St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray”

NEWSLETTER Term 1 Week 6 2 March 2016

Dear Parents and Caregivers This year from 6 - 12 March 2016 St Joseph’s will join with Catholic schools across NSW and the ACT to celebrate Catholic Schools Week (CSW). The theme for CSW 2016 is ‘I Belong. You Belong. We Belong.’ which aligns with the Church’s mission to support refugees and asylum seekers at this a time in our world where vast numbers of people are fleeing war and poverty.

Catholic Schools Week is also about forging and strengthening relationships between everyone who has a stake in our schools – students, staff, families, priests, parishioners, and members of the wider community – by showcasing our activities and actions. During Catholic Schools Week, we take the opportunity to highlight not only the best of what we do, but also what happens in our schools every day. For that reason, we invite you and your family to join us at St Joseph’s to celebrate with our school and parish community during Catholic Schools Week 2016. Our celebrations for Catholic Schools Week are: Monday 7th March  Liturgy at 8:50 am followed by presentations from the choir, dance group and students   Morning tea provided for parents at 9:40 am   Open classrooms from 10:00 am - 10:50 am   Parents and families invited to stay for a picnic morning tea on the grass playground from 10:50am - 11:20 am

Tours of the school for new families from 10:00 am - 11:00 am

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray” FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Around the Classes - Year 6 Year 6 have been honing their mathematical abilities through an integrated unit of work that has helped them to see some real world applications of Mathematics. Their task was to design a Fun Park, calculate wages and running cost and determine if their Park runs at a profit or loss. The students have enthusiastically taken on this challenge and have extended their skills in many areas beyond mathematics. A sample of their work can be found at the following link (please copy and paste into your web browser).

https://goo.gl/ZpmVUs Save the date - School Photos This year school photos will again be taken over two days Tuesday 9 August and Wednesday 10 August. Please put these dates in your diaries now! It would assist us greatly if these days are avoided if booking any medical appointments or family holidays.

“Work and Pray” FROM THE LITERACY CO-ORDINATOR Literacy HINTS/TIPS for Week 6!   SPELLING: How can I help my child with spelling? 

Help your child with those areas of spelling with which you feel confident



Remember that not all English words can be spelt correctly by “sounding out”, e.g. the words you and said



Have your child write at home



Use a dictionary together



Encourage your child to try words, then praise the parts that are correct, and then suggest what else is needed



Encourage your child to look at new words, say them, write them from memory, then check them

What should I do when my child asks how to spell a word? 

Ask if your child can suggest any parts of the word.



Simply tell your child how the word is spelt.

Should I correct my child’s spelling? 

Encourage your child to check his or her own work and find any mistakes.



If your child has made a mistake with a common word, ask him or her to try to fix without your assistance

What should I do if my child finds spelling difficult? 

Continue to encourage your child to have a go when writing, to check words he or she is not sure of, and ask for help.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray” FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CO-ORDINATOR

As you may be aware Catholics throughout the world have been invited by Pope Francis to share in the Extraordinary Jubilee: the Holy Year of Mercy. In Pope Francis’s prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy he prays about how Jesus’ gaze saved Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money. Today in our whole school prayer assembly Year 2 Penola took the theme of the story of Zacchaeus, which they have been learning about in class, to deepen the school community’s understanding of the Holy Year of Mercy. Through the love and mercy that Jesus showed Zacchaeus, he was able to have a change of heart and change his behaviour towards others. During this Holy Year of Mercy we are called to show God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. The Corporal Works of Mercy are kind acts by which we help our neighbours with their material and physical needs. For example, giving food to the hungry, giving shelter to the homeless, giving clothes to the poor, visiting the imprisoned, visiting the sick and giving thanks for those who have died.

The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion when we help our neighbours with their emotional and spiritual needs. They include: forgiving others, having the courage to tell someone when they have done wrong, telling people about God and his goodness, giving hope and encouragement to others, being patient with people who hurt you, and praying for all people, especially those who have died.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Work and Pray” FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CO-ORDINATOR Cont’d

Perhaps some of these examples of mercy strike a chord within you. Especially during this Jubilee of Mercy we can be asking ourselves how can we show love, compassion and forgiveness to those who are a part of our everyday lives and those who are just passing through. You are warmly invited to join us for our First Friday Mass Celebration this Friday, 4th March at 12 noon.

Peace and best wishes Robyn Green

The Joy of Cookbooks Cookbooks are beautiful objects whether you buy one or are fortunate to receive one as a gift. There’s something about opening a cookbook to that recipe page that you use time and time again and find the pages stuck together or even that bit of icing still on the page. Yes, Google has become a great way to source recipes, but there’s something very special about a new or well-used cookbook; the joy of holding it is tactile, it holds sentiment, and is something that you can cherish for the rest of your life and pass down to your children. If you’re lucky enough to own a cookbook that was your mother’s or grandmother’s then you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. With this in mind we have decided to create a St Joseph's cookbook as part of our fundraising effort this year. To make this fundraiser as profitable as possible we are looking at ways to incorporate sponsorship. We are looking for parents who are happy to scout out the local businesses in their area to see if they would be willing to sponsor our cookbook. They will be able to advertise their business in the book and therefore get out to many families in the local area. We will provide you with the all the details that you need to provide to businesses. We are looking for people to approach businesses in a number of suburbs. Alternatively if you, your partner, parents, friends etc own their own business and would be willing to sponsor our cookbook that would be fantastic. If you can help, please contact Bec Abel on [email protected] for details. Remember many hands make light work - we can't do this alone and this is a great way for you to help contribute to the school.
