Team Second Grade Team 5 Update Spring 2011 Mrs. Latcham, Van Allen Elementary Teacher Librarian Second Grade students come to the library once a week for a 25-minute library class. During this period, a library lesson is presented. Students also visit the library for an additional 1015 minute time for check out. We allow students to check out three (3) library materials at a time. These materials could include books or magazines. We encourage students to come to the library before and after school if they need new books; however it is often hard to fit into their classroom schedules. Therefore, it is helpful if students remember to do the bulk of their check out on library days. Classroom check out times are: Bangsund – Fridays at 2:35 Jacobson – Fridays at 10:15 Madden – Fridays at 9:50 Books from the library can be kept for two weeks, but of course, may be returned sooner. We are so excited to have students checking out library materials. It is very important that students read everyday. To help families out, we do not charge overdue fines. We do ask that families pay for library materials that are lost or severely damaged. Students that have chronically overdue books will be asked to keep their library books at school until the overdue books are returned or paid for. We would much rather have the books back as the price we charge for books doesn’t reflect the actual replacement cost. Please see Mrs. Latcham if you have concerns about missing or damaged books. Team 2 students also have the opportunity to check out Literacy Library books. These books should be at your student’s reading level and will come home everyday in a bag. Please help your student read and return these books daily. Missing or severely damaged Literacy Library books will be charged $5.00. Library lessons will continue to emphasize how the library is organized, parts of books and stories, and finding books that interest the student. I use thematic and author studies to teach these concepts. First grade students are continuing to learn about the library as we study different genres or types of literature. We have read Realistic Fiction, Nonfiction, Fantasy, and Historical Fiction. After we read the first 3 types, we created one realistic picture of ourselves and one fantasy picture using the web site: http://www.buildyourwildself.com/. This is a web site that is great for those rainy days that spring will bring and is something that you can use at home. After we read Historical Fiction, the students worked on creating a setting by illustrating a time and a place using Tux Paint. Next we will be reading Biographies, Poetry, and Folklore to finish out the year. If you ever have questions about misplaced books or any other topics about the library program, feel free to call 688-1188 or email me at
