Mental Skills of the Month cont . . . – third on the team in Innings Pitched. However, in the first game of the Super Regional, your number was called to start the fifth inning. Nebraska had scored five runs off of Traina and your team was behind 5‐4. You ended up pitching eight complete innings, allowing three hits and zero runs in the 6‐5 victory. Congratulations, by the way. I think we all want to know about the preparation that made a performance like that possible. What is your top goal as a softball player, or goals if you have a few clear priorities? Littlejohn: To win. {laughs} My main goal is to have a great experience with all the girls on the team, to build relationships that I will hold throughout my life. The game itself and winning is a really big part. Everyone wants to win. Besides that, it’s to have a great college experience with my teammates and my coaches. Coach Traub: Have you always had these priorities, or did these change once you arrived at college? Littlejohn: That’s always been my goal. In college, you’re on a bigger stage so you have to be mentally tough, mentally stable, but it’s always been my goal to have fun, enjoy what I’m doing, and play for the right reasons. Coach Traub: Regarding your potential as an athlete, do you have a belief that you have a chance to pitch as effectively as anyone in the country? Littlejohn: Yes, I think anybody does. Especially on this stage, it’s anybody’s game. Anybody can have that opportunity. It’s up for grabs. Coach Traub: At what age did you come to the belief that you would deserve to pitch on this stage, and do so effectively. Littlejohn: The summer after my Sophomore year. I played for Coach Ed Naudin’s Texas Glory team. We came in second place at the Premier National Championship. We played the best teams in the country and we came together as a team and ended up beating them. Coach Traub: You grew up in Rusk, TX, which is a bit over two hours from both Dallas and Houston. How did this impact your development as an athlete? Littlejohn: My little town impacted everything I did. We have one red light, but in that town, I’ve found some of my true friends. I love having such a support group with my family and the whole town. They are rooting for me all the time. Even in tournament ball, I would get messages saying, “Hey, we heard you did great. You’re putting Rusk on the map.” They supported me in ways that I know other kids don’t get. Even now, I know I have a complete support group back in Rusk. Coach Traub: You’re pretty tall at six feet. Were you a pretty dominant pitcher when you were 7 or 8 years old? Littlejohn: I honestly didn’t start pitching until I was 11, about to turn 12. Coach Traub: What did you do between the age of 12 and 16 that led you to get better faster, because obviously your skill level passed a lot of pitchers during that time. Littlejohn: I did a lot of work with my Dad. We would set up tees, trying to get my ball to move around the tees. I had pitching coaches like Bob Phelps and Amanda Scarborough who really helped me. Really, I kept a positive outlook on things. You go out there and you have good games and bad games and sometimes bad to worse, but my thing was that I’d look past it and realize that I had bigger things ahead of me. With every bad there also comes good. I played on some older teams, so I was a bit of an underdog. That was great experience and it also kept me humble. It helped me to know what to work on. Coach Traub: You made some decisions about where to play and who to train with that were specifically designed to push you. Is that correct? Littlejohn: Yes. When things started to go well for me, I realized that I needed the exposure to the big colleges that I could get from playing in the [Dallas‐Ft. Worth] Metroplex. It was a sacrifice and I missed out on a lot of things, but right now, it’s definitely worth it. At the time, I knew I would have to go further to get better. Coach Traub: Was there ever a time when you questioned if it was all worth it? Littlejohn: Of course. There are days when you’re playing in the rain or it’s freezing cold. Practices are hard and hot and you’re tired and your friends back at school are going out and doing fun things. I missed so many things to go to practice. You look back and yes, there are a lot of things I missed, but the sacrifice is definitely worth it because of the bond I feel with my teammates and the opportunities I’m getting. Coach Traub: When did you receive the verbal scholarship offer from Alabama? Littlejohn: Right before my Junior year of high school started. Coach Traub: Many athletes have a letdown in their training when that milestone is reached. How did you stay motivated and continue to push so that you could not only have that scholarship, but also be in position to pitch effectively at Alabama right away? Littlejohn: When I got that call, I thought, “Wow, I get to play on the big stage with the big kids” [said with excitement in her voice]. Then I thought, “Wow, I get to play on the big stage with the big kids” [said with fear in her voice]. I had to get ready for it. Even though I had reached a really big milestone, I knew that bigger things were coming and I had to get ready for it. I didn’t know the details of the expectations for me, but I knew they would be high and I would get into some big situations at certain times, so I needed to work even harder than I already had so I could embrace the opportunities that would be given to me. Coach Traub: I believe that an individual’s performance level comes from a combination of their genetic talent, their physical skills, and their mental skills. I also believe, and there is research to support this, that skill development is much more important than genetic talent. Do you agree? Littlejohn: Absolutely. Coach Traub: How much of the game for you is mental? Littlejohn: I would say the majority of the game is mental. In college, when the stadium is rocking and the hitters are older and bigger than you, and the coaches know everything about you before you even step out there, and they’re all trying to beat you, you have to be mentally strong. You have to stay within yourself and trust what you are doing. Coach Traub: How much do your coaches at Alabama talk to you about the mental side of the game. Littlejohn: It’s definitely mentioned every practice and before every game. They talk about having a positive outlook, even if you strike out or have a bad inning. The game now is so fast that you have to be ready for the next pitch. Coach Traub: How did your experiences with me and with Texas Glory help you with this? (Coach Traub is the Mental Skills Coach for Texas Glory.) Littlejohn: I already had an outlook. I already knew how to change a bad situation into a more positive one. Also, I knew how to stay within myself. I had an idea of how to lead a team if called upon, and how to keep everybody calm, not just myself. I learned about having a positive presence.
