Technology is an outstanding media tool that has been quickly integrating into young children lives. We can find young children with technological devices everywhere we go, at malls, schools, outside, and at home. Are these really benefiting the young children through education and their development? Of course it does, it provides children opportunities to be open to a new medium in further exploration and learning experiences. Today, technology such as iPads & small portal devices are used to assist individuals who have speech and language difficulties. Gradually, as more research is being done, there are much more to these media devices it can support children in a positive way. If we look at the school environment, we can see that the teachers include the use of computers and iPads in their class schedules – about 2-3 times a week for about 30 mins. These children are engaging in activities that support their mathematical, reading, language, and other areas of the curriculum depending on the app being used. Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important.” - Bill Gates”
Schools and childcare centers focus on the term “Developmental Appropriate Practice (DAP)”. DAP is an approach in teaching where children are taught in a way that will beneficially develop and allow children to learn, which is a framework for promoting the children’s most optimal learning and developmental needs. While referring to technology, educators and teachers focus on appropriate selections of materials that are suitable for the age group. Technology and media use encourages activeness, hands-on, engagement and empowerment of the individuals. As for yourself as a parent or caregiver it is important to immerse your child/children in activities that will be appropriate for their level and how it would benefit them in their development. Another resource is consulting with a teacher or an educator where your child/children reside at for other tips and further understanding of how you can incorporate technology and media devices at home.
