“Body” Language! A Study of Our Body!

A Balanced Literacy Thematic Mini-Unit LaNesha Tabb www.anotherdayinfirstgrade.blogspot.com Clip art Courtesy of Scrappin‟ Doodles and Scrapping Goodies

Hey!

Thanks for checking out another balanced literacy unit. I teach through Readers and Writers Workshop and love all things Caulkins and Collins. This work supports the work we do in workshop– with a thematic twist! Here‟s what I‟ve got for you this time: 1. Read Aloud suggestions for shared and interactive reading 2.Interactive/Shared Writing Prompts 3. Word Work Ideas 4. Thematic activities 5. A few math things 6. A printable book This unit supported my study of all things that deal with the human body. I threw in nutrition, exercise, dental health (from Cara Caroll‟s awesome Brusha, Brusha, Brusha unit) and the 5 senses. Hopefully you‟ll find some things of use in here! thank you!!! mrs tabb. © Lanesha Tabb Clip Art: Scrappin‟ Doodles and Scrapping Goodies

Interactive Read Alouds with Accountable talk Talk. Think. Comprehend. This thematic unit was excellent to get some nonfiction text features review in. I provided lots of time to think and talk about the facts we were learning.

Super Senses! We read a book about Animal Senses. We learned that they have some senses that are intensified due to their survival needs. Then we thought about which one of our senses we‟d like to have intensified (super ears for example!) A response sheet for this idea is included! © Lanesha Tabb Clip Art: Scrappin‟ Doodles and Scrapping Goodies

Shared Writing

We a short narrative about how we can be healthy as class. I modeled revision this week. I wrote our text (that we negotiated) with intentional errors. We spent an entire unit on the idea that writers revise their work when necessary and I noticed during my writer‟s workshop that a lot of them weren‟t really revising anymore. I modeled different word choices, adding details to better explain, and correcting high frequency words– using the word wall. This gave me a chance to review all of the work we did during that unit, so they would remember that writers revise their work to make it better!

Interactive Writing

For interactive writing, we made a grocery list that included what we‟d buy if we wanted to make healthy snacks. I loved this because it is real-life applicable. I was able to show them why we make lists and I even showed them one of my to-do lists. They are much more invested when I can show them how I use something in real life! I had them focus on vowel combinations because I wanted those skills to be reinforced. Example: * I had a student write a word like “fruit” because I knew they could use some practice with vowel combos.

WEEKLY POETRY

In my room, there is a new poem every week. It is usually connected with my theme and more recently, authored by me (to show my students that we can all be writers). I‟ve found these poems to be useful in variety of ways– and here are a few. Poems are...  A great way to practice reading with rhythm and fluency 

An Easy way to assess one-to-one correspondence

An excellent way to introduce and discuss vocabulary words

Poems lend themselves to accountable talk

They give me a chance to teach students how to read poetry together and take turns listening/providing feed back

Serves as an EXCELLENT time filler if I find an extra five minutes!

I have added these poems to students‟ book baggies and my struggling readers {LOVE} to read them! We read them over and over and even add drama from time to time. © Lanesha Tabb Clip Art: Scrappin‟ Doodles and Scrapping Goodies

Get Movin‟ with MATH!

This math game was perfect when I tried it out on my kids today. We do math in the afternoon and they are SO antsy, so I have to get them moving around. We happen to be studying the human body and how to take care of it, so I created a memory game that involves reading, computation, and movement! Directions: 1. Copy the pages front to back (it may be slightly off but who cares!) It makes a total of two pages. 2. Give one packet per two students. They will cut the cards out and place them on the floor picture up. 3.Turn over one of each picture and see if you have a match. The words AND math problem have to match. 4.When you get a match, put the two words together to see what exercise you‟ll have to do. 5. Look at the number that is the ANSWER and that is how you know the number of times you have to do the exercise. 6. If you made the match, than you get to keep the cards. The winner is the one with the most cards. I modeled how to play and how to do each exercise whole group before I sent them off to do alone. It was a lot of fun, hope your class enjoys it! Mrs. Tabb
