the model before pitching to investors. This position is based in Port au Prince, Haiti from June to October 2015 (though dates are flexible – please state your availability in your application). Applications will close on May 7th, however we will interview on a rolling basis and the position may be filled before then so we encourage applicants to apply early to avoid disappointment. This volunteer position is unpaid but accommodation and flights will be provided. A background in business management, or finance is desired. Fluency in English and French are required, and Haitian Creole is highly desirable. Who we are: A social business is a new kind of organization that combines the strengths of both civil society and the business world. Social businesses have a social or environmental mission – like NGOs – but are financially self-sustainable – like businesses. Social business is a combination of social action with entrepreneurship and market discipline. YSB Haiti has been operating in Haiti for four years. We offer both coaching and support to social business entrepreneurs, and access to financing through our social venture capital fund. We currently have a portfolio of 10 social businesses in Haiti, across agriculture, manufacturing, clean energy and retail.
What you will be doing: Reporting to the Country Director, you will be responsible for coaching 2-3 social businesses through the accelerator programme: • These entrepreneurs will have succeeded in getting through a competitive applications process and will be part of a team of 15 which participate in the social business accelerator • The accelerator has been designed in conjunction with YSB Global’s worldwide experience, and aims to provide intensive training on all elements of running and scaling social business in Haiti For the first four weeks of the accelerator programme, trainers will participate in and help to deliver workshops for the whole group of accelerator participants, as well as delivering one-to-one training sessions with 2-3 social business entrepreneurs on their business model. Trainers will also work with Haitian and international experts and mentors in designing the best package of support for each entrepreneur. Following this, trainers will support their entrepreneurs throughout a four-week testing phase, travelling around the country as required to support entrepreneurs on site, before spending two weeks refining the idea and helping prepare the entrepreneur to pitch to investors. • Finally, trainers will then work with YSB’s Haiti based and global Investment Committee to conduct a final Due Diligence on those enterprises which YSB is considering investing in. • Other duties and responsibilities, as required, to help ensure that the YSB Haiti Accelerator is a success.
Who we are looking for: Candidates should have the following qualities, skills and experience: • Fluent English (required); Fluent French (required) Fluent Kreyol (highly desirable) • At least 2 years experience at least one of the following sectors: o Strategy consulting – experience with SME is valued o Investment Banking, Private Equity, Venture Capital, SME financing o Project Management in the private sector • Evidence of outstanding analytical skills, critical thinking, evidence-based analysis, efficiency and thoroughness, demonstrated by excellent academic qualifications; • Demonstrated leadership, management and organizational skills; experience of managing teams in challenging environments; • A high level of passion, entrepreneurial energy, personal initiative and responsibility; • A demonstrated commitment to serving society’s needs and a high level of personal integrity; • An excellent understanding of “social business” and how this is related to other concepts, e.g. social innovation, social entrepreneurship, inclusive business, impact investing, etc; • Strong cultural understanding and skills to manage differences; • Diplomacy, negotiating skills and team-working skills; • Willingness to travel outside of Port-au-Prince, including to rural areas of Haiti Your availability should be June 2015 – October 2015 inclusive, though these dates are flexible.
