Terry Burk & Sam Case 5k November 4, 2017 While it was a bit was a bit chilly prior to the start of the race, by the time Susan Case gave her command to start the 2017 Burk – Case 5k, it was a great day to run. The Terry Burk & Sam Case 5k is an annual Westminster Road Runners (WRRC) event which honors and celebrates the memory of long-time friends and WRRC runners Terry Burk and Sam Case. This year’s Burk & Case 5k had 86 finishers with runners ranging in age from 6 to 74. Like last year, the 5k course included the trails of the former Wakefield Valley Country Club. Final results are provided below. Particular thanks to: Abby Gruber, Race sponsors – Westminster City Recreation and Parks, Run Moore and Tevis Jiffy Mart, and all race helpers: Susan Case, Frank Schaeffer, Gary Honeman, the Burker family (Heather, Burr, Chase, Paige, and Bree), Andi Hoffman, Dick Clower, Leroy Panek, Mark Mann, Chip Junkin, Joe Loveland, for timing, Dr. Steve McCole and the McDaniel College Kinesiology Club, and Coach Doug Renner and members of the McDaniel College track and field and cross country teams. Finally, it should be noted that the race donated $1.00 per entry to the WRRC Running Shoes Scholarship Fund, with Run Moore matching that donation. A few interesting comments and statistics: 32 or 37% of the finishers were under the age of 15. 21 or 24% of the finishers were 50 years of age or older. Sean Burk, grandson of Terry Burk, not only ran and finished the race, but was 11th overall. While there were fewer runner this year (86) than last (149), the high level of enthusiasm of all participants and helpers was noted, and appreciated.
