It's to bad that this German text has absolutely no English translations. (I would love to be able to understand the sources listed in the back.)Fortunately, the patterns are written in an easy to figure out short-hand style script. This hard covered (165 pg) book is full of patterns ranging from stationery tats, medallions, scarves, doilies, mats, tatted eggs, and tatting over glass balls. It's beautifully photographed, mostly in black and white with a sprinkling of colored shots. Well worth the $52 cover price. Available through the CRAFT GALLERY P.O. Box 145, Swampscott Mass. 01907 508-744-2334 Catalog $2 WHAT'S NEW IN TATTING GADGETRY I don't know about you ..... but I hated winding/unwinding my shuttles. I'd even opt to clean the cat box to prolong the eventuality of having to confront this task. I finally justified the price of $42 for a handmade winder and promptly purchased the gadget. VOILA! This once dreaded task has been made easy and fast. If winding/unwinding shuttles keeps you from tatting more, a shuttle winder just might be your ticket. WHEEL OF FAITH BOOKMARK SAMPLE ISSUE OF TATtle TALES - 1992 ABBREVIATIONS AND EXPLANATIONS SR=

Split Ring. A split ring is a ring made with two shuttles. The first part of the ring is tatted with shuttle one using the double stitch. The second part of the ring is tatted with shuttle two using the Lark's Head Knot.

LHK= Lark's Head Knot. Unlike the double stitch, this stitch is a slip knot; it does not transfer over. Tatted with the second shuttle, the Lark's Head Knot is used primarily in Split Ring tatting. DR=

Directional Ring. Term used when tatting on the reversed (wrong) side of the lace. Instead of tatting the traditional double stitch, which then would appear in the wrong sequence on the front of the work, you start the ring with the second hitch of the double stitch. Then work the required amount of double stitches stipulated, minus one, ending with the first hitch of the double stitch. Bring the shuttle through the ring to the right side before closing the ring. Learning and using this method will enable you to tat perfect lace.

RW=

Reverse work. In some instances the lace needs to be worked on the reverse side or wrong side of the lace.

RDS=

Reverse Double Stitch. Not unlike the double stitch (the double stitch consist of two hitches: the first and the second when executing the RDS you work the second hitch first and then the first hitch last. This stitch transfers over just as the double stitch does. The RDS is primarily used in chain tatting and eliminates the need to reverse your work to tat a chain.

CTM=

Continuous Thread Method. This method eliminates two threads that would have to be rethread into the lace upon completion. In two shuttle tatting you would fill one shuttle, place that shuttle down, pull enough thread off ball to fill second shuttle. Cut thread from ball and fill second shuttle. You will be tatting from the center of the thread.

Shl:= Shuttle one, Sh2:= Shuttle two, R= Ring, -= Picot, += Join Indicates pattern to be repeated. Helpful hint: Your lace project is finished, all threads have been reworked into the lace. It's time to stiffen the projects with a commercial type product. I start by saturating my lace with spray starch and iron (on the wrong side of the lace) until the piece is dry. I then take a sponge which is wet with water, I pour out about one tablespoon of the commercial stiffener onto the sponge. Mix the stiffener with the water in the sponge and then dab onto your lace project making sure both sides are covered. Place lace on a glass plate, be sure that the surface is flat, set your micro-wave oven for thirty seconds. Turn lace over and repeat for thirty seconds. Remove from glass immediately. Repeat process for super stiff lace. © 1992 BY TERI DUSENBURY TATtle TALES, 806 HARRISON AVENUE, PORT ORCHARD WA 98366-4212

WHEEL OF FAITH BOOKMARK SAMPLE ISSUE OF TATtle TALES - 1992 DIRECTIONAL RING -

HOW TO JOIN PICOTS

(A)

This is the front of a double stitch.

This is the back.

This is a directionally tatted ring that has not been closed. Notice the split hitches at the beginning and the end of each sequence. Instead of tatting the traditional double stitch, which then would appear in the wrong sequence on the front of the work, you start the ring with the second hitch of the double stitch. Then work the required amount of double stitches stipulated, minus one, ending with the first hitch of the double stitch. ]Bring the shuttle through the ring to the right side before closing the ring. When the ring is turned to the front the formula will read R5-5-5-5. The pattern reads RW DR Sh2: R5+5-5-5. You will need to break that formula down • in your mind to read second hitch, 4 ds, first hitch, join, second hitch, 4 ds, • first hitch, picot, second hitch, 4 ds, first hitch, picot, second hitch, 4 ds, • first hitch bring shuttle through the ring to the front, close. B) This is the correct way to join all picots when tatting my patterns. the ring thread through the bottom of the prior picot. Pull a loop up and the shuttle through. Pull loop back through picot, bring shuttle thread through the loop. Tat a regular double stitch. The picot is never counted stitch nor is it considered the first hitch of the double stitch.

Slip slip back as a

C) When connecting directional picots you will want to pull the loop through the top of the prior picot followed by the second hitch of the double stitch.

WHEEL OF FAITH BOOKMARK SAMPLE ISSUE OF TATtle TALES - 1992 SPLIT RING TATTING - LARK'S HEAD KNOT The first half of the split ring is tatted with shuttle one. The second half of the split ring is tatted with shuttle two. The ring is not reversed to tat the second part of the ring. Shuttle Two is place under the ring thread with the shuttle towards (Reverse Riego Method) you, (If you tat Traditionally the shuttle is worked over the ring thread. You will be pulling the shuttle to the left to bring the hitch taut. It is important to keep the three fingers of your left hand rigid to keep the knot from popping over. Look to the left hand corner of the page. This is how the hitch will look if you are doing it correctly. A good test is to pull shuttle one's thread to see if the ring thread still moves. If the thread does not move freely then a mistake has been made. You will now be working the shuttle away from you under the ring. Pull the shuttle down and to the left, sliding the second hitch into place. Test again, by pulling on shuttle one's thread to see if the ring thread still moves. (A Traditional tatter would bring the shuttle under the ring thread, pulling the shuttle down and to the left, sliding the second hitch into place.)

Through practice you will find that it is not difficult to keep your left fingers rigid inside the ring as it was when you were first learning the technique. Learning how to tat your split rings using this method will eliminate having to remove the ring and working the second part of the ring in reverse or having to © 1992 BY TERI DUSENBURY TATtle TALES, 806 HARRISON AVENUE, PORT ORCHARD WA 98366-4212
