Oh Happy Day! At last, “The Sun, The Moon and The Stars” are yours to tat. These motifs were designed using modern tatting techniques. Modern tatting merely means there are precise manipulations of the shuttle used throughout the pattern so that the lace will have a distinct front and back side. In other words, the bars of all the knots appear on the front of the

It is a good idea to read all directions prior to tatting any of the motifs. If you are not familiar with the techniques behind modern tatting, please take a few minutes to review the following “how-to” explanations. Please note that the pattern script is meant to be used in conjunction with the schematics, rather than one or the other. Good light, a quiet span of time and a sprinkling of patience are the basics to the success of tatting these celestial motifs. Happy tatting,

Teri Dusenbury

HOW TO WIND YOUR SHUTTLES USING THE CONTINUOUS THREAD METHOD Wind one shuttle full of thread. Pull approximately 3 yards of thread from ball. Cut thread from the ball. Wind remaining thread onto shuttle two. You will be tatting from the center of the thread. <1>——CTM——<2>

HOW TO TAT MODERN CHAINS CH DK or Double Knot Chain. The hitches of the double knot chain are manipulated with S2’s thread and transfer over to S1’s thread. Use only where stipulated. CH or Lark’s Head Knot Chain. The hitches of the lark’s head knot chain are manipulated with the S2’s thread and are slid into place on S1’s thread. There is no transference of the hitches. The lark’s head knot is the second hitch and then the first hitch worked in that order. The lark’s head knot is manipulated while the lace is facing the front. CH or Reverse Double Knot Chain. The hitches are manipulated with S1’s thread and transfers over to the S2’s thread or ball’s thread. The reverse double knot is the second hitch of the double knot and then the first hitch of the double knot tatted in that order. The reverse double knot is manipulated -4-

HOW TO TAT DIRECTIONAL RINGS DR or Directional Ring. Reverse the work to face the back of the lace. The sequence of the hitches are tatted in a precise formula. Instead of tatting the double knot, which would appear in the wrong sequence on the front of the lace, you start the ring with the second hitch of the double knot, then work the required number of complete double knots stated — minus one. End each sequence with the first hitch of the double knot. Guide the shuttle through the ring to the front of the work before closing the directional ring.

Directional Ring Join. When joining a directional ring, pull the ring thread up through the bottom of the picot till a large enough loop to permit the shuttle is formed. Guide the shuttle through the top of the loop to the back. Pull the ring thread until the loop is taut. This is considered the second hitch which completes the join in a directional ring. -5-

HOW TO TAT MODERN JOINS +(plus) or join. All joins (except for lock knot joins) are considered a knot and are calculated in the knot count. Pull the ring thread down through the top of the picot till a large enough loop to permit the shuttle to pass through is formed. (When joining the lark’s head knot or the reverse double knot chains to a picot, it is the ball or S2’s thread that is pulled down through the top of the picot.) Guide the shuttle through the front of the loop to the back. Pull the ring thread until the loop is taut. This is the first hitch of the knot. Tat the second hitch of the double knot (the first hitch when tatting the lark’s head knot or reverse double knot chains) to complete the knot. , LK or Lock Knot. The lock knot is primarily used to lock the running (internal) thread into place. The lock knot is formed with the shuttle thread. The thread is pulled down through the top of the pciot. The shuttle is slipped through the loop and then the loop is pulled taut. A lock knot does not count as any hitch or knot. The lock knot is used primarily in chain joins. -6-

SR or Split Ring. A split ring is a ring that has been tatted with two separate shuttles. The top/first part of the ring is tatted using S1 to manipulate the double knot. The bottom/second part of the ring is knotted using S2’s thread to manipulate the lark’s head knot.

HOW TO KNOT THE DORA YOUNG KNOT DYK = Dora Young Knot. The shuttle and thread are manipulated in a precise manner that enables a knot to be formed on a fixed running thread or picot. Pull the shuttle’s thread up through the bottom of the fixed thread that will carry the knot. Guide the shuttle through the bottom of this loop to the front making sure the loop does not twist. Pull the thread that comes out from the base of the last lock knot (or DYK) knotted until the hitch is pulled back under the fixed thread. Pull on the bar thread to slide the hitch over to the right (MC) or left (SC). Bring shuttle two through the front of the remaining bar loop to the back, continue to pull the shuttle to the right to bring this hitch taut completing the knot.

FINISHING TOUCHES Place a piece of graph paper inside of a gallon-sized zip-lock bag. Place bag on top of blocking board or thick card board. Pin into place. Iron motif on the wrong side prior to blocking. Don’t use spray starch or sizing if you plan on using a commercial stiffening agent or sugar starch. Sprinkle with water instead. Sugar starch is the “best” agent for rock hard results and the preferred starch if you plan to use your motif as a sun-catcher or as part of a mobile. (If you prefer to use the other agents listed be sure to follow the directions given on their perspective labels.) Place in a heavy sauce pan: ½ cup sugar ½ cup water Bring mixture to a boil, stirring continuously. Remove from heat after three minutes of boiling. Let mixture cool. Thoroughly saturate motif in sugar mixture. Remove. Prior to placing motif on blocking board, blot excess starch off motif with paper towels (or napkins). Pin motif into desired shape (using rustproof pins). Let dry completely before removing. Tie an appropriate length of clear filament to top of motif.
