Reinforcing Language The following scenarios might be times in which the use of reinforcing language would be effective. What would you say? A student who has been struggling with remembering all of the steps to unpack in the morning unpacks by herself, remembering all but the last step.

Two students get into a disagreement while playing a math game and decide to solve their problem independently. They use the strategies the guidance counselor taught them and cheerfully resume playing their math game.

A student who often speaks impulsively raises his hand and waits to be called upon.

A student who only wrote 2 pages during Writer’s Workshop one month ago is now writing about 4 pages.

Two students voluntarily stayed behind while the teacher led a brain break in order to properly clean a spill they made.

Reminding Language The following scenarios might be times in which the use of reminding language would be effective. What would you say? The class is about to transition from math time to lunch time. You know that this is a tough transition for them, and they are getting noisy.

You are in the middle of transitioning into class from recess and you notice a student throwing his lunchbox and coat onto the closet floor.

A student is off task during independent work time.

During morning meeting, several students start whispering.

You are about to go to an assembly that you know will be really exciting for your students.

Redirecting Language The following scenarios might be times in which the use of redirecting language would be effective. What would you say? Several students are raising their hand to contribute to a whole-group discussion while one student is speaking.

A student starts using a pair of scissors to cut her shoelaces.

A student takes a glue stick away from his friend who is currently using it.

You are waiting to begin a new activity, but many of the students’ folders and papers are out on their desks.

You have given warnings to two students during Writer’s Workshop, but they continue to talk to each other and stay off task.
