There were theatres, restaurants, restrooms and elevators all labelled "Whites Only". One day in 1955 as she was on a bus ride after a hard day at work, a white man ordered her to give up her bus seat so he could sit down. Rosa refused and was then arrested for what she had done. When Rosa became an adult, she avoided taking the local bus. She also chose to walk up flights of stairs in buildings instead of taking an elevator marked "Blacks Only". At the age of forty-two, the previous incident happened again when she had to take a bus. A white man ordered her to leave her seat but she refused again.
