When drawing conclusions the reader must find evidence from the text to determine an answer. When inferencing a reader must find clues from the text and then apply those clues to their general knowledge to determine an answer or meaning.
For this story, we will be answering the following question. This question is an inferencing question because the author never tells us the answer directly, but he gives many clues to help guide us to an answer. Question: How would you describe Swimmy’s character? Evidence:
Swimmy swam in the deep ocean by himself even though he was afraid. Swimmy thought of a good idea to help his friends explore the ocean without being eaten.
Prior knowledge: I know that I am brave when I do something that scares me. I know that I feel smart when I think of a good idea and my friends like it. Inference:
Swimmy is a brave, smart fish.
Choose the worksheet/activity that works for the level of your students or the number of times you have taught inferencing. The picture frame worksheet will guide your students to answering the inference question. The circle map worksheet can be used whole or small group, or independently or as an assessment depending on your needs.
