Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below :

10

Education is in great demand today in India. Since independence it has spread to those classes of society which were backward and uneducated before. These people were accustomed to applying their native intelligence to the profession of their fathers and they had no idea that they could train themselves to follow any other profession. Besides this training, they had little book – learning and those who could read and write a little knew their multiplication tables were regarded as very educated indeed. Today when the number of schools and colleges have increased everyone has an opportunity to qualify for the profession of his choice. An undergraduate studies many subjects besides those which will qualify him for a profession and so has a wider and more general knowledge. There have been many other changes in the educational system. Ways of teaching have changed and training colleges are running courses to teach teachers these new ways which have replaced the old. In the teaching of English for example, students were made to memorize grammatical rules and the meanings of words. Today students are taught by a more direct way and instead of memorizing rules, they are made to practise using the language. Questions :

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it : 10 Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, in 1809. From the time he was a young child, Charles liked collecting plants and catching animals. His father, Robert Darwin was a doctor, and he wanted his son to follow in his footsteps. Charles, however, found the study of medicine boring and surgery stressful. He neglected his university classes, but studied natural history, the study of the development of plants and animals, on his own. Though he did well in school, Darwin spent most of his college years hunting and carrying on his own studies outside of the classroom. After graduation, Darwin was given the chance to use his expertise. Captain Robert Fitz Roy invited Darwin to sail with him on his ship, the H. M.S Beagle and help him map the coast of South America and make a study of the natural history of the area. Darwin joined him on his Voyage and filled his note books with sketches and observations. He collected specimens, samples of plants and animals for scientific study as they went along. The expedition included a trip to group of islands called the Galapagos. Darwin noticed that each of the Galapagos islands had its own varieties of birds and animals. This finding led him to develop his theory of natural selection, which he wrote about in his book, “On the origin of the species. In natural selection, the fittest organisms or life forms survive long enough to reproduce. Though Darwin was not the first one to use it, the phrase “Survival of the fittest” is another way we refer to natural selection. The theory was the beginning of the modern understanding of evolution, the development of species over time. Questions : (1) Where and when was Charles Darwin born ? Who was his father ? (2) How did Darwin spend most of his college years ? (3) Who invited Darwin for an expedition ? What did Darwin do during the voyage ? (4) Name the group of islands visited by Darwin during the trip. What did he notice there ? (5) (i) Darwin wrote a book titled, “_________” (ii) The theory of natural selection is also known as _________.
