Scrivener was tenant of the Grange farm in the various mortgage documents of the Welfitt family. In this document, you can nearly hear some old Lincolnshire dialect or accent, as in the use of 'fower' for four and 'soaven' for seven. The main value in his farming appears to be in his sheep. The signatures of the four executors or witnesses are interesting, three are noted by their marks, one an F, two being crosses, but the writing alongside each is different. If memory serves me correctly, the writing alongside Thomas Micklethwaite's mark is very similar to that used in the Welfitt mortgage with the Micklethwaites, who themselves did tenant a farm in Wold Newton in the 17th century, and who were still farming in the area at Thorganby and other places. This Thomas may be the one in the Micklethwaite pedigrees given as living at East Ravendale. I wonder if William Thomson is the one who is appointed Rector in 1719, possibly following a relative Richard Thomson, incumbent at this time.
