What are the Game Changer Awards?
Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) competition for secondary and primary children
We aim to encourage the flow of school students into STEM career paths
The goal of the Awards is to encourage and develop the change makers and innovators of tomorrow
Students will develop STEM skills as well as develop presentation, public speaking and social skillsets.
What are the Game Changer Awards?
Support from curriculum experts was important in the design of the Game Changer Awards judging manual
This led us to the concept of themes and challenges that aligns with the STEM content in the curriculum
Game Changer Awards are enthusiastic about providing recognition of STEM excellence for teachers as well as students
What is STEM?
STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
Numerical Literacy – Numbers, counting and arithmetic skills
Maths – Formulae tell us how to calculate things and create new formulae
Science – Using formulae and the scientific method to create models of natural phenomena including the behaviour of light, matter, electricity etc.
What is STEM?
STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
Engineering – Combine the results of scientific experiment and maths to create solutions or services that are safe, reliable, meet the communities needs and are delivered at the lowest reasonable cost
Technology – Engineers, Mathematicians and Scientists combine maths, science and manufacturing knowledge to create solutions that are efficient and cost effective ways of providing a service or solving a problem
Computational Skills – Commands, Testing and Looping for control and programming of computer systems
What is STEM?
Each of the disciplines in STEM follow a process allowing discoveries be made and solutions to be found.
Specify – What is the problem? How are we going to solve it?
Design - What are some ways we can solve the problem?
Build or Create – Make the solution
Test – Does our device or idea solve the problem? Is it safe?
Improve – What can be done better? Including the process and the final solution
Award Categories
Four Age groups – Yrs 3/4, Yrs 5/6, Yrs 7/8 and Yrs 9/10
Each age group has an Open and Themed Category
Themes for this year are: 3/4
Water Conservation
5/6
Food and Crops
7/8
Waste Disposal and Recycling
9/10
Transportation
11/12
*Coming next year*
Year 3/4 – Water Conservation
How much water is needed for my lawn?
How much rain will I collect from my roof?
What kind of device could help my family save water?
Examples
Year 5/6 – Food and Cropping
How fast do wheat and barley grow compared to each other?
Which foods grow better under different conditions?
Do different types of fertiliser effect how vegetables grow?
Examples
Year 7/8 – Waste Disposal and Recycling
What is the average amount of waste vs recycling produced by Perth households?
How do different types of waste decompose? What are the environmental consequences?
A system or app that would encourage people to recycle?
Year 9/10 – Transportation
What density of people can travel on a road using personal cars, public transportation or self powered devices? What are the green house gas emissions per person for each?
What could a new transportation system look like in the future? What would it need to do differently to today?
Compare different routes for time, fuel efficiency, stress.
Judging Criteria
Entries will be judged based on the following five criteria;
How well the team understands what they are trying to achieve (the problem) and how well they explain the benefits of their solution.
How well they use or apply science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) principles in their solution.
How creative, novel or innovative is their solution.
How well are their ideas and solution presented.
If they had more time and resources, what would they do to improve their entry.
Guidelines
Age groups are divided to ensure equal opportunity to win for younger students .
We suggest the maximum to be spent on the projects is $200 for Primary and $500 for Secondary.
The standards expected for entries will be to the level of the STEM curriculum for each year group as a minimum.
i.e. Years 3/4 – Calculation of area of rectangles.
Entries should be a prototype, design or model
We are also looking for the process, not just the final product.
Prizes
Each age category will have the following prizes;
Best STEM Solution “Theme” Category - $750 value
Best STEM Solution “Open” Category - $750 value
STEM Encouragement Award (Best Idea) - $500 value
Best Presentation in Age Group - $250 value
People’s Choice Award for Age Group - $250 value
