One of India's best and most influential twentieth-century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy, his academic appointments included the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta (1921–1932) and Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at University of Oxford (1936–1952). Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards during his life, including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. After all it was their day to enjoy and have fun. One class even gave a short play for their teachers. I did not get to watch it as I was busy tidying up the classroom after the party. The Teacher’s Day is not a holiday in India. In fact most of the schools, colleges organizes cultural functions, sports events and other competitions on this day. All in all it was a great day. The whole school was immersed in an atmosphere of gaiety. So when the school bell rang for dismissal I felt a little sad that it should end, but end it must.
