Taaneti Mamau declared President of Kiribati after landslide victory Bairiki, Tarawa, 10 March 2016---Taaneti Mamau, the Member of Parliament from the constituency of Onotoa has been declared the President of the Republic of Kiribati after a landslide victory in the nation-wide Presidential elections which took place yesterday. Chief Justice of the High Court, Sir John Baptist Muria declared and confirmed the victory after the vote results were concluded early this morning. “I have the pleasant pleasure of declaring and announcing Taneti Mamau as the successful candidate and as the President-elect of the Republic of Kiribati,” Sir John Baptist Muria said. The announcement by Chief Justice Muria was made in accordance to the requirement of Section 15 of the Constitution of Kiribati - Election of the President Act (CAP 2A). The election results were concluded early this morning officially confirming Taaneti Mamau’s victory in a landslide margin of 7,069 votes defeating his main rival from Boutokaan te Koaua party Rimeta Beniamina. Chief Justice Muria further announced the official results of 19,833 votes for Taaneti Mamau, 12,764 votes for Rimeta Beniamina and 482 votes for Tianeti Ioane, who also contested from Boutokaan te Koaua party. A charted flight left the capital this morning to repatriate President-elect Taaneti Mamau from his home island of Onotoa. “A special ceremony was held this afternoon where outgoing President Anote Tong officially handed-over the Presidential seal to the President-elect Taaneti Mamau.” A statement from the Office of the President said. The Inauguration of the President-elect Taaneti Mamau will be officiated on Friday afternoon, 11 March 2016 at the Kiribati Parliament House in Ambo. President-elect Taaneti Mamau will become the nation’s fifth president replacing Anote Tong who has consecutively served his 3-terms allowed under the constitution. ###
